Due to the fact we have solar and no need for gas, we recently took out the old gas boiler / central hot air heater.
We spoke with southern gas who said we could just shut off the house valve and have no standing charge bill for a while.
They recently started charging us again so free of charge they removed the gas meter as we would not be going back on gas.
After a while they have to shut the gas off in the road to our house, unfortunately for them this is not possible as there are no stop valves to our property just the entire road.
They now have to dig up the road as I don't want a stop valve on our property as we are in the next couple of years having a new drive way done.
This £7 a month they wanted to charge us has just cost them thousands lol.

Lol!
I recently fitted a boiler to a small shop that had been empty for a while as it was being converted to a tea room.
Boiler all fitted up, radiators, sinks etc. Came to commission the boiler and it wouldn't run - No gas.
After lots of head scratching, it turned out that when the gas main was replaced in the street abiut a year earlier, they simply cut off the supply to the shop.
The gas board wanted to charge the new owner something like £10k to reinstate the supply!
Needless to say, he told them where to go, as he never asked them to remove it and neither did the previous owner!!

They could have left the meter in shut off. The reason they are doing it is because we could reconnect the supply unmetered and get free gas (I'm guessing).

Not exactly the same but once bought a house that turned out to be missing a phone connection to the main network. It had the BT sockets installed inside the house but someone (including the surveyors) forgot to tell me that they weren't hooked up.
Turned out that the nearest place to tie in was the next village a couple of miles away :)

My dad and step mum had a large house in Hertfordshire 4 acres, stables, 4 bed large detached cottage, really expensive place and the electricity came in on a cable from the next neighbour a farm.
