Evening everyone, Following a previous thread of mine I have finally purchased a volvo!! Happy as Larry (whoever he is) I have myself a 2009 v70 with little over 128k on the clock. One thing I'm looking at changing is the standard 5 spoke volvo alloys as anyone had any experience with ex police cars as if I believe correctly the discs are bigger and more pronounced. If so does anyone know what sizes I need to be looking at? T.I.A Craig

It's debadged in that respect. Insurance comes up with 185 brake. Although my girlfriend''s dad is a officer and as far as he's aware it's 'illegal' to sell on a police car with police remap in it.

The car is a dream to drive. Just a problem that it's a bit thirstier than anticipated but today's the day I get it in a rolling road and find out just how much the supposed 185hp car actually has

Post 788947 by dionbullock on 2015-10-20 09:56:10

Good choice! I bought en ex plod D5 from expolicar.co.uk last year, an early 2009 model so still only the 185 single turbo. My budget couldnt stretch to the newer twin turbos! Dont get your hopes up with the MPG, I get about 32-35mpg average. low 40's on a motorway run. While the Mrs P2 D5 hits 50mpg on a motorway!

Post 788948 by craig1992 on 2015-10-20 10:36:20

That's where I got this from haha and yeah went down to Birmingham last night and averaged 35 on a42 :/

Post 788949 by craig1992 on 2015-10-20 10:43:32

Another think I noticed about the single turbo is that because it doesn't have the colour coded skirts and dual exit exhaust people tend to overlook it and think it's a older fella at the wheel pottering around whereas with me (23 yr's old) behind the wheel people don't expect it to take of as it does! Only problem is that if your pulling off sharpishly out of a junction/side road you don't have any power till you get to 2k rpm

Post 788951 by craig1992 on 2015-10-20 12:24:23

Right so just had the v70 2.4l d5 185bhp on the the rolling road and apparently is producing 215 and 159 at flywheel. I tried to upload a pic but the website always seem's to fail. So and advice what can be done next to increase everything that isn't stupidly expensive? Or any general ideas to make car look better?

Post 788955 by kmb on 2015-10-20 13:08:23

Don't understand your numbers - Do you mean 159 bhp at the wheels and 215 bhp calculated at the fly?

Post 788959 by craig1992 on 2015-10-20 13:29:14

At the top of sheet says maximum 215 (159)bhp @3503 rpm Think it's producing 215 overall and 159 at the flywheel

Post 788961 by jamesy12345 on 2015-10-20 13:53:58
At the top of sheet says maximum 215 (159)bhp @3503 rpm Think it's producing 215 overall and 159 at the flywheel
Something not right there mate - if your car is a 185 that is the approx amount of hp at the crank, with less power at the wheels. 159 sounds about right for wheel hp from 185 at the crank though

Post 788962 by Blackdog on 2015-10-20 13:54:57
At the top of sheet says maximum 215 (159)bhp @3503 rpm Think it's producing 215 overall and 159 at the flywheel
The higher figure would be at the flywheel. You then loose power through the transmission and end up with a "wheel horse power" figure.

Post 788965 by craig1992 on 2015-10-20 14:20:13

Apparently it still has the police mapping in to be producing that

Post 788984 by dionbullock on 2015-10-20 16:41:36

Would be interesting to see what bhp my ex plod P3 D5 is?! I'd like to imagine its still 185 as it doesnt feel that quick, but isnt slow either! I'd like to think that a remap would unleash more potential, 205-215bhp at the least! For all I know, it could still have "police spec" mapping or whatever, be running 200ish bhp with no option of mapping it again to make it quicker!

Post 788985 by jamesy12345 on 2015-10-20 18:09:24

Here's a calculator to get from whp to crank that I've seen used on this forum... http://www.mk5cortinaestate.co.uk/calculator4.php 185 at the crank through a manual box, FWD gives 157 at wheels. Pretty close to 159 measured (if that is what it was)

Post 789012 by craig1992 on 2015-10-20 23:36:26

Is there any way to increase the other numbers such as the 159 etc? To get more power on the road that the engine actually produces?

Post 789013 by Doingitsideways on 2015-10-20 23:39:32
Is there any way to increase the other numbers such as the 159 etc? To get more power on the road that the engine actually produces?
So you want to put more power down than the engine makes? Erm... Flux capacitor, maybe? The power you put down on the road will ALWAYS be less than is made by the engine, due to the mechanical drag from the gearbox, etc. Imagine turning a load of cogs joined together in a long row. It will take a certain amount of effort (power) to make them all turn, this is basically mechanical drag. The same thing happens with the gearbox, differential, driveshafts, etc of a car. It takes some of the engine's power to move it all. If you want to put more power down, make your engine develop more. Simple :) If you, say, made an extra 50hp at the crank (flywheel), then you'd probably put about 45 (very rough guess) of that down, although it does get quite complicated working it out like that.

Post 789015 by craig1992 on 2015-10-21 00:05:14

Thanks, I was just curious of getting a better percentage down if you get me. Your last paragraph sums it up. Considering it already has a police remap is there any other ways to increase power except taking the dpf off etc or anything with a massive price tag

Post 789017 by Doingitsideways on 2015-10-21 00:30:34

Not really, Fella. Unfortunately, a remap is the first port of call. Any mods after that are either expensive as hell, or not really worth the bother. Newer diesels aren't really my thing though, so I could be wrong. Example on a T5: Remap: £300ish. Stainless cat back exhaust: £400ish Stainless downpipe: probably £200 200 cell cat: £lots Bigger turbo £lots more Then it would all need mapping again to suit. Custom mapping is expensive, off the shelf maps are configured for everything else being standard.

Post 789019 by jamesy12345 on 2015-10-21 07:56:42
Is there any way to increase the other numbers such as the 159 etc? To get more power on the road that the engine actually produces?
As Steve says the only way to increase the wheel hp is to increase the crank hp first! Unless you change the transmission set up for a more efficient one!! For example auto to manual swap. If you have a go with that calculator above, from crank to wheel, manual boxes waste about 15% & autos about 20% of the available power If my car were making stock power at the wheels & there was no evidence (paperwork) for a map then I would assume it hasn't been mapped yet. If the dyno operator is telling you your car has 215 crank hp and 159 at the wheels then personally I think he is telling porkies. That is a 26% loss. No worries though that means there is a bit of scope for fiddling, meaning that you can enjoy the car even more

Post 789027 by craig1992 on 2015-10-21 09:46:41

So what's the best way to find out what the actual hp is? Retest on different dyno?

Post 789056 by jamesy12345 on 2015-10-21 20:58:03
So what's the best way to find out what the actual hp is? Retest on different dyno?
up to you mate but that costs money. If you are sure it has been mapped & want to spend the cash then go for it. Personally I would try not to get hung up on numbers & just worry about whether I enjoyed the drive (easy to say I know)

Post 789076 by Doingitsideways on 2015-10-22 00:50:35

Aye, the best way to avoid pub bragging rights is to stay out of the pub! ;) Personally, I don't know for sure what any of mine are kicking out. I know ballpark figures from my bum cheek dyno, and I enjoy driving them. That's good enough for me :)

Post 789078 by craig1992 on 2015-10-22 08:04:46

Yes I can safely say I love driving it. I just need to get fuel up a bit so I've stopped booting it at every green light.... unless there's a chav in an a3 or golf thinking they own the road, otherwise it's 6th everywhere at steady speed seen a rise from 31 to 38 due to being that little more typical volvo driver haha. Still can't get over the looks when I'm in traffic or get out in carpark. 23 going on 73 haha
