As some know I've bought a 1996 855 T5 auto as a replacement for my broken p2 Well it seems Frankie was right and the rawness of the acceleration and the way they driver has converted me. So looking to give this one a bit of a tidy up. Here it stands at the minute after a quick clean courtesy of the local hand wash place Image To do list in no particular order: Get bonnet painted/replacement fitted Paint grille leaving chrome sash Fit my 18s from p2 New disks and pads all round Thorough service And more...

Post 718293 by T5frankie on 2014-06-11 18:33:08

is it mapped? cos they go very well when they are

Post 718299 by M-R-P on 2014-06-11 18:39:54

If that is Rory's old car, it was mapped but he might have had the map off before he sold it.

I believe it is mapped. Goes like stink. Boost gauge goes to about 1mm from end of white.

Post 718335 by T5frankie on 2014-06-11 19:46:30

its either mapped or the actuator is set to TAF

Post 718337 by Jamest5r on 2014-06-11 19:59:49

Got to be mapped, WTF happened to the bonnet??

Post 718339 by jdavis on 2014-06-11 20:17:07

Apparently the lacquered had lifted on the old one and was rusty. This was bought thinking it was the same green but it isn't. Don't know why its rubbed back. I've checked all round underneath etc no signs of any accident damage. Other than where boost gauge goes how would I know of its been mapped? It pulls you into seat like a friends old 338bhp 2wd saff did.
If that is Rory's old car, it was mapped but he might have had the map off before he sold it.
Car was bought from wakefield area if that helps?
right guys, roof rail/trims. how do i sort them? mine are peeling badly thanks
I wrapped mine, was time consuming but gave a reasonable finish as far as temp measures go. Only option is to get new ones, Volvo sell them for 400£ ish I think, second hand there about 20-30£ but good luck finding decent ones, took me a while. Mite be able to use v70 ones but I haven't tried it.

Had thought about having them wrapped so will speak to a guy that does it local to me if its a good enough finish.

Post 721957 by Saaamon on 2014-07-01 21:08:34

I wrapped mine the whole way round but I'm sure someone who does what there doing could just do the top, maybe Carbon look of that's your thing.

Post 721966 by RollingThunder on 2014-07-01 21:33:35

Why not take them off, sand them down and paint or powdercoat them? They'd look like new then... but be £380 cheaper :)

Post 721996 by jdavis on 2014-07-02 04:49:15

Good idea, I've got some satin black paint somewhere, will try that first, got to be worth a shot.

Progress is slow (got shingles) so here's a small update Before Image Image After Image Image Thanks to M-R-P for the tip. Looks good but needs a couple more coats.

Post 734870 by jdavis on 2014-09-12 17:00:00

Well, it seems that it isn't remapped after all. After replacing some of the vacuum lines for Silicone ones it is now only boosting 1/2 way into the white band on the dash. The hoses i took off literally fell off and i can only guess that they were acting as a form of bleed valve to the actuator. At least i know it's not 'overboosting' in relation to fuel map any more. Feels slower though :-( Will be on the lookout for remap soon now

Post 734872 by M-R-P on 2014-09-12 17:22:27

Throw some blues in there and a bleed valve dude :)

The wheels suit the car really well! With the roof rails, mine were looking fairly ordinary too. We simply got the chunkier set from a '98-'00 V70XC (also the same as '00 V70 R and other models) and I got them painted in a matte finish which was the same colour as my wheels (though the wheels are gloss) and, while metallic, it blends in well with the normal grey. I'm still waiting on the trim to suit the chunkier rails, but you get the idea - Image The colour is Ford FPV Dark Argent

Good news. Mot passed first time, no advisories. Happy days.

I purchased a 96 Turquoise 850 T5 recently, claimed '304 BHP Rica Map'.. I'll be honest I'm not sure what 300 hp feels like as my last car was a 195 something BHP 2.5t... and it certainly feels psychotic in comparison, wheelspins far too much to be sensible for my wallet! I wish cars came with a rolling road readout by law if they got sold under claimed HP increases / maps so it can put us plebs mind at rest !

Took a chance and bought a set of the pro sport coilovers. Also got some powerflex bushes for the lower arms. Transformed is and understatement. Image

Post 782490 by kmb on 2015-08-19 22:13:48

Looks good, how's the drive?

Post 782496 by jdavis on 2015-08-19 22:35:13

Spot on to be fair, no knocks, no bangs, no new rattles. It's harder than the previous but not as harsh, I think it was knackered. It had kyb shock absorbers so it's had new ones at some point. I kept the oem spring cup and bearing on the front as I wasn't comfortable with how it fitted without the spring cup. Also the lower arm bushes were pretty much none existent!!! The centre fell put they were that worn! The arms were non genuine, stamped with 11/2011, so I expect they were last changed sometime around then. New discs and pads as well, needed new caliper carrier bolts from volvo as the previous owner had rounded them off (explains why there was new pads but old discs). Also sprung a water leak at the back of the engine, identified it as the small hose connecting the turbo coolant return banjo line to the header tank pipe. £9.78 Inc clips from volvo, special order but arrived next day. All in a happy couple of weeks on the 850

Genuine all round I see! How are the prosport coilovers a few months on now? Bought some Bilsteins and getting round to fitting them some point, fitted with my Kilen 40mm 'sport' springs is low enough..

Post 792311 by jdavis on 2015-11-30 10:40:47

They are pretty good to be fair. No problems with them. It handles like it's on rails and is no firmer than I expected. I always try and use genuine maintenance parts where possible and for the price difference it wasn't worth going for pattern stuff. £48 delivered for 4L coolant and thermostat.
