Questions for T4 owners

I am getting a 1999 V40 T4 tomorrow and when I looked at it I noticed that it has a manual boost control under the bonnet. I think it would be a good idea to fit a boost gauge so I know it is set right, have any of you fitted gauges and if you have how and where in the car have you fitted it? Have any of you fitted manual boost controls and if you have what boost do you have it set at or what should it be as standard? A few questions I know but I want things to be right so your answers will be welcome.

I played about with a manual boost controller on the car, however I found out it made no difference on mine because it is ecu controlled. If this is the phase 1 then it might be different. I turned the actuator round on mine to turn the boost up to 18psi. As regards to the mounting of it, I found it annoying on top of my dashboard so have placed it under the stereo in that cubby hole, I know it's not a safe place but it's out of my windscreen and let's just face it, I don't need to look at it every day. Standard psi should be 12.

Image I would bin the MBC and run the stock BCS. Stock should be 14psi.

Thanks for the replies. I was just looking at those gauges on ebay. It is a phase one so perhaps a previous owner found it useful having a manual boost but I don't know what it is set at. On the test drive it felt OK, plenty of boost and no horrible noise from the turbo but it is handy to know what the standard psi should be and what you can safely go up to also. I think the standard boost sensor is still there, will know more tomorrow when I get it.

Yes it depends where you read about boost but some figures say 12psi, 13psi and 14psi lol. Mine was 14 on the gauge. I would say get a gauge and see where you're at before you tinker with boost settings.

Is 18psi safe for a bog standard engine or is that asking for trouble?

^^ what they said, might be worth doing a search on how to check your actuator as well. My MBC made things worse on my T4 cos the actuator was screwed.

I had a t4 that was running 18-19psi, but that had been remapped which, if done properly, should be more reliable.

Stuff all that cobblers ( even if correct, lol ) Just plant your foot down and see how you like it ! My recently bought T4 of '99 vintage with another scrapyard turbo fitted starts to light the wheels up at 3000 revs and 'hops about a bit' from there on in ! No idea what it is running and don't really care as most of my driving in it is around town/city and still return about 30 mpg ....................less when I clog it up yhe motorway stretch fom Leeds or Bradford. In other words JUST ENJOY THE DAMN THING, no one can say how the feel in YOUR car as it is a personal decision.

18psi should be ok just don't floor it until the revs get up.
18psi should be ok just don't floor it until the revs get up.
Thanks for that, may go a little less as don't want to hurt the old girl although there is pleny of life in her. May try around 16psi if it is OK with this MBC on, if not I will put it back as standard.... for now.

I think for now I would like to put it back as standard until I get to know this car, give it a service etc... The problem is i don't know which hose goes where on the original boost controller. One pipe has a Yellow band on, the other a Blue band but what goes where? See photos.

Thanks for that, it was pointed out to me over there on a similar thread and that the diagram should be under my bonnet but if it is I missed it. At least this confirms it. Cheers.
