Number plate fine?

Yesterday we took our 10month old daughter for her first trip to the seaside, and between Ingoldmells and Skegness we were waved into a pull in by the local Feds for having illegally spaced number plates. Now I'm not denying that they are illegally spaced and I'm lucky to have got away with them spaced like that for the last 3 years without being stopped previously, but I did think that the £100 fine was a bit hefty. I've been looking around on the net and it seems that £60 is the most common fine received for plates not complying, can anyone clarify this, or has anyone been pulled for the same thing?

Just one of those things i suppose! They prob had ££££ all else todo.

Once thing that really annoys me are plates that are incorrectly spaced. People do it to make words out of the plate lettering and arrange it to read in a certain way, but this is one of my pet hates. The bottom line, is that number plates should be correctly spaced and made from the correct materials. A genuine number plate maker will make plates to the right specifications, if they don't they are also breaking the law. I have no sympathy for anyone who get's fined or stopped by the Police for having an incorrectly formatted number plate, you chose to have them like that so it's your risk. I think the £100 reasonable and hopefully an effective deterrent against this sort of thing.

The law changed last year regarding fines, all defects are now in the £100 band, number plates, tyres, no tax, lane discipline and seat belts. You were unlucky and it seems harsh but they are slowly clamping down. Take it as a warning, because if you get caught 3 times the courts render the number plate an offence and you have to apply for a new reg at great cost.

Think they are cracking down on it due to Tax Disc's being obsolete, one of the guys on the MB forum was tugged day before you for the same thing. :/

I think all fines are now £100. Beware, they also report the mis-spacing to the DVLA who may stop you from transferring the plate in the future. My parents have KIW 1100 and KIW 1104. They used to be spaced KIWI 100 and 104 until they were stopped and warned. When they tried to transfer them the DVLA objected until They showed evidence that the plate had been used correctly. Some days I find this to be very petty of the government, then some days I can understand as it is the legal marking of a vehicle used in public. With the number of ANPR cameras I'm surprised that there aren't more letters sent out when the system fails to read the plate correctly. They'd make £1000's on the way into TRAX!!
Why not just a producer & 7 days to fix Not as if its a safety issue
Because that's not an effective deterrent against the problem. A fine hits your pocket far more, a producer and 7 days will mean a lot more people will risk it because they know at most, it will cost them about a tenner per plate to re-do.

It won't hit my pocket as I wouldn't bother with a fancy plate (I like the history of the car to be on the plate). or overly harsh for reasons of anarchy prevention - look at sentences for armed robbery compared to murder..

My C70 failed it's M.O.T., on amongst other things the number plates, because the lettering was 3D effect, and apparently since April all lettering has to be solid black. :slap:

It's about time they clamped down on these motorzippers knocking around with number plates the size of post-it notes on the back.

Getting number plates is a PITA these days too......unless you have your own machine lol Image

Having been on the wrong side of the law in the past with regards to number plates I agree that some plates should be an obvious pull, using caps to change letters etc but as far as I'm concerned I think if an ANPR camera reads the plate correctly then there should be no problem. I've had my plates like they are for the last 4 years and not been tugged (touch wood). Mine reads as it should on ANPR as I've seen it on a petrol station monitor behind the counter. My Supra had the registration L60 PRA. With incorrect spacing and cleverly placed caps it basically read L SUPRA so as you can imagine it was an obvious pull.

My plates are spaced correctly but they are far from legal, I have the Volvo emblem on the left hand side and this forums address printed in the middle. Has everyone notified the insurance of there Bush upgrades ? How much people also have illegally tinted front windows on there cars? I also own S6 0RU, I probably would have spaced it S60R U. I do think a fine straight off is harsh, I know if I got pulled I would have them straight off and changed.

The trick is to keep a correctly spaced pair of number plates in the boot, when you get pulled you sincerely apologise to the Officer and explain that you've just purchased a new set and are on the way home to get them fitted.... :) could possibly save you the £100 fine

Post 728844 by t5 pete on 2014-08-10 17:03:42

The problem is people all ready know its illegal and still have it done so no a telling off most likely wont make most people go and correct it but a fine will certainly make most people do it as they wont like paying out like the op of this thread. as for modding car I bet most dont tell the insurance and they run the risk of invalid insurance and even jail time depending on situation im sure many years ago some one from this site went to jail after having a smash i dont know the full story why tho. always be honnest it may cost more in the short term but can save hell of alot in the long run.

I remember a couple of years ago a guy I know got stopped for not have the correct post code etc on the bottom . He waited until they gave him the ticket then he pointed out there car didn't have the code either. They took the ticket back from him and was told to forget about it. Next morning there was a few police vehicle down at the guy that made the plates getting then changed over. The moral of the story is the police are as guilty as any one of breaking ANY laws!!
