This months and future southern softies meets

As the last two months southern meets have been very disappointing in the number of peeps attending.
At the begin of each month someone starts a thread on the next meet and everyone starts throwing they handbags.
So who whats a fixed date ? or a bun fight each month to argue over the next meet ?
I would set up a poll for peeps to vote but for the love of god I can`t figure out how to set up a poll.
Post 700357 by V70 Graham on 2014-04-03 11:04:20
Either would work I suppose, say the 3rd Sunday in the month for example, or we could carry on with the 'bunfight' method.....it's worked well so far.
I work some weekends so either way won't mean I can attend more, fwiw we're free this Sunday or the 27th

Rob, click "thread tools" at the top of the page and click the option for a poll. The rest is simples.

Post 700709 by oblark on 2014-04-04 11:36:34
Well the idea of this thread was for the softies to vote on future meets.........
As only two have voted I take it no one wants to bother with these meets.
All you want to is to argue that the southern meet is far.
Post 700710 by M-R-P on 2014-04-04 11:38:51
Mornin Rob.
Is there a "don't care" option to vote for?
:D

I second that.:D
Post 700735 by oblark on 2014-04-04 13:12:33
Is that a "dont care" when the meet is or a "dont care" if the meet doesn't happen ?
Post 700738 by stribo on 2014-04-04 13:15:05
Don't care when the meet is, if we can make it we'll be there, if we can't, we won't.:)
Post 700739 by M-R-P on 2014-04-04 13:15:44
I personally don't care when the meets are, if I can make it, I will.
This is why I stopped organising these meets, I just couldn't be arsed with the ball-ache.
I would like to see the softies meet go back to having 13+ cars attending as it was good fun and filling one side of a car park with volvos is quite a sight.
Post 700749 by V70 Graham on 2014-04-04 14:18:30
As above, we've always been there when I haven't been working.

Thats why I started this thread with a poll some people could say whether they wanted a fixed or floating date.
I`m also pissed off with the ball ache of organising these meets.
So with no one organising these meets it looks like the end of the "southern softies meets"

How do you come to that conclusion? All that needs to happen is someone asks who can make when at the beginning of the month.
How do you come to that conclusion? All that needs to happen is someone asks who can make when at the beginning of the month.
Thats my point........................
Someone put a date forward and all you get "cant do then but I can do then" or "cant we do it the following weekend"
If we had a fixed date the poeple would no when the meet was and all this arguing would stop, remember we are surposed to be adults not kids.
Post 700824 by JUDGENINJA on 2014-04-04 19:37:51
Regardless of which is decided all I suggest is that the original poster actively contacts a Moderator to put the date in the thread title.
As above I will attend the opening of an envelope if l'm free.
If I have to make a decision rather than sitting on a fence, I would choose a fixed weekend

I try to do a Shropshire Mid-Wales do about every six weeks, I'm getting some nudges of late, as I'm a bit behind with the next meet, due to the dreaded work, so the next one will be 27th of April up here, but I still have to check out our new venue, as when I tried to check it out before, they where closed for a private function, but I don't really see why I need to arrange with the landlord, as we are just a bunch of friends driving out to meet somewhere for an O.J. and bite to eat, what makes us any different to the rest of Joe Public going to a pub to socialise and we never have had any trouble or stupidity at any of the Two Henrys do's, but the car park is getting to crowded now so time to move on

It's not a case of arguing, it's findind out the best date for the majority. Also we've had a mini meet here before, and Graham's had a couple at his, everytime you've been invited, and you've made it to 2 out of 3, so what's the problem?

DICTATOR...................
I`ve been called many things over the years but never a dictator....................
This thread is to try and sort out dates for the southern meets as at the begining of each the bun fight starts on who can do what date.
Trying to people to agree on a date each month is like herding cats.
So I thought I would grab the bull by the horns and put up some fixed dates.
Other groups on this forum have set dates for meets so I thought us southerns could do the same................................ it appears I was wrong
(well atleast 6 people want a fixed date)

This is how we used to arrange meets, and had good attendance:

The more you tell people when to attend, the more they're going to do the exact opposite, whyich is why no-one's turning up now.

The ££££in` problem is the dates I put forward you and Graham cant make so you`ve decided to arrange your £££in`own meet. All you two had to do was put forward different dates but no you two got on your high horse and throw your toys out of the pram as per ££££in` usual.
When it all boils down it`s not down to the date ££££in` of the meets it`s down to popularity and the ones on the south coast are not in your little group.

Are you off your head? Graham and I are/were 2 of the most regular attendees of the meet, along with yourself and Martin. We also have a lot further to travel than you, but made the effort, will you make the effort to go to the Crooked Billet meets?
We're not the one's that threw our toys out of our prams, we just arranged a different meet which would suit people further up the country, as for suggesting dates, it wasn't the fact that I had specific dates in mind, it was the fact that everyone was being told when they would attend, rather than going with the date that suited the majority of people for a given month. As for this little group you keep going on about, that's all in your head, if there's a group/clique at all it's the regular attendees of the softies meet, which would be Martin, Graham, you, and I, so that would make you a hypocrite.

