I found this and thought it might help, shows all the major rust areas.
May as well all be red lol

It`s that bad for rust :P

I`ve spent 4 hours trying to start the car,
I`ve stripped and cleaned the carb as the floats had stuck to the bottom of the float chamber.
Removed and cleaned/gapped all the plugs.
Cleaned the dizzy cap and rotor arm.
She tries to start but only on cylinders 1 and 2, I`ve got a spark on 3 when the plug is sat on the engine, but I`ve got no spark on 4.
I`ve checked the all plugs and have a spark when the plug is sat on the rocker cover when using plug lead number 1
I think the HT leads are fubar`d so I`ll get some new ones and fingers crossed.
Now do I get these,
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Kerr-Nelson-Ignition-HT-Lead-Set-OEF101-Ideal-Vehicle-Replacement-Fiat-Volvo-/281273217418?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AVolvo%7CModel%3A240&hash=item417d30b18a

Well now it`s a battery I thought I would check the lights etc and the only thing that doesn`t work is a fog light bulb.

That's pretty close mate, but more effort and she'll be there.
Post 748984 by oblark on 2014-11-22 18:18:24
I tried your steel rim on the front and back,
When fitted to the front the rim is "kissing" the suspension leg.
They was plenty of clearance on the rear :)
Post 748987 by Ettienne on 2014-11-22 18:47:51
Ok but the others we discussed may fit slightly slimmer?

Bet they looked good though, filling the arches

Post 749512 by oblark on 2014-11-25 19:22:47
New leads arrived today and as I finished work a bit earlier I thought it would be rude not to fit them and see if she`ll start.
Well no she still won`t start, I`ve even flattened the new battery trying to start her.
I`ve got a spark on all 4 plugs and all the plugs are wet after trying to start it.
I think I need to do a compression test.
Not even a murmur of it catching? not good, excuse my ignorance on the older stuff but cam/crank sensor?
It tries to fire on cylinders 1 & 2 but not on 3 & 4
When I removed the plugs from 1 & 2 they where black, so it could be running rich.
This could be why it`s not firing on 3 & 4 (fuel putting out spark)
As for sensors  it`s got points and a condensor :)

Point's and a condenser...... glad I don't own an old car :)

I assume you've checked the static timing.
Post 749550 by jks on 2014-11-25 22:30:11
bit of brake cleaner or easy start in the carb, while cranking?
you got fuel to carb? filters get blocked over time and tank insides pell off, blocking fuel pipe..
these are simple as. fuel, spark..and of you go.
Post 749551 by oblark on 2014-11-25 22:37:49
I'm using a jerry can on the roof at the moment as I've got no idea what the inside of the tank is like.
I've got fuel to the pump then to the carb and then on the plugs. I've got a spark on all plugs so in theory it should start but it wont.
It's either got low compression on 3 & 4 or its being flooded by the carb.
Post 749567 by jks on 2014-11-26 00:01:59
you running it through lift pump?
Post 749570 by oblark on 2014-11-26 06:47:21
Lift pump ?
The car is a 1983 244 GL, its got points, condenser and a mechanical fuel pump.
These no sensors or electric fuel pumps.
Post 749574 by craigoodwood on 2014-11-26 09:18:49
honestly if it was me id pour a bit of fuel into the intake set fire to it then crank it, i know it sounds rough and drastic but its never failed me :D
Post 749593 by jks on 2014-11-26 13:26:23
Yes, lift pump. Mechanical pump.
I think your problem is fuel delivery.

I`ve put the battery on charge, checked the points gap and stripped the carb.

Post 749627 by 960kg on 2014-11-26 18:19:52
Might help ...might not....
But on the inner wing nearside at the front there is a Bosch Control Unit and on the 740 this is a Powerstage unit and if the screw does not earth because it`s rusty...no start or run...or bad misfires.
Because your 240 is distributor etc. it may not be a cause but worth checking!
Had this trouble with both my 740`s...
Even just tipping new petrol in the carb aperture it should still fire and run if only for seconds!
Post 749783 by oblark on 2014-11-27 17:48:35
After another 2 hours this afternoon I`ve finally got it started.

