Hi - I am about to take delivery of my dream car next week ..... an S80 V8 Executive (took me over a year's searching!). Problem is, I'm not sure what to do with my current car - an S60R. I am torn between letting my daughter drive it, because of its AWD, and selling it. She is not a great driver, so I am worried it may have too much power for her, but it should be a lot safer in the winter (particularly in the snow) than her C70cc. If I do decide to sell it, how much do you think it is worth? It is a 2003, auto, 71k, with sunroof, satnav and factory fit phone. No mechanical issues at all (Volvo main dealer has done all necessary mechanical work and I do all my own servicing) but some cosmetic work is needed. Any thoughts on my dilema would be welcome. I am really looking forward to going to some of the organised VPCUK meets next year !

Nice car's but mpg will be fun, unless you are like me don't use them much. I take it the road tax is up around the £480 mark:smirk: Ps Hi & welcome along hope to see some photos.

We've had a couple of peeps come to the southern meet from the Watford area before. You should pop along

Post 753546 by LiamT4 on 2014-12-28 16:38:21

Welcome. Any pics of said cars?
Nice car's but mpg will be fun, unless you are like me don't use them much. I take it the road tax is up around the £480 mark:smirk: Ps Hi & welcome along hope to see some photos.
I'd be surprised if its much worse than an s60r. I was getting the same sort of mpg from my 540i as most people seemed to be getting out of the R.

Post 753560 by Ettienne on 2014-12-28 17:19:46

I get 21mpg around town on nitro plus, normal driving school runs etc. V8s I've heard are a big more juicy, but not much
I get 21mpg around town on nitro plus, normal driving school runs etc. V8s I've heard are a big more juicy, but not much
In my 540 i got around 22 in mixed driving, work and back that type of stuff, and it would do low to mid 30s on a long run. The s80 v8 is a newer, more advanced, car than my bmw was, so it shouldn't really be any worse unless its a lot heavier.

Very nice! A LPG'd S80 V8 would be a great daily driver ;) Regarding the S60R's value... they are a really hard car to put a price on. With full history and low mileage though I would say don't let it go for less than 4k.

Post 753686 by M-R-P on 2014-12-29 01:41:41

V8 :) welcome aboard. (the S60 will be faster by the way ;) )

Post 753691 by LeeJones on 2014-12-29 07:05:47

Hi Santa ..... many thanks ..... this is pretty much what I have decided to do now. Problem is .... she needs ISOFIX for the child seat, so going to my local main dealer today (Colindale) and see if it can be retro-fitted.

Post 753692 by LeeJones on 2014-12-29 07:07:26

Hi Frankie ..... oh, ok then !

Post 753693 by LeeJones on 2014-12-29 07:11:03

Hi .... thank you..... haven't even seen the car yet. Being delivered from a Volvo dealer up north tomorrow, so I don't know exactly what the exhaust sounds like yet. I am hoping for the same sound I have heard on some youtube videos. If it doesn't sound the same, this will be its first mod !

Post 753694 by LeeJones on 2014-12-29 07:12:40

Thanks Graham .... looking forward to meeting some of you guys one day.

Post 753695 by LeeJones on 2014-12-29 07:17:59

Hi Harvey .... thanks. I am getting 18 from my S60R (drive it fairly "spirited", shall we say), so I expect to get about 16 from the V8. The S80 might just tone down the boy racer in me though, in which case I will probably get about the same. It is so great seeing the looks on their faces at the next red light when they have just been taken by a Volvo. You are right about the road tax. May not be such a big difference now but you never know what they are going to do in the future, eh.

Post 753696 by LeeJones on 2014-12-29 07:19:10

I fully intend to, Ettienne. Will be great meeting up with some like minded Volvo enthusiasts !

Post 753697 by LeeJones on 2014-12-29 07:21:50

Thanks Liam. No pics yet as I bought it before they even had a chance to put any up on the Volvo website. Delivering it tomorrow to me from up north so will get some shortly. I think you will be right about the mpg.

Post 753698 by LeeJones on 2014-12-29 07:24:14

Nitro plus??

Post 753699 by LeeJones on 2014-12-29 07:27:47

Thanks Moose. I thought that would be about the right figure but have just about decided to give it to my daughter. No sure I could bring myelft to lpg my V8 lol ..... but you never know !

