Epic trip!

Post 785251 by kmb on 2015-09-09 09:23:21

It was a fantastic experience, which I might repeat somewhere else next year - My buddy and I made sure it wasn't too epic by staying in top hotels, the luxury at the end of the day was more than welcome! The photo of me taking brekkie by the pool is one of them, not bad for €40 a night with personal waiter service

I would love to do something like that BUT unfortunately wouldn't have the off road skills :(

That looks amazing!
I would love to do something like that BUT unfortunately wouldn't have the off road skills :(
I hadn't ridden a bike for over 12 years, it was a bit worrying at first as my last bikes were sports road bikes GSXR600 etc although I did use to ride enduro as a teen, but hadn't attempted anything like this... my buddy was also a novice but picked things up well, although he did drop his bike 4 times (no damage) I luckily escaped with nothing worse than getting stuck a few times as shown in the above pic :) There was a bit of a panic on the return leg to the airport in Marrakech, we needed to average 60km/h for 3h off road on tiny dirt tracks with a sheer drop, somehow we managed it but there was some real sliding around and squirming... mainly from my buttocks, when cornering on the loose stuff!

My mate is a pilot and did a good job of the GPS co-ordinates and tracking, he put it onto Google Map as shown below: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zqbnKrchC2p0.k7FrKQnOaDqU&usp=sharing Quite good as you can zoom in on actual satellite imagery... if you're interested

looks an awesome trip, love the google map stuff tying all the trip memories together and super holiday pics, thanks for sharing them, been wanting to go to morocco for years and that's just making me want to go even more now, might look at it for a road trip next year and include a visit to the brother-in-laws in gibraltar

Post 785291 by kmb on 2015-09-09 14:16:07

I'd say go for it - I managed to get return flights from Lyon for €55 total, bike hire for BMW GS650 was around €70/day, hotels and food are cheap once there, so cost is not really a limiting factor :) Although if you're driving from UK... that's quite some road trip!

What an awesome mini trip! Did you speak/meet many locals on your trip?
looks an awesome trip, love the google map stuff tying all the trip memories together and super holiday pics, thanks for sharing them, been wanting to go to morocco for years and that's just making me want to go even more now, might look at it for a road trip next year and include a visit to the brother-in-laws in gibraltar
Would you take your own car there? Definitely be interested in how you get on, pretty hardcore doing a solo (single car) trip to Morocco trip!
What an awesome mini trip! Did you speak/meet many locals on your trip?
Plenty of local contact, everyone very friendly and helpful! Being a French speaker to some degree is a great help as English is much less common. Although I'm sure most of the roads/tracks/offroad I used are not suitable for normal cars.

Post 785295 by kmb on 2015-09-09 14:42:32

Forgot to mention... Also got stopped in a Moroccon speed trap, radar read 93km/h in a 60km/h limit ooops! The policeman asked if we were tourists and was very friendly (to the point of telling us a further radar trap was operating in the next village), I made a joke about speaking French like a Spanish cow which cracked him up and he chatted for a bit, then waved us on with no fine :)

Looks an epic trip, I've travelled all around Egypt on and off to 3 months, which I enjoyed but not by motorbike. Something it remember forever

Post 785320 by Nealevo on 2015-09-09 19:44:11

I worked out there for 12 weeks in 2011, loved the scenery and culture, the atlas are a lovely place, we had some snow over oct/nov so it went from 40 degrees on the desserts to minus 15 all within a few hours of travel

Daft question for Kmb...did you also rent the gear - helmet, clothes etc..?

Post 785338 by Harvey on 2015-09-09 21:32:29

What a great way to see the place ,can't call it a road trip due to the lack of roads. Great photos you have.

Brilliant,very nice views indeed.
Daft question for Kmb...did you also rent the gear - helmet, clothes etc..?
I went in jacket and biker jeans/boots with just a back pack (inc the gloves and goggles), the crash helmet was included in the bike hire. Loc2roues was the bike hire company, nothing short of excellent, they spent 1.5h talking us through some good sights to see and helping with some route planning waypoints.

Post 785346 by Doingitsideways on 2015-09-09 22:35:00

That sounds awesome :) Would it be inappropriate to ask what sort of money it cost?

Post 785357 by kmb on 2015-09-09 23:22:34

Not at all buddy, costs were as previously mentioned :)
I'd say go for it - I managed to get return flights from Lyon for €55 total, bike hire for BMW GS650 was around €70/day, hotels and food are cheap once there, so cost is not really a limiting factor :) Although if you're driving from UK... that's quite some road trip!

It was a fantastic experience, which I might repeat somewhere else next year - My buddy and I made sure it wasn't too epic by staying in top hotels, the luxury at the end of the day was more than welcome!
Looks well worth the money :) Now, best get my bike licence I suppose!
I was trying to recruit people in the bar last night for a trip like this :) ;)

Post 785384 by kmb on 2015-09-10 08:10:44

Funnily enough this entire trip (and the flights to kick it off) were booked at the table in a bar, it's where the greatest things are planned!

At the risk of boring you all on this topic... My mate just edited and stuck a Go-Pro video on Youtube, if watched in HD then it really shows the colours and a good feeling for the variety of terrain we covered: www.youtube.com/watch?v=iApE0yMNRX4

Feel free to crash it  Love the view from the tent door, I originally thought that was from a window on a plane! Looks very idyllic for the beach part too.
Feel free to crash it  Love the view from the tent door, I originally thought that was from a window on a plane! Looks very idyllic for the beach part too.
it was very very nice. Kilimanjaro was 7 days of pain but a good experience, the beach is on Zanzibar (got a ferry across from Dar es Salaam). Kite surfing is hard work I kept falling off. Useless fact: Freddie Mercury was born on Zanzibar; fortunately I had an appropriate t-shirt ready Sunset from Mercury's bar in Stone Town
