Letter of resignation

Oh dear, just handed my notice in to the boss, and got a load of abuse back.
"You've dropped me in the ££££, I should have listened to XXXX, etc..."
I've only handed in my notice 3 times in 16 years so it's not like I make a habit of it. Every time I followed the contract to the letter. The most memorable comments I've had from previous jobs were "You can't leave" and "You've turned out to be a bit of a naughty character" ouch
Has anyone been in this situation? Every time I leave a company I seem to have this reaction.........any advice please for the next one?? :)

Don't care about them, look after your own interests because that's what matters when you need to put a roof over your head and food on your table. The only difficulty sometimes is getting a reference but if you're like me there are some colleagues that would help you out.

When I left ma last job to go into my current one, I told the guys I directly worked with (I'd been working with them for 6 year and we were a good team) but didn't give notice until I was contractually obliged to as I'd had many disagreements with management. I handed my notice to the boss and walked back to the workshop, counting down from 30 as I got back to the guys. Sure enough, when I got to 0, the manager came running over, pulled me to one side and said "is there anything that'll make you change your mind?"
"26k" I replied.
I started my new job the next week lol.

Never had issues, when I've done it. Plus now I have staff who have handed their notice to me.
If you are a valued member of the team leaving for self improvement, then your boss is just being a bit vocal where he probably should be doing it in private. He should be working with you on an action plan to make sure your job is covered.

Thanks for the comments chaps. I'm a bit upset about it tbh. Management already blocked me from moving to another position in different location, with the same company, a couple of months ago when there was not much work
Plus before starting in the current role I was told I would have a chance of moving up a level here - after just under 12 months and our little 'discussion' today I was told I wasn't experienced enough. So I've been sat like a lemon waiting for nothing.
Oh well, try your best for years (5) then you are a ££££££ in the last month. Heigh ho

Sounds like a typical reaction of a gaffer that is happy for you to spend your life grafting and getting nowhere while working for them, but go somewhere else?
How dare you?!
Had it myself mate, don't worry about it. You're obviously better than them!
Funilly enough, one of the lads handed his notice in at my place the other day.
A small building company, supposedly closely knit, but we all hate the gaffer with a passion. A real tyrant.
Anyway, he handed his letter over, the gaffer read it, simply said "OK" and walked off.
Couldn't even give a ££££ enough to speak to him about it, or even ask why he wanted to leave.
Not holding out much hope for when my notice goes in in a few weeks... The gaffer likes the other lad as he was soft as ££££, I cause him all sorts of misery (My old man was a union man, I can't be railroaded!) ha ha :D
Point being, to some bosses, mine included, employees are a disposable commodity.
Fine to treat them like crap all the time and expect them to put up with it, then when you leave.expect the remaining staff to take up the slack. But my gaffer at least will be on his own soon as we're all jumping ship.
Karma, a beautiful thing! ;)
Oh well, good luck in your new job, James :)
Steve

Did I read it right, you're disappointed about not being promoted from your current position within 12months?
he's probably just shooting from the hip and worried about the stability from the turn around of staff.

I used to be happy in my job, then I wasn't, now I am sort of. I'm now in an Environmental position where I have to cover cooling tower management (legionnaires etc.) waste water/effluent treatment including keeping COD readings, MLSS readings below South West water limits to keep costs down. I'd like to think I'm needed, as I've saved them about 60k a month since I've been doing it. But you never know what's around the corner. Might be redundancy, notice or sacked. Depends what I get caught doing, lol.

funny enough I was offered a new job today,so I went and spoke to my "gaffa" and he seemed quite shocked!! he asked why would I consider leaving to which I replied...........money............he said leave it with me ill let you know if I can sort it out by the end of next week, its nice to be appreciated having said that I reckon he'll go mad if his offer isn't enough lol
Post 708223 by cherry1809 on 2014-05-02 21:13:33
Unfortunately that's what it boils down to, money. I'm unskilled in my job (relatively) and get about 24k. I left school early and started labouring with my uncle in demolition (great fun!) so my options are limited. Unless I find something nearer, better paid and more fun I'm staying put... Unless I get sacked for abusing other staff. Lol.

see im of an old skool worker, although im un qualified I have nearly 15 years experience in the building trade with my main trade being carpentry work so firms tend to keep me on,if you see some of these so called qualified people coming through the ranks you'd understand why people like me are in quite high demand!!!

