2015 Christmas Do Discussion
Posts
Post 787575 by Santa on 2015-10-05 07:33:49
Hi Guys,
Just figuring out the potential interest, preferred locations and dates for a Xmas do. Previous year locations have worked out to be:
2012 - West Midlands
2013 - South Midlands
2014 - West Midlands ish (Well Warwickshire)
And those locations are usually the result of much discussion and usually doesn't satisfy all. So in an attempt to satisfy more people than before:
If you are interested in a potential Xmas do this year, could you please indicate your preference and willingness to the following options:
Location:
1. Southeast-ish, probably West to South of London.
2. Southwest-ish, probably around Bristol
3. West Midlands ish, as wide as Telford to Northampton and as long as Telford to Stratford upon Avon ish.
4. North East ish, I say ish because I'm only thinking as far north as Thirsk and as south as Sheffield ish, west as Leeds, East as Scunthorpe
5. North-West ish, I say ish because I'm thinking as far north as Lancaster and as south as Manchester, west as Liverpool, East as Rochdale.
6. Somewhere else - State.
Dates:
1. 28th November
2. 5th December
3. 12th December
4. 19th December
Format of reply:
Please do replies in the following example format:
Location Preference : 1
Location Willing : 2, 3, 4, 6 - South Central.
Dates Preference : 2
Dates Willing : 1, 4
With the above, we will hopefully come up with a solution which suits the most.
Also, anyone wanting to run an unofficial VPCUK Xmas do is very welcome to, just please let me know first and post in the community organised meets. (Helps people decide whether there is a need for a Site Organised one and choose dates etc. Relaxing the rules slightly, this can entail the collection of deposits to a token amount no greater than £5, community only, no external organised events to be posted other than a permitted "link to" after authorisation from the admin team which will be excluded from deposit collection on this site :) ).

As it's still October I don't tend to think about Christmas. My Birthday first and then I do Christmas.......
Location Preference: 3 (it's only fair to move it further up North as previously discussed)
Location Willing : 1 , 2 , 5
Date Preference: 3 (it's the 2nd Saturday in December and the one I try to organise the do on every year)
Date Willing : 2 (any later than 3 or 2 people are tied up in family xmas things)

Just indicate your preference rather than whats fair :P (It's the only way to ensure fair representation if everyone answers from their own point of view).

OK guys, so if my maths are correct the 12th is by far the most popular date followed by the 5th then the 28th.
Locations, the Midlands is by far the most popular, North east 2nd.
Soooooooooooooo how does 12th December in Birmingham sound? (Sorry Jim, the 28th November didn't come out too popular).
Post 789882 by jamesy12345 on 2015-11-02 14:56:16
 bloody southerners
Is it not a tie?
External, Moose, Jim, Stribo - 3. West Midlands ish,
Pete, Jdavis, jamesy, Pin up gal - 4. North East ish

Worked out by assigning 2 points to every preference and 1 point to every willing (excluding those where willing was the same as preference).
Pinup Gal changed her preference but hasn't updated on here lol.

fair do's...everyone who put NE as a preference was also willing to travel to the midlands, in their second choices....but a couple of the guys who put the midlands as preference are not able to make it to the north east. So is only sensible to choose the location with maximum number of ppl to attend as you said
If the date ends up as 12th I'll be there, although can't make it on the 28th sadly

I was on this today Stew. I hadn't seen that one tho. I'll gather a few together and work out what's best like. We've not done Brum centre so it might just be an idea :)

That is the reason the maths worked out that way :) but the Midlands is probably good for the majority of people :)

I'm easy me tbh, & don't know birmingham so anywhere would be new for me, some ideas here though:
'The Electric Cinema'
https://www.theelectric.co.uk/
"...UK's Oldest Working Cinema"
Karting
http://www.teamworkskarting.com/track_location/birmingham/
Gas Street Basin area
http://www.walkingbritain.co.uk/walks/walks/walk_b/2203/
http://www.gasstreetsocial.co.uk/
"At the heart of Birmingham, the intersection of several canals provides a beautiful place for a walk, a boat ride or an evening at the restaurants and bars. Don't forget that Birmingham has more miles of canals than Venice! This place, once a thriving port area, will enchant you day and night."
Seems there is some half-decent graffiti in around Digbeth for a backdrop to any group photos (not sure if that is a recent street view shot..!)

