Got around to fitting the intake pipe to the R today. It's a GWE one and although no-one would argue that his welding is top drawer, his finishing, and attention to detail leaves a lot to be desired though, as the metal pipe still had swarf in it:
Not really what you want to be sending through the engine, the pipe for my C70 has even more in it.
So, to fitting, getting the old one off was a piece of cake, with a couple of extensions and a wobble bit I could get to the jubilee clip holding the pipe to the turbo from the top, then it was just a case of pulling the PCV and vac hoses off it, seperate it from the MAF, and done. Putting the new one on was a bit more fiddly, but I put it on in stages to make access easier, and an hour later it was all back together.
Took it for a quick spin and there's a bit more turbo noise, which is nice, and although I don't know if ultimately any quicker, it certainly sounds more angry. :D All in all very happy.

It's amazing how much sound is deadened in the standard corrugated intake pipe isn't it!

Yeah, I think the metal section helps amplify the sound.

Nice writeup Steve.
The combination of dp and metal intake certainly makes for some satisfying noises.

I would, but I'm not a chav. :P TBH I like the sound of the recirc, the K24 one sounds a lot different to the 16t one, a lot more urgent. :D

The k24 is an internal piston type and has a sharper sound as a result.
with the recirc locked off, a 17psi gearchange gives of one almighty chirp rather than chattering. Very satisfying but the chatter gets irritating after a while, hence I have a switch to turn the bugger off when not being a chav lol.

I didn't, wasn't sure whether use detergent or not, I text MRP, but they went in before he replied, he said dishwasher detergent for future reference.

Dishwasher??... Really?.. Oh dear god,lol... You know you're supposed to clean them inside out (ie.. rinse them from the inside out) otherwise you're just pushing any trapped dirt deeper into the filter. Hope you're gonna re oil them afterwards... :)

After an 1 1/2 hours in the dishwasher (its shortest cycle) I think all the dirt has been pushed through, and out. I've got some pipercross oil, but not sure if it's suitable for K&N filters, as the Pipercross are sponge, and the K&N cotton.

Yeah, I've seen them before, been using K&N filters for donkey's years, the dishwasher method is a lot easier. ;)

The few times I've oiled a filter, I used extra virgin coconut oil and blew it through with a air line.

Too be honest, It's not necessary to oil a cotton filter. I know the manufacturers say you should, but the way I see it is this....
A cotton filter, when clean, filters down to approx 0.05 microns. That's a hell of a lot more than an OE paper filter yet no where near as much as stainless steel race filter.
To put that into perspective....0.05 microns is 0.00005 mm!!! That's so small you can't see it with the naked eye. A particle of dirt that small is not going to damage an engine.
I do not see any need to then spray a load of filter oil all over the filter. All it does is attract dirt that cannot pass through the filter anyway and long term, will knacker your MAF! as well as clog up the filter and ruin it.
I leave mine totally dry and wash it in warm soapy water once a year, rinse then air dry for 24hrs.

Thanks Lee, my thought was to not bother oiling the filter, as you say it just seems to attract dirt.
