Car Troubles

So I popped a suspension mount the other week doing some spirited driving round some lovely bendy roads simple fix I thought new mount and it should be fine, took it to GRN today to get it sorted to find the top bolt of the coilover was threaded so had to be cut off so not knowing much about coilovers and what can and cant be replaced i'm now in a bit of a predicament of what to do, Benny helped me out to the best of his ability to at least get me back on the road putting standard suspension on but at the moment I'm not happy with the way it handles, Benny has suggested putting it back to standard replacing it all as the lower mounts were drilled in order to fit the coilovers and the camber is now all over the place with the car pulling to either side when boost is applied making it un-drivable. So any advice please, is it possible to replace the dampener in the coilover or is it a whole unit as in order to get them off the car the rod that comes from the dampener through the top mount had to be cut and below the bolt is threaded so no way to put them back on as they are. Feeling bit annoyed now but as my old man says its the joys of motoring so just taking it on the chin and asking you guys for advice.

Coilover is a complete unit mate, although technically any car with Macpherson strut front suspension has coilovers. You could go for uprated shocks and lowering springs, or get another set of coilovers, but you don't really want to go back to standard on the front if you have coilovers (which aren't technically coilovers) on the rear, it'll handle like a pig.

This is what you get for trying to keep up with a Green T-5R ;)

Oh sh*t! :eye-poppi I believe Gaz shocks can rebuild shock absorbers, on other forums, they seem to get Gaz to make them custom stuff, might be worth giving them a ring. http://www.gazshocks.com/

I saw your car earlier and the offending coil over. If it were me and I was looking to stay with coilovers, I'd go for a named brand (like Gaz), otherwise I'd probably go back to the standard setup but with lower, stiffer springs. How did it run with the coilovers before? Was it overly harsh?

Its was very firm but i didn't mind it, I liked the handling and could put up with the firmness. should of said you were going to be down I'd of come and said hi. Just looked over the stuff I have and they are AST coilovers. If worst comes to worst I'll have a look at Gaz or BC racing After driving back, the car isn't right so I've just got to make a decision to put it back standard or get some new coilovers.

no not a good car week indeed

Post 696095 by Santa on 2014-03-18 20:36:20

To be fair though, the Passat has a very hard life so I don't mind so much.
To be fair though, the Passat has a very hard life so I don't mind so much.
By the sounds of it, when its working, your s60r has a hard life too.

GAZ are very good. They made the custom suspension for the race car I used to have. They also rebuilt the shocks when I destroyed them!! Good service and not devastatingly expensive.

Post 696140 by JT on 2014-03-18 22:43:49

yep have to agree, Gaz sorted my coilovers out after the Avon incident
yep have to agree, Gaz sorted my coilovers out after the Avon incident
does it matter is they are ast shocks tho and not gaz shocks

Post 696153 by Volvostorm on 2014-03-19 00:18:44

I think Gaz will work on any make of coilover :)

Post 696156 by ExternalError on 2014-03-19 00:48:11

Post 696184 by V70 Graham on 2014-03-19 09:00:34

Sorry to hear your having problems Stew, hopefully a call to Gaz will provide a solution.

Post 696232 by ExternalError on 2014-03-19 12:52:53

well looks like my worries were for naught just phone AST who made my coilovers and they were so laid back it was unbelievable they said it isnt a problem and they can rebuild the coilover but will be 75 quid for a general service of the coilover and 50 quid for the replacement part and it will all be ready to put back on the car late next week. Taking it down to Cheltenham Friday to get it booked in.

Post 696246 by V70 Graham on 2014-03-19 13:32:37

Ok it's gonna cost a few quid, but at least you know they'll sort it, glad for ya mate.

Post 696249 by ExternalError on 2014-03-19 13:44:02

considering i was looking at the cost of a set of coilovers the 150 quid it will cost me is nothing I will be glad to getting it all sorted all be it with a slight kick to my modding budget
Well got the Coil over back today all repaired with a new cylinder took a little longer than stated but fingers crossed with the help of GRN the car will be back on the road this weekend now when's the next meet
Glad your sorted mate, sounds like GRN have gotten both our cars back on the road this week.

Post 700247 by ExternalError on 2014-04-02 21:25:30

They are great easy going friendly and great customer service dropping the coil over in tomorrow morning fingers crossed there are no other issues then I'll be treating the car to a new set of shoes still debating on which ones to go for, its set me back a little on my mod budget but it had to be done.

Post 700681 by ExternalError on 2014-04-04 09:14:48

Well back on the road getting 2 tyres on staurday then booked in for a 4 wheel alignment to get the car set back up correctly. Glad to have the car back again, I've missed her.

Post 700683 by M-R-P on 2014-04-04 09:19:36

What tyres have you gone for Stu?

Post 700690 by ExternalError on 2014-04-04 10:12:27

toss up between vredstein vortis or some hankook v12's. checked with my tyre place and they have both in stock so gonna make a spot decision think I may employ the full bladder technique so i make the best decision. They also have some avons in stock but I rate the hankooks slightly above the avons after having them on my old s60. Just preferance really as I cant say there was much in it.

Post 700692 by V70 Graham on 2014-04-04 10:17:33

Glad you have the car back up and running.....bet you can't wait to go out in her tomorrow.

The zv5 is a superior tyre to the zz3 and since you're on a budget, the zv5 is gonna be a lot cheaper than the vreds or hancooks. I get zv5 for £170 a pair fitted and balanced.

Post 700702 by M-R-P on 2014-04-04 11:08:29

Ah yes, forgot you were on 18"s
Ah yes, forgot you were on 18"s
Yep I love my nebs best wheels for a s60 I reacon. With the set back in my modding budget think it will be june now before a downpipe then its tax and mot time so remap will be september I reacon unless I can do some overtime between now and then.

Post 700713 by ExternalError on 2014-04-04 11:46:14

Yep I could just get it remapped now but i'd rather get the downpipe 1st so I dont have to change the map again once its done
Yep I could just get it remapped now but i'd rather get the downpipe 1st so I dont have to change the map again once its done
You could always do what I did.....remap, fit the d/p then take it off again !

Post 700715 by ExternalError on 2014-04-04 11:52:27

I would like to reiterate the great level of service that GRN provided although I do think Benny is fed up of seeing my car though as its lived at GRN the last 2 weeks while the coilover was being rebuilt. But even with the set back GRN have been patient and helpful even to the point that yesturday I couldnt getover to Smethwick until 7 so they stayed behind late just so I could pick it up. I definatley owe Benny a drink for that. I'm really glad to have the car back and will be taking it out for a little play once it has new tyres and the 4 wheel alignment is done.

Post 700719 by ExternalError on 2014-04-04 11:59:35
You could always do what I did.....remap, fit the d/p then take it off again !
So now youve sorted your fueling issue are you going to bolt the mods back on now you know it was the map all along

Post 700748 by V70 Graham on 2014-04-04 14:15:34
So now youve sorted your fueling issue are you going to bolt the mods back on now you know it was the map all along
To be honest Stewart it was only the do88.se intake I took off, I think it will be staying off at the moment as the car would have to be remapped again for that.

Post 700752 by ExternalError on 2014-04-04 14:33:32

ah shame it looked a nice bit of engine bling.

Post 700759 by graemewelch on 2014-04-04 14:51:50

the map wont need adjusting for a downpipe. get it remaped first it wont do it any harm.