When it first started all you could here was the sound of drive belts slipping and you could smell burning rubber.
Once they stopped slipping all I could hear was the baffles rattling in the exhaust.
I let it run until it warmed up and had to adjust the slow running, it idles nice no funny noises or smoke :)

this may help rob, in the old days we used to use steel trailer mudguards turned upside down to repair wheelwells, just need a bit of trimming to fit.

Post 750232 by oblark on 2014-12-01 13:41:51
I`ve been doing some research in to the 240 injection fuel pump set up.
The 240 uses a in tank pump then another pump under the rear seats to pump the fuel to the injector rail @ 3bar.
Trying to get hold of a external fuel pump and cradle is like looking rocking horse cr@p.
So I`m going to go down the route of fitting a 850 fuel pump in the tank which will pump the fuel to the injector rail @ 3bar so no need for the external pump, I`ll put the fuel filter in the engine bay where it can be got at easily.
The only problem with the 850 fuel pump it is fatter than the 240 one so it`ll be a bit of a squeeze to get it the tank.
Post 750233 by M-R-P on 2014-12-01 13:55:08
Keep it up Rob, I'll be pestering you for some "steer from the rear" action soon ;)
Post 751126 by oblark on 2014-12-09 10:02:18
As she is a early 80's model the speedo is driven off of the gearbox, but the 940 gets it speedo drive from the back axle. So to fit a 940 engine and box I'd have to also fit a late 240 axle and instruments. This could be a right can of worms that I dont to open.
I'm not looking to get massive amounts of bhp (150ish) out of it so I'm going to tune the B21A engine by fitting twin webers 45 DCOE`s and a tubular exhaust.
After spendings hours of searching I`ve found a place in Germany that make tubular manifolds for £220, The bit that`s really going to sting are the carbs £250 EA + manifold £200 and linkage £80 but it`s all old skool bolt on.
I`ve also been looking into high flow heads and high lift cams, the head to get is the 100405 with its cam. So I`ll be on the look at later for that head in the breakers. The plan is to get the car on the road for the summer. (All going well)

What about motorbike carbs and a plenum?
Post 751134 by kmb on 2014-12-09 12:15:41
Twin Webers or Throttle bodies from a motorbike... Along with RWD this has potential to be great fun, enjoying the thread!
Post 751135 by M-R-P on 2014-12-09 12:18:03
I'm just thinking about the fiesta we saw at the Uxbridge RR day. Had a ST170 engine with bike carbs on it. Made over 200bhp and the noise was biblical!
Post 751138 by oblark on 2014-12-09 12:48:14
I wont be going down the throttle body route as this means I`ll need fuel injection and a ecu.
As for motorbike carbs, I don`t no of a 4 cylinder 2.1 ltr motorbike running carbs
This is why I`m going down the tried and tested route of weber 45`s
I had a ford sierra which I ran twin 45`s and it roared on full chat and went like the clappers :)
Post 751139 by M-R-P on 2014-12-09 12:55:31

Any hoo... I was just chucking the idea out there ;)

Had some spare time today so I fit the bilstein rear shocks that I got from ebay.
For a car that has been stood for so long the bolts where not to bad to undo, just a good dosing with WD40 and off they came, when it came to refitting them a good coat of copperslip :)
The old shocks are in good order for oil shocks, no signs of any leakage so if anyone some 240 shocks (age unknown) let me no :)

It appears that parcel force drivers can`t read. I left a note on the front door for all signed for deliveries to be left with neighbours. Royal mail driver left a parcel with a neighbour but parcel force didn`t. So I`ve made a the sign bigger so hopefully the idiot will see it tomorrow when he tries to deliver my parcel.

After I relaised I`d ££££ed up and brought the wrong head from the breakers.
I started to do a bit of body work, treated the wheel ache with some Kurust then a thin coat of filler, rubed it down and primed with etch primer. Just nneds a fatting back with some wet & dry then it`ll be ready for the satin lacquer.

