I grew up watching Rolf Harris, and Jimmy Saville as well, is my childhood all a sham? Are the people I looked up to the wrong role models? It's a confusing time, and I have to ask, why have these 'victims' now come forward? I don't suppose the compensation culture we now have has anything to do with it, or am I just being cynical? Just as an example of the compensation culture, the woman that hit our (parked up) C70 Cabbie is claiming personal injury, even though she was doing about 5 mph when she hit it in a LWB Sprinter. Rachel keeps getting phone calls asking if she wants to claim, although no one was in the car at the time. I don't know what went on in the show business world in the '70s, I was only a kid, and too young to understand anyway, it just seems strange that people that couldn't speak out through out the '70's, '80's, 90's and even the noughties, now all of a sudden decide to. Just saying. ;)

I don't know if I believe half of these accusations tbh, why is everyone coming forward now? Christ is that girl that I nipped her butt in Tesco 13 years ago going to come out of the woodwork now. I don't believe people get compensation for this sort of things.

So you're a child or a teenage girl ( or boy) and some extremely famous assaults you. They then make threats to you which scare the life out of you, tell you as a no one you won't be believed, the famous person will be believed. As that child that is assaulted you think NOONE will believe you because of what you have been told!!!! It's not black and white!! Jimmy savile threatened many of his victims, it's said Rolf used money to silence his activities. So rather than victimising the victims here why not actually look at what these vile men were actually capable of and found guilty of!!!

Post 722002 by p fandango on 2014-07-02 06:18:57

i'm sure theirs alot of people made false reports, but hopefully all the charges that have stuck have been well proven with substantial evidence to back it up some people are actually tarnishing current/modern presenters with the same brush as the one mentioned. I read a story on facebook about Richard Hammond who had kindly agreed to drive a terminally ill child around in a Lamborghini, one comment said they were stupid to let a BBC presenter alone with their kid. Very sad

They still thought no one would believe them. People have even coming forward for years and were dismissed, so of course more and more people will come forward now a few have been believed! I don't necessarily agree with the compo side of things but only because I can't see what compensation you could receive for the loss of your childhood? Nothing will ever make that right!

The problem I have with it all is, ….if… A. Rolf was guilty, then IMO the (at the time) government controlled BBC played some part in allowing this to happen. B. Rolf was not quilty, then our courts have allowed the entire life & reputation of a guy has been ruined based on the testimony of a small number of people, and I am guessing here, without evidence e.g. DNA. Sorry to be graphic but there it is. Which is it, only Rolf & friends will ever know. Either way, it doesn’t sit well with me to know the abuses of power that go on.

I have my doubts about some of it. I find it hard to believe that virtually every entertainer from the 60s, 70s and 80s was out molesting children every night. It's also strange that out of all the alleged victims (which must number in their hundreds by now?), only the tiniest proportion came forward before the Saville scandal. This does suggest at least a chance that some of them might not be true. As someone said above though, no smoke without fire, so with the amount of accusations, chances are, some of it is true. I actually think it sets a very concerning tone though. Saville was probably guilty, but I find it a bit concerning that he is regularly referred to in the media as DEFINITELY guilty, despite none of it ever being proven in the courts. A lot of it probably happened, but it concerns me that the media has acted as judge, jury and executioner. It's resulted in no end of people ending up being arrested and going to court. Several have been found innocent but have had their reputations tarnished forever, meaning their families and friends all suffer too. It worries me that the media are having a big effect on this, and it does have a little whiff of a witch hunt. I think it's also very difficult to prove things like this when they happened 40 years ago, and I think we need to be careful judging things based on modern morals. Britain in the 1970s was a very different place. Child abuse was still child abuse, but a pinch on the backside, or even a grope, was viewed very differently. I'm not saying that it was right, but we need to remember that attitudes were very different at that time. If there is strong evidence that XXX person abused someone, then it should be investigated and they should be prosecuted, but if someone accuses XXX person of pinching their bum in 1976, then that doesn't give the red tops the right to put a massive picture of them on their front page with the word "Paedo" above it.

I'm just waiting for the Thundercats investigation... Someone has something to answer regarding cross breeding...!! No way do I support Saville, he was a weirdo and I hated the jim'll fix it program, but I did laugh at one news report where a women complained that jimmy's hand lingered a bit too long on her knee.... They showed the video and that was it, he just touched her knee...Sorry that's not abuse..

I find it a shame that someone can be convicted with no physical evidence. Not saying it's the same for every case by any means. The likes of Saville, yeah was weird (saw him jogging a few times past Lympstone Commando, and always had time to say hello) Rolf Harris, Stuart Hall, who's next? David Bellamy? Keith Chegwin? All people I grew up watching. Can't imagine the lids been kept on this long without even a sniff of an accusation from anyone. I'd like to think it's all bull, but you never know.

I've been arrested 3 times for various reasons and in court refused to be given my sons passport for a holiday, purely based on the say so of my ex...including a charge of threats to kill - zero evidence but I was arrested as I stepped off the plane in Newcastle, straight in the cells & had to prove my innocence, not the other way around

Sorry folks but there are a lot of people back then that could complain about inappropriate behaviour but didn't. I know someone when young that an older person tried it on with but the person got more than they bargained for!!!It was the way it was then . if in doubt ask the older members of your family and see what they say. I don't agree with what happened then but you just need to look at history .The female sex (Male included) were often no more than slaves to do as there partner demanded and some still are imo. I also don't believe in all the suing culture there is now because a lot of time it is due to the persons own mistakes . But that is another topic. I'm just glad things are changing

Post 722037 by M-R-P on 2014-07-02 11:41:13

According to what I heard on the radio yesterday (Jeremy Vine iirc) it's nearly impossible to convict from just one or two complaints, there needs to be multiple complaints and those complaints need to show a pattern i.e. Harris using the same tactics, the same sequence of events if you like. This is how Saville has been dragged through the ££££. It's not just a load of people kicking off and jumping on the bandwagon. The CPS won't make a move unless they're sure of a conviction, especially when a celebrity's reputation is at stake. Wrong or right they have to have set lines which must be crossed before pursuing a conviction. And things were indeed different 30 years ago. Morals were more different than we may realise. When I was a small child, the family never thought twice about smoking around me or my cousins, stacking 4 or 5 of us in the back of the car (or Van for that matter) without seatbelts and doing 80 down the motorway. I'm not saying Saville or Harris are innocent or what they did was the norm back then but it wasn't looked at nor dealt with in the same way as it is now.
