Converting OBD1 too OBD2

Is it possible to convert a OBD1 car to run a OBD2 ECU ? Is it just a case of removing the OBD1 flashing light box and fitting a OBD2 socket ? Or is it a little more complex than that ? Thanks

Ahh, you have the same problem as me! :D I'm going to be fitting mine next weekend You need an OBD2 port (Got mine out of a vectra, need to move a few wires) 3 wires - Live, earth and signal http://m44.wikia.com/wiki/Special:NewFiles?file=Ecuconnectorschamtic.jpg Pin 4 - Earth Pin 16 - Live Pin 7 - To pin B36 on the ECU

So is that all is needed to get a obd2 socket working in a obd1 car?

As far as I can tell, yes. I've yet to do it though, its a project for next year :)

Thank you Paul I will post how it goes

Is 4.3 different to 4.4 as there are more than 3 wires going to the socket

Post 748663 by oblark on 2014-11-20 08:57:48

You only need 3 leads on the obd2 socket, live, earth and the k-line to use a m4.4.

Dont want it for 4.4 tho after spaked to bomb the other wires are for abs etc so I assume I could connect them to the wires leading to the obd1 port I the engine bay and get them to work I may try it but only need the obd2 port for data

Hopefully in a couple of days I will get chance to try this I've got a socket from another Volvo and also got the ecu connectors so I can rob a pin. I don't know if there's different colour wires on each model but pin b36 looks to be a purple and white wire but looking at the back of the obd2 socket there isn't a purple and white wire to pin 7 so weather it changes colour down the line for some reason I don't know. Hopefully it works and then I will be able to put a definite response on it working and what to do.

Was this a success?
Was this a success?
If it's just for reading the codes, you don't even need the obd port, just wire in a switch and push button.
Was this a success?
Yes I got it all working fine and able to read live figures while mapping.

Cheers lads . As for colin's input what had you done there as in whats it achive?
Cheers lads . As for colin's input what had you done there as in whats it achive?
Colin's setup reads the flash codes and allows you the reset them

So, guys, i have m43 with a led diagnostic under the hood and you say i can make it obd2 and read it with for example an Androiod app ?

Ok, thanks, it will help me, i want to follow whats happening with oil temperature during driving because i have no oil cooler on my t5 so i want to read the temp

Post 794412 by Dangerous Dave on 2016-01-04 21:37:53

As above, on the 850 (or the p1 x70) there is only an oil pressure sensor which triggers when the pressure drops below a certain level. You would need to add an oil temp sensor and a gauge to monitor the oil temp.

I did not know that...i will add the gauge then. But the rest will be fine for monitoring... Thanks!
I did not know that...i will add the gauge then. But the rest will be fine for monitoring... Thanks!
No worries. Just FYI the live data refresh rate on the M4.4 OBD2 standard protocol is not very fast, something like every 0.5 - 1 second. Thats what I got using the torque app on my phone with a bluetooth elm327 obd adapter.

Post 794420 by t5 pete on 2016-01-04 23:23:57

Also converting obd1 to use a obd2 socket I could only get the genuine volvo reader to work for live data and codes etc volvo fcr couldn't pick any thing up and ide asume that would be the same for the tourque app

Ohhhh too bad....so my snowman is crashed. Ok, ill probably stick to the old school :D
OP is talking about 4.3, don't think you can monitor much at all with 4.3.
Ah yes, I was picking up from the bit about converting to M4.4. You can though if you flash the hacked M4.3 map they did on volvospeed :)

The OBD-II scanners don't seem to work with my 850 with it's "OBD-II" socket under the coin holder. Pretty sure it's a 4.3 too. Won't even connect. Got further with my 106 diesel! I could read battery voltage from that haha
