I dare say some of you have had imported cars in the past. We've found a nice mk1 mx5 in lovely condition.its not got the usual rusted arches and sills. We are getting it cheap as it has no mot. But I've checked it over and don't think it needs much. Maybe a bush or two. Its going to be my fiances car. She just phoned her insurance and they won't insure it unless it has a certificate of conformity. How do I go about getting one? Or should it be supplied with the car? Its been in the UK since 2002.

I would have thought it would have been issued with one when it was adapted after import. Presuming it has been adapted - speedo adjusted for MPH, fog light etc. No idea how you'd find out though. Imports can be a right PITA to insure though. I had a Pajero (Jap import Shogun) years ago and struggled to find inurers that would touch it.

Speedos been changed. Fog light was fitted then removed and has been modified to replace one of the reverse lights. Just needs a red bulb fitted. Its too nice a car not to buy for the price. But if insurance is going to be a hassle then we might leave it. I'll phone around tonight and try find out.

Thinking about it my renault is an import & never had any problems with insurance. Mind you that's been in the UK since '84. There's loads of MX5s / Eunos roadsters about it must be possible //edit renault log book says "Was registered/used overseas. Declared manufactured 1984" & first registration in UK August of the same year. Too old for CoC maybe :)

I don't see how it can be an issue as its been on UK roads since 2002.