The 'Jamie's Italians' that I've been to have been pretty good...

Right here is where we are at ...
12th December
Birmingham
Those that can make it in the day arrange a time and rendezvous point to take in Birmingham's cultural German Market. Much gluhwein and steiners of beer may be drunk.
There is now a choice for the evening. We can go tried and tested with the usual hotel/pub combi and book the christmas dinner we usually have. Or we can still go with the same type of hotel but opt for dinner at TGI Fridays (or there is an indian close by).
Those of you that are interested can you please state your preference on meal
a) christmas meal
b) Tgi
c) indian
I will be ringing Wednesday to book numbers then will be taking deposits . From Wednesday I will put up the full details etc
We need a minimum of 8-10 people for this to go ahead.
:)

Doubt we'd get in to Lassan's going on past experience. But there are plenty in brum to go to so that shouldn't be an issue.
Gin Parlour looks ace. I've not had a gin hangover in a long while lol

I vote cheap & cheerful
Are we drinking & sleeping in separate places, I usually find this more cost effective :)...meaning meal in hotel can be expensive & not necessarily very good

There's a good curry house in Balsall Heath called the Diwan. The foods good and you can park on the office car park (unless they've stopped it) 100 yrs away
http://diwanbalti-moseley.co.uk//
Sadly I can't make but I'd recommend this place

Hotel information
Premier Inn on Broad Street
Travel Lodge on Broad Street
Basically any hotel on Broad Street is going to be your best bet. Check for ones that have parking though :) There are secure 24 hour car parks if you don't succeed.
I'm waiting to hear back with some solid details on the food venue but it sounds rather nice!!

Good luck with finding a hotel, nearest I found was 3.6 miles away, and cost £140 for the night , all the nearby ones are booked up.

Theres that one right in Birmingham city centre
The issue is the Christmas market brings tons of tourists into Birmingham this time of year combine that with company Christmas parties block booking rooms for staff it puts the prices up this time of year

I found that - either booked up or more than I would like to pay for one night (as a tight £££££££), so trying AirBnB
//edit
not much luck on AirBnB either

Just a thought, as there are local people going, how about a hotel near one of them and share taxi/car ride?

Sorted Premier Inn on Broad Street
http://www.premierinn.com/gb/en/hotels/england/west-midlands/birmingham/birmingham-broad-street-brindley-place.html?cid=GLBC_BIRPTI
Parking is available at 36-37 Sheepcote Street at 8GBP per 24hours or Qpark at Brindley Place at 16GBP per 24 hours.
or SIP car park is 2.5 quid for 24 hours at B1 1SJ, according to that parking website above. Don't leave your Ferrari there though

So your t shirt helped you remember what pub you were in ;), your key card was the only way you knew what hotel you were in and then thankfully they had logo'd duvets lol

safety first!! I don't know if I mentioned it but when I arrived I forgot the name of the hotel & spent a while wandering up and down Broad Street, even before alcohol, eventually taking refuge in O'Neill's to drink Guinness in exchange for using their wifi...a fair swap....O'Neill is my surname too although the bar maid didn't feel this was a good reason for a discount :)

I may have had rather a lot to drink but strangely enough I remember it all.
I was most amused walking back with Stewart and Rich getting them to stop so I could watch two girls go at a bouncer. Made me giggle somewhat!
I also told some lads their Mum's must be so proud of them pmsl.
We also managed to pick up a randomer on the way back that Stewart had to shove in a cab lol

It was certainly a busy area, lots going on. Would have been nice to get there earlier & have a walk around but as above the traffic or rather weather on the way down was madness

The ones in Manchester give you more "Columbian" alternatives if you use the secret handshake/fistbump.
"Columbian" because it's probably never seen Columbia.

yep I picked up a stray poor sod was too far gone to find his way home, I stuck him in a taxi and sent him on his way, charitable deed for the year done I expect something good in my sack from santa this year.
Overall a good night food was lovely as was the company. Nice to meet James for the 1st time and nice to see all the regular faces again. I'm up for the north next year too just not Scotland north.