No, The Vine wasn't your idea, neither is The Crooked Billet, but is it unreasonable for us to want to meet closer to home?

Can I make a suggestion??
Why not (as per another great Volvo Forum) we have, on the front page of the forum, a 'members map' using Google maps or something like that? That way, everyone can look at the map and it will show pins on it with the location of where ppl live. Then, when it comes to arranging a meet, it will be a damn site easier to arrange because we'll all be able to agree on a more central meet to where ppl live. That makes it fair for everyone and also means that some poor git hasn't got to use £80 worth of fuel just driving one!
We ALL have busy lives and some ppl, like me, work shift. So trying to get to a meet can be nigh on impossible most of the time due to (shift workers) working weekends and driving bloody miles away just for a plate of chips and a nose under ones bonnet!
Start with a map of every ones locations then we can work out the best places to have the meets. That way, more ppl will be likely to attend because they don't have to right off an entire 24hrs just to sit in a car park for three hours.
I would like to attend a meet at some point and regularly but I'm not driving for hours to get to one.

For me Lee, it has never been about the travelling, in fact the drive is half the fun, but when we're travelling a decent distance to a meet, it would be nice if there was some flexibilty to accomodate as many people as possible, and not just the person organising the meet.

I picked roughly the 3rd sunday of the month which as said in a pervious thread I`m sad ££££er who dosen`t do ££££ all at the weekends so ANY weekend would suit me.

I know my opinion probably won't count as I don't drive a Volvo anymore, but when I did attend meets it was a lot more enjoyable when there was a lot of people there, so to me making the venue more central makes a lot of sense. Turning up even if it's local and only 3 or 4 people make it, it's going to be a waste of time and will just die.
I use to love meeting up and when we had a 5 or 6 car convoy having little blasts on the way was fantastic.
Anyone remember when we meet up with Russ at R.T Mechanics?, use to get a nice car park full of Volvos and the drive up and back was a giggle.

Another good get together was our trip to Silverstone for a track day with an ex member Warren and I went in his old t5, he blasted onto the dual carriage way then all of a sudden black smoke appeared in his rear window, didn't think anything of it, so continued driving to Southampton to meet up with Chris. Realized his car was ££££ed, so we all bundled into Chris's car and he took us all down.
Really loved Chris's old S70 as it was perfectly modded but still looked factory on the outside.
The drive is a major part of the enjoyment of going to meets for me.

Us too mate, which is why we travel over over the place if we're free, but not a lot of point travelling to a meet, and no-one else is there. ;)

Perhaps a change of event/venue on a more regular basis would get people more interested in going. The Vine is only up the road from me, so couldn't be more convenient, but does get a bit boring after a while.
From my personal point of view, once a month is too often. My personal view is 3 or 4 'local' gatherings a year is more than enough after you've thrown in all the other 'bigger' events i.e. dyno days, track days, 1/4 miles, car shows, etc

You missed my point mate. I too, do not mind a long drive....just not on a regular basis!
If everyone that was coming to a meet had to drive roughly the same distance as everyone else because the meet was 'central' to the ppl attending, then that makes it fairer for all that attend and more likely that someone won't have to drive a ridiculous mileage, all the time.
Not everyone can attend each month and some more than others. Knowing where ppl live at the click of a map would make the meet location so much easier for all that are to attend in that month because the venue can be arranged nearer the time. You won't get any complaints from landlords either because these events won't be on regular basis at the same location.
Makes total sense to me fella!!

Steve's right it's not just about the mileage, we've done umpteen 'Softies' meets at 130 miles round trip and even attended a meet in Barnsley :saythat:
Even with a monthly meet there are always some who cannot make it, with only 3-4 a year miss one and it could be 6 Months without meeting people.

well I was trying to play on the way home, but when it will only boost to about 1.2 bar, meaning I was having to change gear at 3500 rpm, it was slightly annoying!!!:wallbash:

I could tell you were struggling by the cloud of ££££e that popped out of your exhaust when you changed gear lol. Nearly lost my camera when I slowed for the roundabout too :slap: good job you were having trouble - I'd have been going a fair bit faster by the time I had to stop lol.

I did make it to the Vine, but unfortunately not until 19.00, as I had to pick some wheels up for the Soarer, this may have broken Wayne's record for being late. ;)

Gentlemen I would l'd like to announce that I shall be attending this month's meet. Stop laughing - I'm serious. I'm even going to clean the car - honestly. Its just passed its MOT (how, I've no idea) so I'm going to treat it.
Please be aware that I may also bring with me my front drivers inner arch for replacement as well as my front fogs......also I shall need tonnes of advice about curing a possible leaking cam seal.......
I may also bring the future wife and my son.....maybe.....
Anyway It'd be nice to see everyone!
Is it still 2pm at the vine?

Thanks for the present Lee, I'm sure I'll put it to good use ;)
