Fitted a Ramair cone to my R today, but are you supposed to oil these or not? The foam should catch any bits without the need for oil is my thinking, but what do others do please?

No oil, or at least that's the general rule with cotton gauze filters. General thinking is that if any oil gets sucked through, it mullers the MAF.

Absolutely agree with the oil damaging MAF sensor.

Fit a cotton gauze filter, rather than a bathroom sponge. ;)
Fit a cotton gauze filter, rather than a bathroom sponge. ;)
My opportunity to bore you stiff, as the Foamman this is my area of expertize. The foam for these Ramair and similar filters is a reticulated PU foam, more akin to your fish pond/tank filter foam, but the 'fish' foam has nasties removed from it and they colour it green'ish. The retic foam has the cell windows physically blasted out to make a more open cell structure and better for filtration applications compared to non retic foams like you're sat on in your sofa or washing your pans with. Your bathroom sponge should be sea sponge pore PU foam which is a similar animal, but different. God, my foam knowledge is so bloody boring.............
