Saaamon's 850 T5.. The story so far.

Thought i'd combine a couple of threads in to one "project" thread. Bought two years ago after regretting selling my 850R 3 years previous. I haven't take many pictures but have a few. Image Image Image Done a lot of service work on it when i first bought it, PCV, plugs vac lines, header tank, HT leads(in post) and loads of other bits etc. As time went on i binned the roof bars, fitted an R bumper, spoiler, titans, KW's V70 lights and LHD headlights. Whilst busy driving lorries i forgot about the car, always kept it well serviced but having at most 45hours a week at home it took a backbench. Image Image Then came the floods. ImageImageImageImage Pulled the water out to make it useable and so we could go to the vpcuk rolling road day, the next day! Image ImageImageImageImage

Post 726348 by Saaamon on 2014-07-27 22:16:49

The flooding gave me the spur to start tidying the car up, the paint has never been great but the N/S is particularly so started off with fitting two doors, V70 tailgate and a rear bumper also sent the wheels off to be refurbished. ImageImageImageImage Image Image Image ImageImage Haven't finished with the paint, will have the bonnet and roof done at some point but have a couple of trips lined up so won't be for a while. Been getting in to detailing again, been over the panels that haven't been painted with clay, G220 with G3 cutting compound followed by AG resin polish and meg wax for protection. ImageImageImageImageImage To be continued...
The car has come a long way, a credit to you.
Thank you! It was looking really tired at the rolling road day, I'm really pleased with how it's turned out, to be honest if it wasn't for AndyR's words of encouragement it probably would of been scrapped!
ooh man ..the titans against the burgundy is class !!
Thank you! It was either these or Volans but I think I made the right choice, I'm trying to keep the look period with a t5r with it being a 1994. Thanks for all the positive comments, will try and update as and when I do more to it, next mods are 302s including new cailpers etc, remap with a check and set up so it runs exactly how it should then just sort out other bits like relay for the LED brake light need some trims for tailgate.. The list is endless!

Looks great. A few years ago, I had an almost identical looking 850T5. Same colour, R bumper and Titans! See - http://www.dvs.net.au/misc/ash850.jpg Here, with water damage like that, an insurance company would have written the car off.

If I'd have claimed they'd of almost certainly wrote it off as well, its a dashboard out job to change the carpet unless you cut it, the breakers I used were great though and waited till I was there to take the front sections out so I managed to cut it high up so you can't tell.

we had a 9 month old v40 in our dealer once that the customer reported some electrical items. it smelt weird inside and when we looked on the warranty system it said warranty void due to flood damage insurance claim. the customer genuinely didn't know - he had bought it as 'late reg' but we showed him the tide mark inside about 6 inches about the door step behind the plastics. we reckoned it came from a dealer who had a storage compound next to the river severn we heard about - they bought 60 cars to pre reg to try and sell to meet target. they lucked out because a week after they put them there, the river flooded and all were written off! so some unscruplious company obviously bought the car as insurance salvage from an auction, cleaned it very well inside and sold it as having a valid Volvo warranty!

302's now fitted, brand new callipers, discs and pads and full fluid flush. New OE HT leads fitted seeing a slight and expected improvement in MPG. Carpet cleaned the interior mats that were kindly given to me by Merc85. Just been through an MOT with no problems, although a couple of days later i discovered a leaking rear shock. With the car going to Germany and Swiss next week the it will be used with some new standard shocks i have spare and will then get on the phone to KW to arrange repair of both rears. Don't have any pictures of the new brakes fitted but we all know what they look like. ImageImageImageImageImage

Post 732938 by AshDVS on 2014-09-02 02:42:24

That's a very interesting shock failure. I'm sure KW will come to the party with replacements though. As frustrating as it is, these things happen from time to time.

Post 732960 by t5 pete on 2014-09-02 08:01:46

Obviously you do quite some milage in this motor what are the kw like for day to day

Post 732963 by Saaamon on 2014-09-02 08:26:39

Yeah I thought it was unusual as well, always check the outside but started notice it was a bit soft on the rear so went to tighten them up and found the problem. I think it's pretty comfy but I do have them set on full soft (1/4 turn), even like that its still handles well. I don't use the car everyday, it's Gemma's car as such she does a few miles a week in it driving to the other side of town.