Post 753700 by V70 Graham on 2014-12-29 07:27:49
Nitro plus??
V Power Nitro + (posh petrol)

Post 753701 by LeeJones on 2014-12-29 07:30:33

Thanks for the welcome M-R-P. I hope you are wrong about the speed though. On paper, the V8 is 0.2 seconds quicker to 62 than my S60R. Time will tell though. Will keep you posted. (could always put a turbo on it, eh ;-) )

Post 753702 by LeeJones on 2014-12-29 07:33:04

Ok, right .... that's the only stuff I will put in my S60R and likewise for my new V8 !! I have been known to go 20 miles out of my way to find a Shell station lol.

Post 753703 by LeeJones on 2014-12-29 07:39:45

It took about 3 tankfuls of Shell Nitro+ before I noticed the difference, so for anyone thinking of trying it ..... keep on in there for a while if you don't notice any improvement. Problem is, if you put in anything else, no matter how little, you will be back to square one and have to start again. Takes a long time for the ECU to allow the engine to advance the timing but will drop it back instantly the moment it spots anything inferior.
Welcome to the forum, look forward to seeing pics.
Thanks Stribo ..... I am looking forward to seeing the CAR lol. Bought it sight unseen from up north and they are deliving it tomorrow. Bought it from a Volvo dealer though, so can't really go wrong. Did the same with my S60R .... came down from Scotland.
V8 :) welcome aboard. (the S60 will be faster by the way ;) )
Just for comparison my auto 540i managed a 14.4@100mph 1/4mile which is the same as standard, manual s60r. The 540 had 286bhp and 325lb/ft and weighed 1710kg compared to the s80 V8s 315bhp and 325lb/ft...............but unfortunately i don't know the s80s weight.
Thanks for the welcome M-R-P. I hope you are wrong about the speed though. On paper, the V8 is 0.2 seconds quicker to 62 than my S60R. Time will tell though. (all this is based on a guessed weight similar to my 540 though, so could be completely wrong lol)

Post 753926 by LeeJones on 2014-12-30 18:25:36

Ok, its official (at least for me) ..... the S80 V8 is much faster than the S60R (at least compared to the early automatics which have reduced torque on takeoff). I don't even have to do my launch control sequence as it does not have a turbo to kick in. I LOVE this car !

My 540 idled at just 450rpm, yet if you turned the TC off, it would leave some nice stripes on the road ;) At 70mph in top gear@1800rpm and it would still go lol

S80 V8 is a rare beast. In the last 11 years I've only ever been out to two. One was a puncture, the other was non start due to a fault with the steering lock module (which incidentally is a very common fault and about £700 to put right). I'm guessing it's an auto? I'd definately have a custom exhaust fitted, not too loud, just subtle. Will make a big difference to throttle response but your cheek muscles will ache like ££££ because you can't stop smiling! Regards the mpg on the S60R, that seems very poor. At worse my VR was getting 18-20 with spirited driving, 130k, blocked pcv and a cracked IC! Lol. Now that's all fixed, last week after 4 days of barely changing gear below 4k and a few times into 3 figures big big smiles all round, having fun with a few other like minded drivers, I'm struggling to get less than 23mpg! As soon as I drive smoothly it creeps back up to 24-25mpg. At 70mph I'm getting 35mpg....and I've never ever put anything other than Shell V power in mine and like you, will drive out my way to find a shell garage if I'm out my area. The shell app comes in very handy for planning long journeys.

Would I be able to get away with just a rear box or does it have to be cat back? My S60R was used mainly for very short trips. Would always let it idle to warm up first as I knew I would be driving it hard immediately. This is probably why my mpg was so bad. Also it is an auto (5 speed), so would be worse than your car. I used to get 34 mpg on a motorway trip, so I don't think there is anything major happening with it. Only has 70k on it too.

If you want I can recommend a custom exhaust place to go to. I had mine done there and other members have used them with good results. It's in Kent. You won't achieve anything with just a rear silencer as the bottleneck will still be the center sections of exhaust. Most recommend minimum of Cat back to notice and significant gains or you can go all out and get them to build you a whole system. However, before you do any of that you must make sure your car is 'Stage 0' ready.
