Hi all.
Just recently got my hands on a 2000 C70 T5 in need of some TLC. The car belonged to my partner's father from new, and has spent most of it's life being thrashed around north Wales and Cheshire.
I'm looking to steadily bring it up to a really good standard, with a few subtle performance mods.
I don't know an awful lot about modern Volvos, but I am a trained mechanic having worked for Jap tuners for years, and running my own garage for a while specialising in Nissan S chassis cars.
My girlfriend ran the C70 for 18 months before buying a nice shiny 61 plate Scirocco R. Due to the family connection, the C70 won't be sold, so I've taken it on as a long term project. The aim is to tow her GSX-R to the Nurburgring, along with the 'rocco, next summer, and have a bit of fun with all three! I have no intention of letting the C70 be just an also-ran ;)
I'd welcome any advice on the best/most common ways of eeking out extra from these engines, and I'm particularly interested in getting the best out of this chassis. Power is nothing without control, particularly in a FWD.
I'm happy to help other members with mechanical advice, or even get my hands dirty :)
Blair
BTW sorry for the emo username, I've been using it since the mid 90's and it's kind of stuck!

Welcome to the forum from a fellow C70 owner. There's plenty that can be done to improve power, handling, and grip. You might want to have a look at Wobbly Dave's build thread, amongst others, his C70 is currently running 404bhp.

Welcome to the club, you'll get plenty of ideas/advice here......but not from me, I'm barred from anything technical.

Welcome aboard :) Lets have some pictures when you can, some of us rely on pictures lol.
Performance wise, due to the engine management, you can't just throw a boost controller on it and wind the boost up - it'll throw a fit. Same with a dump valve - no go.
R.I.P. kits make a fair bit of difference, it basically reverses the intercooler pipework, giving faster spoolup and more throttle response. A 3" downpipe, sports cat and good quality catback exhaust system will give good gains when combined with a quality remap from a tried and tested tuner (HLM, Shark, BSR, to name but a few). 270-280 bhp should be easily achievable.
Before you attempt all that, a "stage zero" tune up is a must. All fluids, filters, vac lines etc should be renewed, the PCV should be checked and something like a teraclean or injector refurb would be a good idea too.

Just done a stage 0 using good quality parts. The difference was massive!
I'm already looking at breathing options. It seems the map is the major restriction on these engines, it's not particularly flexible for bolt on mods, unlike the jap turbo stuff I've used before. My old R32 GTR ran around 500bhp on the standard map!
The C70 runs a TD04HL-16T, and a low pressure 5psi actuator with a solenoid controller from the ECU, right? I'm tempted to build my own boost controller with the standard solenoid and an Arduino or Raspberry Pi which would allow me to customise the boost map. I've heard these engines don't like high boost at low rpm, so a progressive increase through the rev range suits better. I've done a little mapping with Apexi ECU's in the past, but not for at least 10 years. I'll look into the mappers mentioned here, and see what suits.
I'm a big fan of budget and DIY mods. I'm a firm believer that if you have the skill and the knowledge (and the patience/caution ;) ) you can spend less! I have the skills, and I'm hoping this site will help me build the knowledge. Given that I'm putting myself through a 4 year degree at the moment, I really don't have much in the way of funds. I need to limit the major spending to the vitals that I can't do myself or the parts where quality is essential.
Thanks for the advice so far. Time to go and have read around :)

A good map can cost under £300 and boost, fueling etc is set up to suit. If you start upping the boost without correcting the map, at best it'll throw a fit, at worst you'll melt something important or bend a rod. Your best bet is a good map and a slight tweak with a boost controller of your choice.

Welcome to the forum from a fellow C70 T5 2000 owner, from just north of Manchester.

Still loving my C70 after 4 remaps , 4 engines, 3 gearboxes and a whole load of smiles per hour.
Welcome.
Still gotta beat Dean yet.

I'm from Great Harwood, near Blackburn with a C70, but am I close enough to the big smoke to be classed as a Manc?

That makes me happy thanks. So with all these Mancs, who's a Red and who's a Blue joi? I'm a Claret and Blue.

I lost all interest in football after I discovered lady's beach volleyball. Four incredibly athletic, scantily clad young ladies competing against each other on a beach.
For the uninitiated, the lady at the net signals to her partner at the rear where she would like her to serve the ball to the opposition, however to cover her signals from the said opposition she does it by using finger signals across her bottom, thereby giving her partner and several million other drunken midnight pervs a chance to concentrate for a few seconds on said bottom.
Sad I know but totally absorbing!!!
