Went to meet Jamsey today to collect the s70r as usual it was great to catch up again.
Onto the car
Tbh I really feel sorry for James as this certainly isn't true to its original description and he bought it in good faith.
To start off its needs a fair bit of cosmetic work doing with both front and rear bumpers needing a lick of paint the passenger side wing need re fixing at the bottom and it also needs a new spoiler as it hasn't got one.
I also noticed the bulbs are either out or have been taken out for the abs system and tracs system also the service light aswell
And here's a quick list of what needs doing up to now
The car is currently in limp mode as it will not rev past 3k and with no turbo response what so ever (very long drive home).
The braking system needs a major over haul along with the abs sorting.
one wheel is badly damaged.
the passenger seat electric's do not work and is currently in the most awaked laid back position.
Front suspension needs inspection.
Door Check straps broken.
both front door speakers and dash top speaker not working.
Both front door window motors very weak.
Front passenger wheel bearing is shot.
Bad knocking from front end.
New power steering pump needed.
need to try and repair remote fobs currently broken.
New bulbs for speedo warnings.
Tracking needs aligning.
one new wheel.
new rear spoiler.
And that's with out giving it a look over in the garage I may have time on sunday to get it on the lift and give it a good going over.
One thing I must say James has been fantastic he was extremely honest and has been a true gent.

Giving the benefit of doubt - one man's pride & joy is another man's scrapper for sure...but warning bulbs missing is something else and shows intent to hide faults, probably for MOT purposes? Not good at all. I thought the unwillingness to rev would be the MAF but if you've tried a good one it can't be that.
You are a top man for taking that on & keeping it on the forum as I hoped. Certainly worth more in parts atm.

I've got another ecu that I've repaired in the garage so hopefully it will cure the problems also been reading and this can cause the safe mode

Hopefully that list of faults will reduce when the ECU is repaired, interesting about the safe mode. Amazing how much stuff you are finding on this car that hasn't been mentioned before..!

It's just a case of elimination J plugged it into the comp and mainly it's just all the abs faults.
The main fault I'm hoping that's causing it is the 443 I doubt it's the actual pump and just the ecu after doing some reading it seems this can cause the limp mode.
After work tomorrow I'm hoping to get it on the lift and have a further inspection

Abs ecu now re fitted and no codes stored but still have the safe mode issue.
Also got it on the lift and more joys to find
Needs a new steering rack the seals have failed and leaking fluid.
Track rod ends x2
Needs 4 tyres chunks out of side wall and badly perished
Front discs and pads
Bodged fuel line to fuel filter
O/f side cv boot
O/f abs ring
2 new rear shocks
Top mounts X2
Timing belt
N/r side arch liner
Turbo return seals

Yeah the rest is no concern and easy work but just need to sort the limp mode my main problem is im just packed out with work at the min so only getting the odd hour here and there which is a rite pain.
And with the fcr showing no fault codes its just a case of elimanation

All original from factory thats whats stumping me as this sort of problem is normally with autos and logs codes but absoutly nothing going to test the tps when i get time then foamy is coming over at the weekend so will do some testing with ecus as his is a v70r

It will read codes etc... Just gives very little if any live data, over 2 years since I last played with it, but I also have access to a Delphi setup which will work also

I've got vida and had it for 2 years and pretty good with it now, especially when it comes to the auto gearbox side of things, I offer support to a couple of garages locally when they get problems and they do me favours when I need them I,e if I need a ramp etc, they fitted my downpipe for free, which was nice.
I also have a very good code reader for Volvos that will read anything with an obd2 port as back up for the cars vida won't work on especially the volfcr cars.

What about throttle position sensor? Or crank / cam sensors.

Well the battery that came with the car was far too small so I put a larger one on for u. Looking at that link I posted, the leads can be checked by looking at the condition of ends and checking charging voltage at either end of the cable (battery end and alternator end)

Spent a little more time on the silver shed lol
New power steering pump fitted now really pissing fluid out of rack but at least it's quiet.
Tried a 3rd maf
Replaced fly wheel sensor
Repaired passanger front wing and mud flap
Inspected passanger seat power is getting to it but still no function.
And naughty naughty the bulbs were missing
New bulbs fitted now much better
Also the drivers dash under tray is missing so also need a new one of those
Also drove it round back with live date and nothing is a miss
So now just got to wait while weekend for when Foamy comes to try his ecu

Update time.
Mark foammanmark came over today which was good to catch up I also tried his spare ecu to which it's didn't make any improvement but the S70r original ecu wasn't showing any fault codes but now I've tried this other one here's what it brought up
I must admit the auto box code threw me enough to ring volvo and ask weather it was a factory manual to which it is so I'm assuming that marks spare ecu must have once come from a auto.
So I've got a few things else to check now but still not actually pin pointing any thing directly.

Just a thought - if a knackered ABS ECU can cause limp mode....is the right unit fitted?

I re fitted the oiginal abs pump yesterday as it was a replacement I put on while I repaired the one all faults are gone on both pumps bar a left wheel sensor so looks like that's another fault to sort.
I've also bee reading and they do have a accelerometer sensor fitted which can reduce performance and mpg

I rememeber reading through nordicks threads and noticed he said he had fitted a new rad ive noiced the rad pack is loose so im hoping he may have forgot to connect it back up.
I wonder if it was since he changed the rad when this problem started as also on vida it stated this failing can also bring the code 621 up fuel tank pressure sensor fault.

