Why are nice cars always miles away?

Just once when looking for cars, i wish i could one closer than 80 miles (radius) away.
Found a nice car, but its in Hounslow near Heathrow. I know you should be prepared to travel to find a rare car, but i'm just getting fed up with going to look at so called mint cars, and finding out there not. Its not so bad if your only travelling 50 miles, but having to travel over 100 miles and then finding out their definition of excellent condition is different from mine, does get annoying.

It certainly does get tiresome.
Even worse is when you buy something but then the car you want pops up around the corner from you!

Thats not so much the problem (but is helpful). Its simply going to look at a car thats described as excellent, when often its not.

There's always something that the seller misses...& of course one man's 'immaculate' is another man's 'rough as feck'
If I can't get to the car & it is worth a bit, I've used MVI inspections to check cars out. Not the same as going there yourself but they were pretty thorough for a lower price than AA/RAC

The two don't go hand in hand, you may not be missing much :nono:
I went all the way to Liverpool to find out I'd been lied to, infact it was such a long trek I'd have bought it had it been 50% as described, it wasn't even 20% and the guy knew I was coming a long way, so made sure his poor old Dad was left to do the viewing. So many liars out there I'll never travel that far again.

Always need to travel for a good car mate... I've never picked up a decent one less than 100 miles away.
Pay me to trailer it and I'll collect it for you :B_thumb:

I think I found the trick, it is to buy the cars that are listed as complete jalopies, then you can't be disappointed.
'Mint' cars never are!

See if there's a member nearby that could have a look for you. I had a look at a S60R for Kingsford last year as it was local to me, and I know a bit about S60Rs lol, anyway the car was a complete dog, so saved him a wasted journey. Having said that, we did a 250 mile round trip to get the S60R, a 300 mile round trip for the C70, and a 420 mile round trip for the V70R.

Shiply take quite a big deposit that the transporter doesn't see, so if you deal direct it can be a bit cheaper. I've paid about 65 quid to get a car from Middlesbrough to Newcastle, and more than double that for longer journeys e.g. Glasgow to Newcastle.

I think my longest journeys were for two 400-series from within the M25 back up to Durham - a 460 and a 480 (on two separate occasions). Oh and a Renault 5 from Hereford.

The cars i tend to like are not that common, and some i just plain rare now, so i have to be prepared to travel.

Got a plane from Bournemouth to Aberdeen without seeing the car, then drove it back down South the same day.

Just seen this Liam, I'm only a few miles away and could pop over on the way home if it helps, as you know I have no real mechanical knowledge but can tell a dog when I see one, could give it the once over and take a few pics if it helps.

I would like to thank Graham and Richard for offering to look at the car for me, and Emlyn for the offer of transportation. Alas, it seems someone has put a deposit down on it, but nevermind.
P.S Keep it quiet about what car it was...............i like to play the "guess what car i've bought" game ;)

I did 480 miles round trip for the Gul and used shiply for the olive (and many other times) it worked out cheap £100 from Nottingham to Portsmouth. Sometimes people will just do a cheap price to cover fuel to get to next job or similar.

I will call him again in the morning to see if the car has definitely sold :B_thumb:

Obviously it's dangerous if he wanted someone to look at an M3, and they didn't know the boot floor was made of cardboard, but, for normal cars, they could give an opinion, then Liam could decide whether it was worth the journey. ;)

You think you've got it bad, be grateful you don't live in Scotland! Since I moved back here, I've always found when trawling Autotrader, PH etc that there's rarely much interesting metal available locally. I bought my V70 not because I was after a V70 per-se, but because it was the only half decent thing available locally at the time. Hence ending up with the worst possible colour combination!
But like you Liam, I prefer more unusual cars, and that means travel. I've been thinking recently that when the V70 has run it's course I'm going to move on to more expensive stuff - V8s, V10s, V12s - and try to change cars every few months if I can. Basically I want to start ticking stuff off of the bucket list. I fully expect to have to do a lot of travel for that though.

Just to revive this one
http://www.transrec.co.uk/index.html
this guy does about 1 quid* per mile, less if he can combine jobs.
I was just posting for comparison but if anyone does consider using them please note he does have a limit of about 1500 kg, so might be no good for the newer stuff. Fine for my feather light S70