I phoned the breakers this morning and there will refund me for the 631 head :)
After the ££££ up over the 631 head I`ve been looking into the 531 heads and have found that it will fit the B21A
The only head that flows the same as the 531 is the 405 head, this was fitted to the B21E engine. You try finding a later 240 in the breakers around here !!!
So after asking if anyone had a 405 head on the 240 owners club faceache page. I`ve got my hands on a 405 head, just needs overhauling as it`s been stored for a while.

Todays job weld up both front outriggers, On closer expection the N/S outrigger just had surface rust so it was Kurusted the undersealed.
The drivers side was a different store, the outrigger, floor by the seat and the floor by the jacking point where as rotten as a pear. So spent a few hours flat on my back welding repair panels.
Once i`d finished welding I swapped over the brake and fog lights.
This is how they where,

Now the fog light is inboard while the brake light is under the indicator.
When can we expect a startup video :)
Not for a month or two.
As I'm converting a N/A which had its speedo drive from the gearbox and the B230FK has a electronic speedo drive in the rear axle which the ecu uses to adjust the idle.
If i tried to start it without the electronic speedo it run rough and I wouldn't be able to stop the engine.

Lot of work going on here, nice to see all the home fabricated parts!
Post 762589 by oblark on 2015-03-06 19:47:42
I phoned volvo for the price and delivery on the gear stick gaitor only to find it`s no longer avaliable.
So with a sheet of rubber and some industrial strength super glue I made my own gaitor.
Also changed the front discs and pads.
The Timming belt and drive belts finally arrived from euro car parts but the drive belts are twice the length they should be. Phoned them up and was told they where the right ones according to they records. So after measuring the old belts (10AX0888) I found the right ones but they are from a 83 vauxhall cavalier but as long as they fit who cares :)

Had to go to the Portsmouth branch of euro car parts to collect the right alternator belts.
While in the aera dropped in to see Steve and went down to Harris`s the breakers to see if they had a 940 lpt in as I could do with the radiator as mine leaks.
But managed to pick a 012 maf from a ferrari f355 which is a straight swap for the standard 940 maf.

Mounted both ecu`s to some 3mm aluminiun plate then fitted the injection ecu to the passengers side dash under the glove box. The ignition ecu was mounted to the dash by the steering column.
Once the both ecu`s where donnected I fitted a 12v bulb to each of the fuel pump supply wires. When nthe ignition was turned on both bulbs came on for a few seconds then went off, when the engine was cranked over both bulbs came back on. So it looks good for the fuel side of things just need to check the ignition side next.

Did a few hours work on the 240 today.
In readiness for the GLT rear axle I "hot bolted" all the rear suspension bolts and made sure all the brake line joints/nipples are not siezed.

Did the 240 turbos not run K-Jetronic injection....not saying it's better than what you are doing, just a comment
Post 764002 by oblark on 2015-03-15 22:30:44
From what I've seen on turbobricks the 240 turbos ran a mechanical fuel injection.
The later UK spec models had electronic fuel injection (lh2.2 )

Also i now have a working windscreen washer pump.
Post 764912 by oblark on 2015-03-22 20:19:26
After the Portmouth meet yesterday we went to the local breakers as they have got in a early 960, 940 lpt and a 16v 740
The engine & box had been removed from the left hand drive 16v 740.
I manged to get the rad out of the 940 lpt and the rad temp switch from the 960
I got a radiator fan from a guy on VOC but it didn`t come with the shroud, I did a bit of research and found that the 940/960 shroud only fits the 560mm radiator and I have the 450mm radiator. So using the 940 viscous fan shroud and some aluminium brackets I got the fan to fit the shroud.
As the 940 uses the same fan relay as the 850 I had a spare one, It was just a case of wiring in the relay, fan, temp sensor and the ecu supply.