Being a business owner and employing people it's so hard to find decent staff that are passionate about the job and will work to demand. Bosses seem to take it personally that your leaving in a smaller firm and think ££££ iv got to find a replacement to finish the project.

Cheers matey, exactly why I'm pissed off about it in your first few lines there. I haven't got a new job yet but have a Plan :)

I've been doing work for the same company for 5 years, but management asked me to change locations after 4. Same position, different location. Before I started in my current location they promised some experience at a higher level. Actually they've been saying that for at least 2 years now but nothing has come of it.
Promotion would be nice but I'm relatively young for the job so I wasn't expecting much. I do uni courses and personal development stuff in my own time, and getting at least some experience at a higher level was supposed to be part of that.

Thanks, nice to hear the other side of things. I'm sorry though but for a boss to swear at me and to say I'm not experienced enough to be given training, after saying nothing for a year..........just makes me think I made the right choice :)

I cant understand why you would give up a steady job without having another steady job to go to!...And plans don't put food on the table.
Tony.
Post 708312 by JUDGENINJA on 2014-05-03 09:30:50
Qualifications don't mean anything versus experience in my field. A lot of building trade is done on experience and recommendations...
An -ology only gives them a basis to start from. I interviewed someone with a MSc and PhD which I thought brilliant. However when speaking to them you quickly realise that they knew nothing about the real world and were incapable of actually doing anything.
I also left college with my highest qualification being a BTEC in Information Technology, but now my job is in Radiopharmaceutical medicines. Personally I have always chased the oppurtunity and not the money. I never turn any duty or responsibility down and I have never said "it's not in my job description to do that". Anyone who works to that doesn't understand what a job description is and how it should be constantly updated as a business develops and it's needs change over time, isn't going anywhere in my book.
My ethos has resulted in my now having my own factory and earn considerably more than the national average, all on merit..
I turn 40 in 2015 and I am looking for the next oppurtunity and will always keep learning new stuff... I am not slowing down yet..
Anyway I think the Original post was regarding a strong reaction from a boss. I wouldn't take anything he says to heart.

Fair point but define steady job...the nature of the contract/work is not continuous, only when the customer wants something doing, it's not like I'm losing a pension or sick pay or anything
hopefully I have enough time to get something sorted - quite happy to shovel poop to put food on the table btw and have done so...!

Did you challenge you boss on what you need to do to get a higher position?
Does he know that you are ambitious and wanted to rise through the field?
Were you willing to take on more work stay late etc to demonstrate you commitment to the company?
Have you asked for key targets for promotion? Doing what your boss asks for rather than what you think he is asking for are two completely different things.
You have to view it from his eyes....
And of course there has to be a job to go to... Your boss can't just generate a senior position without a good business need.

good for you, Judge. The same in my industry - qualifications mean next to nothing. I do have uni qualifications but as above started work from 16 and did them part time later.
There were other reasons also but the main reason I gave was that I wasn't developing - the job was leading nowhere, and all requests to move on were knocked back. So yesterday I did take it to heart as I don't like to just take the money and vegetate :)

To get this higher position, I needed more experience in what we call 'white trades' - electrical, instrumentation, telecoms, etc. I'll be the first to admit I don't have deep knowledge in this so a couple of years ago I asked for training in this sphere.
I thought I had made it pretty clear to management what I wanted to do - prior to coming here I applied for a higher position, so that prompted a discussion on what experience was required to do this work. We have yearly reviews were it's discussed what are your plans and targets for the coming 12 months. Each review I gave my career plans and private plans for example getting registered with the Engineering Council.
Before I accepted the lower position here, I thought it was agreed that I would get this training although since coming here no training plan/review has been created for me, yet I have worked my bum off to make training plans for the guys and girls who work for me. Their training requests have also come to nothing so far. I'm not slating anyone or any company there by the way, maybe there are things at play that I just don't know about.
I don't know how I compare to the other guys in terms of being a hard worker either, but talking about staying late we sometimes can work up to 70 hours a week...!

Same as myself now retired though....
I have City & Guilds in Carpentry & Joinery etc. ect. since the 1960`s and if you are good at your job you don`t ever need a reference as with practical workers you always had 2weeks trial whether qualified or not.......qualifications only means you have the ability to learn and NOT to use your tools!!
I was never ever asked for my papers when starting a new job and they are still in the same envelope in the draw!
If you are good at your job you can just take your labour anywhere to progress as i did........what it is like in this modern era i have no idea but somehow i do feel sorry for the new kids on the block!