Post 739998 by Saaamon on 2014-10-05 20:20:33

Not an exciting update but something to stop the thread falling into the vast abyss of the internet. Image Fit some new HT leads genuine set of 5 and a king lead. Image Volvo strut brace, had to cut the part of that black bracket off which went across the strut holding the large plug which can now be seen near the coil. Not sure if its the right way but works for me. Will tidy up the cut edge further and re-paint in due course. Image Found these hiding in my van so was able to rivet the arch linings and bumpers together properly. Image New BCS (V70 one) made up a little mounting bracket, these clip on so cut a slot out etc, turned out to be very secure but added a cable tie for "belts and braces". Image I've kindly been lent some koni adjustable shocks whilst both of mine are being repaired.

Picked up a T5R interior (front and rear seats, armrest and door pads) alittle while ago, its not in mint condition but its perfect for my needs. I wasn't able to check the operation of them at the time but was fortunate to be able to rob some wiring and conduit. Got home, powered them up and all working apart from the passenger backrest and passenger heated seat. Image Image This is why the backrest doesn't work, not enough cable showing. Image Cable fixed and putting seat back together. Image Image Heres the problem. Image Image Seat nearly back together. Image Wiring nearly done now (both sides), inline spliced, soldered and then heat shrinked.

Post 751802 by Saaamon on 2014-12-15 20:06:09

OBD2 clocks wired up to abs sensor and milage and clear surround swapped on to new clocks. ImageImageImage Haven't got round to taking pictures of everything finally fitted but will do at the weekend.

Quality work :) both my 850 driver seats have stopped working just the same, luckily they are where I want them but is that fix doable without taking the seats out?

Post 751809 by Saaamon on 2014-12-15 21:00:52

It could be done if you had no choice but personally i would always remove the seat as its something you'll want to take your time with and be comfortable. With yours being the drivers seat that makes it more difficult as you can't flip it forward to remove the hog rings at the bottom of the backrest.

Post 751824 by AndysR on 2014-12-15 23:13:06

Evaporator will most likely have started evaporating by now and if your contemplating recommissioning the a/c then I would advise you do it, in for a penny in for a pound eh? Might also be worth contemplating the replacement of the condensor whilst you're there..

Image Still couldn't get the heated seat going after repairing the pad so left it and came back and noticed its had the recall done (after reasearching) and still has the old loom and stat still in place which is what i hooked the pads up to not knowing what the recall consisted of. Image Since fitting a V70 tailgate everytime the brake pedal is pressed the bulb failure light comes on, so finally got round to swapping the lamp control module for a V70 one. Image Had to get another under bonnet insulation panel. Image After some tidying up. Image Heavy duty lower arms. Image Revs starting to hang and didn't idle as it should so had a clean up which fixed it.

Post 753331 by AndysR on 2014-12-27 10:46:17

Good to see that you've finally fitted the bulb control module from the V70, I can't believe you left it so long. Will be odd not having the dash remind you that you've braked.. Lol Sound deadening looks spot on, for some reason I thought you'd removed the original one. Good to hear a nice clean up as cured your revs hanging. You should get some poly bushes for those lower arms before you fit them, you won't regret it :) Your definitely really into the car and a petrolhead if you've been out tinkering with the car this close to Christmas

Post 753347 by Saaamon on 2014-12-27 11:32:23

It started to become the norm having the failure light come on and if the truth be told I didn't actually know how to fix it, all I knew is theres a box in the boot that needs changing. I did indeed bin the original, I kept it for a while and even when I binned I knew I'd end up refitting lol. Other than an oil change which I'm doing tomorrow, an air con pump, regas and tyres I have to stop spending on the car now as we need to save for our trip to Gib in May/June.

Post 754063 by Saaamon on 2014-12-31 18:22:10

Image Ordered from frf, including VAT £445, don't really need the plates but the seals for the heater core pipes are worth changing. If you need a condenser there about £260. If like me you don't have a pollen filter you'll need to source a pollen filter housing as thats a lot of the reason they rot out, i expect they can be had from a classic. Image This is the tool you'll need to remove the quick disconnect fittings on the air con pipes. Not sure when I'm going fit it, its weather depending really, they say budget a couple of days, but i'll post pictures and a little write up.

