My rear big brake kit arrived yesterday and the previous owner had them painted Porsche GT3 orange. As my front b.b.k set up comes from the factory painted BMW Phoenix Gold, I wanted the rears to match. My front setup are these. Image My rear setup arrived like this. Image On the previous owners car. Image They look like this now after me painting them, adding performance stickers, then lacquering and then fitting all the link pipes and nipples etc back on. Image Image Image I'm really happy with how they turned out. Roll on Thursday when they get fitted to my car :B_steerin

Was it easy to do this mike?

Post 769082 by MIKESC70T5 on 2015-04-19 01:48:24

Yes mate, I took everything off so I was just left with the caliper housing. 180 grit wet/dry rubbed down. Masked off the Pistons. Tak rag, wiped over the caliper. Sprayed the paint on, 5 coats in total. Let dry overnight and then attached stickers and then a few coats of lacquer applied. Refitted all the bits.

They look very good, I have mine blasted then paint, just easier for me and I use upol acid etch primer as a first coat.

if sanding works fine that would be my preference, I can sand blast at work, I would be uncomfortable in case I got grit somewhere where it shouldn't be. I've never stripped down a caliper before, is it worth changing seals?

Fortunately for me the previous owner replaced all the seals before he had them painted. These rears are purely for aesthetics so they match the front setup. I'm not expecting any improvement in braking. Changing the fronts made a massive difference though. For the £400 I paid I got the rear calipers, hel braided lines, custom brackets and half worn yellow stuff pads. It was a no brainer, not that the wife sees it that way though :hilarious

This is something I've always wanted to do, something always comes up that needs doing so this gets forgotten about. I said because it's brembos I would want it done right but seeing the results you achieved I know I could do that, its just the mechanical bit before and after that's putting me off.

Post 769226 by Ettienne on 2015-04-19 20:40:51

What pads did you go for? I'm looking at ferrodo std or ds2500. The original brembo pads had ferrodo stamped on them apparently.

Taking them apart was easy. As for fitting to the car, I could do it myself, but I'm not confident I'd bleed the brakes properly, so my local garage is doing it for me.
What pads did you go for? I'm looking at ferrodo std or ds2500. When these wear out I won't get anything too expensive as its only the rears.

Yeah just taking them off etc then bleeding them, I have a mate that could help me bleed them. I don't like tinkering too much.

Post 769233 by Ettienne on 2015-04-19 21:11:51

I'll use ferodo back and front as oe pads and cheap £28 for the rears
Yeah just taking them off etc then bleeding them, I have a mate that could help me bleed them. I don't like tinkering too much.
Tis incredibly easy, just follow Haynes manual, you'll laugh how easy it is once you've done it.
Tis incredibly easy, just follow Haynes manual, you'll laugh how easy it is once you've done it.
Really? Thanks I will do then, will get this done then, hopefully reasonably soon, do I need to buy any sort of clamps for the lines? Would it ve a good idea to put new fluid in? I doubt that has ever been changed

Post 769243 by Ettienne on 2015-04-19 21:54:00

I have a fitting or two to fit open lines but you can use a clamp easily enough. I'm flushing the p2 when I change to braided lines and the other 2 850s have been flushed.

Post 769250 by volvokid on 2015-04-19 22:21:46

What kinda fittings are they? or is each car different

Post 769264 by Ettienne on 2015-04-19 23:48:54

Just use clamps I have blind m10 x 1 fittings, but you'll just confuse yourself.

Post 769265 by volvokid on 2015-04-20 00:00:11

Ok I'm guessing something like vice grips are out of the question incase it cuts the line?

Post 769267 by MIKESC70T5 on 2015-04-20 00:47:09

These calipers have two bleed nipples on them, if I was to do it myself, do I have to bleed both of them?

Post 769277 by Ettienne on 2015-04-20 08:19:24
Ok I'm guessing something like vice grips are out of the question incase it cuts the line?
Very much so, plastic line clamps is what u want but they don't work too good on braided lines, that's why I use the blind fittings

Post 769278 by Ettienne on 2015-04-20 08:20:17
These calipers have two bleed nipples on them, if I was to do it myself, do I have to bleed both of them?
I think the first time I fitted Renault brembos, I opened the nipples and they virtually self bled.

Post 769794 by MIKESC70T5 on 2015-04-23 23:24:49
Looking good Mike. What paint did you use?. I want a spray paint but don't know a good one just for brakes
A gold one  Just an aerosol two pack paint I made up at work then just standard lacquer on top.

Post 769798 by volvokid on 2015-04-23 23:40:44

Ah ok hope it lasts ok.