Thank you it will certainly scrub upto be a nice car with a lick of paint and ironing out all the faults but one thisngs for sure it cannot be quicker than my gul as theres no way the misses is having a faster car than mine lol

We nailed down a similar problem on my dads v70 the same way. So many codes we couldn't figure out what was happening.Looked deeper on Vida for what wasn't showing up where it should be. Big fat whole where the abs module should have been. Sometimes looking for the needle you just have to take the haystack out of the picture. good luck with the search fella.

Hopefully sorted and due to a blocked cat removed it from the exhaust housing today and there is certainly an improvement even with it running rough with the down pipe missing so hopefully got a spare in garage and will fit it possibly next weekend if I have a hour free.
Also any one got any crystal head lights for sale as I need to renew the head lights any way.

Had a hour today and got all the front end mechanical work done bar the seals in steering rack I striped the front suspension to fine the knocking and it was down to the left strut top bolt being loose.
Hopefully on Tues I can sort the rear brakes and adjust the hand brake and also a set of new rear shocks then all that's left is underseal.

Good to see another one being saved mate, as you say most would have scrapped it, but some have to be saved. We've done the same with the V70R, we bought it knowing it needed work, but probably weren't aware how much, it's since had a replacement auto box, new rad, new front wishbones, new track rod end, new heater matrix, new cam seals, new ignition system etc. It was worth saving though, just a shame we'll be selling it soon.

Replaced front speakers now all working
Got central locking working and repaired drivers side
Replaced driver rear caliper as old one cast had broken for pins
Adjusted hand brake
I'm sure I read that it'd had new cables certainly not and their very tired so need new cables for next mot

Went to fit spoiler and nuts on brackets are absolutely sized in and are now just spinning so that's that spoiler out of the question as with it being a 850 on they need the brackets to hold them down on the s70 boot.

Dropped wheels off at metal magic and decided to alter the 850 spoiler so it does fit correctly and drilled the original bolts out of the brackets that were just spinning.

Coming along really nicely Pete, a real testament to your workmanship.
Do you have any advice for painting bumpers? My front and rear if I wanted to tidy the V70 up could do with paint but only if a reasonable job can be done by a home mechanic on a budget...dirty TDI doesnt want much spending on her!!! ;)

Erm as for paint best thing is preperation and a clean environment tbh as long as you take your time and not slap it on too heavy it will be more than a acceptable job.

Yes that's the colour I should have done the titans in for the gul but never mind I was torn between this colour and silver but I went for the contrast and as ypu said there not too dark so should still keep the car nice and bright

Yeah certainly is back up and running 100% hopefully by the weekend or eairly next week we should have it on the road.
Tbh my wife isn't too bothered what she drives so I just get to pick them Donna did want wobblys convertible a month ago but there just not practical for us.

The 240 will be getting done but as and when funds allow doing things like this on the t5's are pretty cheap but building a 16v turbo is stupidly expensive saying that tho ill soon be doing the manual conversion then it's a case of pistons and rods for the red block

There was certainly potential in the car it was just a case of the ammount of work needed if some one had to take it to a garage to be done it would just not be viable due to cost but with being able to do it my self and having a fair few parts my self made it all worth it and now touch wood it should be a good reliable motor for the misses and the kids.
I'm just happy to have been able to restore another one to good spec and with out your fairness I doubt it wouldn't have happend it's much appreciated.

TBF, I think after the Gul, this was going to be a walk in the park, but still great work, and it does help being able to do the work yourself, and a bonus you happen to have some spares on stock. :B_thumb:

True enough, but I have loads of stuff in my garage, whether I'll actually need it or not I've no idea, in fact I still have rakes of Cougar parts, including a spare door and wing, that I'll never use. :slap:

I did have a garage full of spares but had a big clear out when I thought my 400-series days were over...2 months later & now have a 440 & a 480 again....:) that reminds me I recently emptied out my ma & da's garge also and threw out some Renault 5 Campus front wings that had sat in the rafters for almost 20 years......might've come in handy one day!!
The pics that Pete is showing this thread he could do this as a business....if only he reduced the quality of his work as otherwise he wouldn't be making a profit...! I am firmly in the category of 'all the gear, no idea'...without the gear...

Jobs for tomorrow fit tow bar and electrics, bolt back bumper and fixings, fit exhaust, under seal, get passanger seat working or at least in a decent position while I source a new switch pack, wash, clay, polish,wax and test drive

Hey Adrian it's a power flow exhaust I bought a while ago only 2.5" but it will do for the S70r.
I'll be coming in the s70 as got to bring a trailer now we've got rid of the estates not a very wise move lol cost me 680 for trailer 400 new tent 220 tent awning and all camping gear who said campin was cheap

Finally got round to sorting most of the final issues.
Fitted a new rear abs loom as the rear right was still coming up with a code eluminating the abs light so that cured that.
But now the pedal is grinding below 10mph which feels to be from the passanger side as this was problematic while I had all the issues so I'm assuming it's the ring which will be replaced that and that's the only thing left that hasn't been renewed.
Also when braking the car was pulling to the right badly so a quick Inspection showed the bushes on the n/r side were absolutely shot.
And as usual nothing is ever straight forward with this car some one had bodged a threaded bar through one of the mounting points instead of a bolt that should be there, so engine jacked up and new bolts installed.
Going to put a new ring on tomorrow and that should see all of the jobs done on the s70 and every thing will all be back to standard spec.

Front abs issue all sorted ide fitted a used hub witch all ready had a sensor in but upon inspection today it wasn't seated correctly finally a nice and easy fix.
Fingers crossed that's all the jobs done also got the passanger seat fully working