Post 754167 by AndysR on 2015-01-01 18:07:38

Nice update, you'll be pleased you've done the a/c come the summer, I know I was :) I'd also advise getting a pollen filter housing and filter if they're not fitted, was only an option at the time of the 850's original sale, as it will help to prevent the evaporator from rotting out again so quickly then it should last the remaining life of the car :)

Post 781023 by Saaamon on 2015-08-09 16:40:23

Having already made a thread going through the process of fixing the air con i won't do it again but just share some pictures instead. ImageImageImageImage We've been using the car a lot this year, not only is it used everyday, its also had a couple of trips to Europe with the last one being quite an arduous one, 100mph+ for hours on end and temperatures at times 37c. Because of this i thought it could do with a service and some preventative maintenance. Along with the recommissioning of the AC, i fitted a new thermostat, heater core and a full coolant flush with Volvo coolant. Next on the list was the recommissioning of the headlight wipers, the motor was broken on the O/S and is bit of pig to replace but is do-able. That just left replacing the wiper blades and fixing the washer jets by unblocking them and fixing and T junction. Image Image After 3 years of having the tailgate landing on my head whilst getting the shopping out.. Now it nearly takes the end of my chin off every time I open it. Image Next on the list was to service the front shocks, one was slightly damp up on the adjuster screw and they were starting to feel soft. This is the report, “They found one unit had a poor rebound graph when arrived, when the unit was opened they found some dirt inside and some damage to the internal rebound spacers, probably occurred from going into pot holes. The second unit was much better. The rebound spacers have been replaced in both units, both unit graphs look very good now.” Image Image Upon their return all that was needed were new spring seats and spacer washers Image Image

The PCV has been renewed. I changed it 3 years ago when i got the car, but lately i haven't been satisfied with the condition of it so decided to replace it to be sure everything is ok and free from blockages. Whilst in the area, I replaced the vac tree seal, TB hose, TB gasket, distributor cap and rotor arm. Then changed an oil and filter which it was due anyway using 10w40 Magnetic. Image Image Image Image Whilst this was going on I had the wheels refurbished, fitted a brand new grill and gave the rear brakes a spruce up. Haven't taken close up pictures of the wheels yet as i’m planning on giving the car a thorough clean over the bank holiday weekend. Image The front end is pretty filthy here but this is with the new grill fitted. Replaced the indicators couple of months ago for new and replaced the headlight lenses for new LHD type ones couple years ago. Image Image Image Not pictured here, but the all 20 wheel bolts have now been replaced with new genuine.
Certainly spent some time on it, shame about the kw's what the cost for a service on them
Service for a V2 is £120 per unit, that doesn't include any work to the valve. There was a miscommunication which resulted in them just carrying out a service, they have acknowledge this though and are bending over backwards to put it right.

Holy thread revival!! I'm now the proud owner of M853! Bought if off you in March this year. Still going strong! Had the gearbox fitted, with an R clutch, new driveshaft, new downpipe, new PAS pump (although that doesn't seem to have cured the sometimes juddery steering when manouvering - although it happens very rarely!), four new tyres and will have discs, pads and a front wheel bearing soon. Also sourced some original 850 boot badges and refitted a towbar for a thule rack. Rear dampers need servicing again as they've stopped returning so has some stock V70 ones on currently and ABS issue still needs tracing (codes suggest it's the unit). I'm local to Shemtek so it's been there for the majority of the big jobs! As dailys go, aside from the MPG and a few more stone chips to the bonnet, it's epic!

Hello and welcome, I wondered where Saaamon had gone, do you know what he bought after the 850?

Hello and welcome, it's nice to see the cars history continue...but you may wish to start your own continuation thread though. I don't know the age of the kw's that were fitted, but they strike me as troublesome for such an expensive part, I'd expect greater longevity on a part that is meant to be the best you can get, I'm thinking I'll be having bc's for mine
