hello everyone my name is gary and im from a town in suffolk called ipswich. My brother is a volvo technician that works in the main dealership inn Colchester and keeps banging on about how i should give up on fords and make the move to volvo. Iv always liked my cars and was looking at getting the focus st but talking to the brother he told me that it has the same lump in it as the t5 volvo yet in a better car (not a ford lol) I have given in and im going to look at a volvo s40 t5 on a 55plate with 125k miles on the clock wit a manual box.... my question is what would a good condition car like that be worth and is there anything common on these to watch/look out for? i know my brother will help me but i want to go look at it with him with some sort of an idea :) thank you for reading this and thank you in advance if you post. oh yeah if i do get a t5 is there any meets that take place around the suffolk area? thank you people :)

hello, and welcome to the club, as far as I know, the only real week spot is the liners if you start on upping the power.

Hello and welcome!

Welcome. I used to be a ford boy, a Vauxhall boy, a jap boy & a dubber. I have had all sorts. Although I keep trying different cars I always come back. Volvo for life.

I doubt it, the s40 is a nice car & 125k is nothing for a t5. Check s/h & be prepared for the liners to be changed if you tune it. 300bhp is easily achieved. Badges off, total sleeper.

love that fact it would be a total sleeper

I had a v70 on coilovers, R everything with tints & people were still surprised when I left them for dead. My latest Volvo wouldn't leave anything for dead but I'm still very happy with the build quality.

Welcome to the forum, we made the same move, from Ford to Volvo, bought a S60R, and never looked back, now own 4 Volvo's, this lot are a bad influence. ;)

Hi Gary BEST MOVE you ever made! I owned an XR3i years ago WORST car I ever had, so tried once - never again! I still see the Ford owners in my road on cold days unsuccesfully cranking their engines trying to start in frost/ snow. Bought a V70 T5 turn the key and away every day! Very helpful crew on here great peeps!:B_thumb:

Aye, I moved from Ford to Volvo years ago. Had an array of fast Fords, still have my Capri... Just about. I had a look at a Focus ST when they first came out, but ended up buying my first 850 instead and apart from a brief stray into 4x4 crapness with a Shogun, have never looked back :)

Cheers people. Can't wait to look at the Volvo now. Can't really find bad reports on them at all. :) that's a good thing.

I've own an S40 and I think they are very much one of the best handling cars I've driven. The phase 2 model shares a lot in common with the ford focus :welcome:

I've been thinking about a v50 T5 in the future but one thing that puts me off is the sound, or lack of. 5 pot warble is a major attraction for me, but evwry video I've watched of V50 T5s with both standard and modified exhausts, they sound much more muted with a smoother/creamier note than the earlier T5 and R models. Yet the Focus ST sounds much harder even in stock. Anyone got any views on this? Can tge V50 T5s be made to sound as aggressive, pops and bangs etc, as the earlier T5s or even the Focus? Or is there something inherantly limiting in that engine design that makes it sound much softer?

Isn't the later V50 a 4-pot? Thought the T5 badging was just a trim level now?

Post 790632 by Biff on 2015-11-12 14:49:11

I think the newer v50's are the 2.3 eco boost engine yes so 4 pot. I am sick of the sound of focus st's/rs's as they constantly blat it past my house with the fake fart when they change gear. Give me a 2.3 with a full ferritta anyday. god I miss my 5 pot.

Had an Ford Escort Cosworth once, miss it, but still default to the 5 Cylinder turbo grunt!

And I'm not confusing videos of later V50s either as you can easily tell the difference between a 4 and 5 cylinder sound, but all the ones I've watched they sound much tamer - even with "straight through" setups - than 850s and V70s with similar exhaust setups.
