Turbo rebuilding who or how to?

Rebuilding a turbo looks like a simple bit of plumbing and adjusting. I see many do it on a table top at home without balancing, but it's one job I've never done, so anyone done a how to (some blue printing measurements etc) or offering to rebuild 2x 18T turbos for me??

There is a good guide on voc for td04 turbos make sure you mark every thing and make sure all the marks line up once rebuilt if you don't want to have it balanced personally I always have them balanced but that's just me

Thanks, who do you use for the balancing?

I just take them to AET to have them balanced

There's a place in Preston Wayne that I used to get mine rebuilt when the rebuild kit I bought online wouldn't fit correctly. They rebuilt it and balanced it for me for about £120 all in. Think they're called Turbo Force or something like that.

Merc85 rebuilt his 18t and by himself as far as I know and was pushing 300bhp

I have a few of these here, must have at least 6 of various sizes,i always fancied my hand at rebuilding them, but the balancing kind of put me off.
I was recommended these guys and had no problems: Image
Always thought turbo rebuilds would be much more than that..

Costs more than I paid for my K24. I'll be rebuilding the k24 soon and will be doing a how-to of some kind.

Post 780129 by Ettienne on 2015-08-03 10:16:41

I rebuilt a couple of mine td04's but not k24's

Post 780131 by ExternalError on 2015-08-03 10:38:16

arnt k24s a bit more complex because of the Variable Vanes

Post 780134 by martin_r_smith on 2015-08-03 11:09:33

Do they have variable vanes?

Post 780135 by M-R-P on 2015-08-03 11:11:24
Do they have variable vanes?
Not that I'm aware of.

Post 780138 by Ettienne on 2015-08-03 11:21:25

No they don't have variable vanes

Post 780139 by ExternalError on 2015-08-03 11:23:49

my mistake

Post 780140 by martin_r_smith on 2015-08-03 11:24:05

Didn't think they did.

What the deal with the different compressor wheels? 6x6 vane 11 vane 12 vane ...???

Post 794302 by mike 850 on 2016-01-03 07:41:13

It's to do with flow, I think it's 6 for quicker spool, 11 for higher top end flow, not seen 12...

Aren't the cores you buy already balanced

Thought on porting the Turbo exhaust housing and exhaust manifold before reassembly?

Post 797542 by MoleT-5R on 2016-03-01 01:46:11
Thought on porting the Turbo exhaust housing and exhaust manifold before reassembly?
been looking at the angled flange I have here, but don't want to open it up, as I worry this could effect the way the gases reach the turbine wheel. but I'm all for a bit of smoothing and polishing to cut down on any turbulence on the way to the turbine that could in any way possibly restrict the exhaust gas flow.
Thought on porting the Turbo exhaust housing and exhaust manifold before reassembly?
Turbo Rebuild will say its not worth it, the gains are too small.

Post 797577 by MoleT-5R on 2016-03-01 23:43:57
Turbo Rebuild will say its not worth it, the gains are too small.
shirley a gain is a gain.....lol, but to small for them to charge for possibly, still looking at it, but I wouldn't spend too much time on it.

My thoughts at that there is a ridge like a humped back whale that can be taken out of the way. Also another (yes I've been watching Americans on YouTube) is to open the waste gate hole a bit.. Just found a s/hand die grinder a eBay... So I'm going to give it a go. Watch this space (probably for tears)..... Also I'm limited to ~1.1bar due to my boost limit at the moment, so need to maximise flow where possible.