Fitted the external fuel pump and plumbed both pumps in. Primed the fuel system and sprung a couple of leaks on either side of the fuel filter. Need to replace the copper washer with rubber seals.
As the fuel system was primed it would a shame not to try and start the engine, well it didn`t.
I`ve got a spark but the plugs where bone dry after 2-3 minutes of cranking, looks like the ecu has a immobilizer, lucky I`ve a second ecu so I`ll try again tomorrow.

A good achievement and shows off robs talents, basically a £££££ heap of a car and a box full of engine parts and now it's a turbo conversion with custom made parts.
Chuffing quick job as well really having to deal with all the issues the came came with before converting.
The sort of work that should be encouraged on the forum, rather than people ridiculing threads to death with stupid posts, the forum won't pick up if this keeps happening.

The plan for this weekend was to fit the axle so I could have a working speedo.
BUT parcels2go and my yodel had other ideas.
The diff was dispatched on the 8-4-15 on a 24hr delivery service. The courier "ran out of time" so my parcel was returned to the depot at 18:00 on the 9-4-15
Due to the fact the courier “ran out of time” it doesn`t count as a failed delivery so I can`t reschedule the delivery or change the delivery address. So my parcel has now been at the yodel depot since 18:00 on the 9-4-15 which is long than it took to come down from north wales.
Now the idiots are saying it MITE be delivered on 13-4-15 Mite be !!!!!! it £$%&in better be.
Of all the couriers I`ve dealt with through sending and receiving things parcels2go and my yodel are the most useless bunch of brain dead wan£ers.

Finally yodel delivered my parcel, it only took them 120 hrs to deliver it when it was surposed to be on a 24hr delivery.
Anyway I cracked on with assembling the diff tonight, gave a good clean in clutch and brake cleaner then fitted into the housing.
Also fitted the Classic swede axle to trailing arm poly bushes.

After sorting the stalling problem out it was on to the passenger door central locking fault.
The door wouldn`t lock with the central locking but if I locked the passenger door with the key then unlocked the car with drivers lock it would unlock. Took the door card off and sprayed the lock and linkage with WD40 and all sorted. The inside of the door card looked like fungs breeding ground, this due to the fact that the plastic liner had been removed from the door so out came the duck tape and a bin bag and 5 mins later door had be sealed.

Looking good, comparatively it's certainly less of a brute than the T5-R in the pictures, it's certainly going to surprise people.
When is the MOT? Will you be applying some light tuning? I suppose it doesn't need a cat with the age of the vehicle which is a nice bonus.

Poly engine and gearbox mounts from classic swede in the harder red poly. Well the engine is solid and I can now feel the engine running :)

Did some more testing on the speedo and it`s f***ed, I`ve got a AC voltage that starts at 1v and climbs as the speed increases,
Tried a early speedo and that worked but at idle it recorded 40 mph so it`s a little bit out,
So I got bored and fitted these :)
The car started and ran ok with the ME7 blues,

It was delivered by "my hermes" and left on the door step.
The remapped chips for these ecu's can be brought from ebay for about £30
I could buy the chips, the eprom loader from ebay and load the remapped files myself as I've got the files but it's easier to buy the chips.
Post 779173 by kmb on 2015-07-26 09:59:25
What level of adjustability does the changed chip give? Just interested in what parameters you'll have once fitted.
I've used My Hermes a couple of times and they do seem a bit less concerned with leaving parcels unattended, but the price is usually very good (not sure if you've seen they have recently halved their std cover from £100 to £50).
You haven't mentioned, unless I've missed it, what the handling is like in one of these old 240's, do they go around corners OK?
I've only ever been in one, it was the late 70's and my primary school headmaster was delivering me to hospital after a minor accident. Can't remember much about the trip
Post 779179 by oblark on 2015-07-26 11:23:08
The EZK chip just gives the car a bit more ignition advance to stop the engine "pinking" under high boost.
Your ecu is coming back to you by my hermes but will need a signature :)
As for the handling on the 240 its got very stiff suspebsion and goes around corners like it's on rails :)
