I was nosing around the engine bay and found a loose plastic scoop between the right hand side of the radiator and the outside world... It seemed to be scoop shaped and dangling after a single rubber style fixing to the plastic radiator cover had deteriorated.
After a bit of ancient thread research this appears to be a 'restrictive' snow scoop, I reattached by pushing into place and now notice a little more intake whistle when accelerating, which may be a coincidence as I also changed the 2 easy to change BCS vacuum pipes at the same time. No discernible performance change from the scoop part.
My questions are -
1. Do I need this plastic scoop in the UK?
2. Is the plastic scoop restricting my intake air?
3. Has anyone made any minor modifications to this scoop/inlet that are proven to help performance?
I am keeping my T5 stock looking, it has a replacement new ITG filter element in so don't want to start a discussion on cone filter, box drilling, just after any good info on this very front part of the air intake system.
Thanks in advance :)

1-No
2-Maybe very slightly
3-Not that I've heard
:)

Thanks - As it easily pulls off, I think I might 'mothball it' and see if the slight whistle goes away...

You'll be amazed at what you can 'Mothball' on these cars and still have them running really well, they're very over engineered.

My 850 T5 is missing this, looks like some models have a straight scoop like the following so I'm going to pick one up next time in a breakers..

Max - The picture isn't working for me, I'd like to see how it compares with the one I have fitted...

Yes, that works (so does the original one for me now), must have been the work network security playing up.
That straight scoop is definitely different to the one on mine. My 850 has a scoop that is angled diagonally down from the top right of the radiator grill.

Mine has nothing, but I'll be looking for the one above as opposed to the angled one :)

I should have one of those pictured if someone needs one?

Yes please! I need loads of V70 bits!

Its a cold air feed pipe and they've probably angled the front part to prevent large objects from going straight in at high speed. Cold fresh air is much more favourable to performance than the slight restriction it may cause.

According to the manual its a 'Splash Guard'
Interesting that it says to use the air intake from NA cars. Makes me wonder how different the turbo one was to the NA one.

I'd guess a turbo's one is a bit longer so would get in the way of the 'splash guard'?

Had a look at the part diagram.
Looks like part 15 was the turbo one. Odd shape

16 is the turbo one.
13 is the NA one.
15 is the extra weird bit that people want to replace? It fits on 13 but not 16 ;)
All my cars have had part 16?
Post 775854 by Dangerous Dave on 2015-06-13 23:20:13
I think 16 is the NA one, hence the need to put the NA one on when the snow/splash/leprechaun guard was fitted
I dunno #confused

I'm confused too now!
My car has part 16 just like in the photos Max posted earlier in the thread. So did my V70 R?

I'm guessing it was made a standard part in the x70 range, can't find a date for when it was introduced. Suppose it is like the reverse intercooler piping found on the early 850s, they just rerouted and made it standard
Post 775859 by Rnash2002 on 2015-06-14 08:15:05
I had a 15 on a early 850 t5

Number 15 is the earliest type followed by 13 and then onto 16 which is from 1996 850 onwards right up to 1999 then the ME7 is completely different.
Turbo or non-turbo didn`t come into it neither did which country the motor was used in just simply a replacement design all the way through.
Number 16 shape for a 1997 V70 is a different part number 9155878 than 16 for the 850 range 1397877 although exactly the same shape as the 850 marque was completely revamped.

My Feb 1996 T5 has part 15, the differences seem all a bit strange, it's so quick and easy to clip on I wonder if anyone would see any noticeable differences on a RR back to back test?
