Suggestions for new car?

Keep thinking about getting another, newer car to run about in because the constant expenditure on the 850 is getting harder and harder to justify, . Problem is i can't think of a realistic car to buy so looking for some suggestions please. Budget is around 10k, must be family car size, 300hp and ideally petrol. Quite like B7 S4's and Jag S-type Rs, however the residuals for the Jag are a concern as is the ability to sell it on in the future.
Would appreciate any suggestions.
Cheers.

Save the money & spend on the 850 :hidesbehi
There are not many cars this good for the cost, both the cars you mention I would not expect to have lower running costs

I seem to have struck a good combo, s60 d5 for a daily and 850 t5 for raw fun, seems to work out ok cost wise plus I can do work on either and not worry about getting to work the next day...

I can't fault my S4 it's quick and it handles very well in all conditions, MPG is a worry as it often in single figures when playing, but I have LPG so not to much of concern. If you can have a test drive as some people don't like the fact they are boring until they look at speedo, build quality is brilliant, watch out for cam chain rattle, as this is many many £ to fix, not to much of a worry on B7 but worth checking. There is a nice B6 on eBay at min with LPG (not mine)
S type jags are great cars too, fugly but good, 400 out of the box and great with a map and pulley change, gearbox is weak link but if it's looked after they car hassle free. Electrical gremlins on early but your budget would eliminate that.
RS6 ??

I have been looking too, vxr8 a bit more money though or s6 5.2 v10 Lamborghini engine £9k upwards

I too was looking for a nice daily the only one that ticked the boxes was the audi v8 that neal has but even tho ide do the timing tensioners my self the cost of parts alone would be unreal.
So we're sticking with the S70r there really isn't anything to replace it.
Nice and smooth plenty of power with a map around 280bhp lsd and cheap as chips to fix
Post 792694 by Ettienne on 2015-12-06 17:47:48
That's the reason I don't go away from Volvo, so cheap to fix even the p2r's
My neighbour has a a6 4.2v8 and everything costs loads to repair.
I did see a a8 w12 6.0 for sale and they are cheap but a lot of car for the money 444 bhp or something similar

Keep thinking of a p2 V70 D5 and then I could reduce my fleet by 2, but the depreciation with my mileage is always a concern.
Pete, is that my map that you're still running in the S70 R?

for 10k..? I assumed (maybe wrongly) that the OP was looking for a daily. A 10K B8 wouldn't last long without a big bill IMO
//////
What about a WRX? That's an almost sensible choice. Or...some daft ones then:
300ZX
Boxster
RX-7
All of which can be had for well under 10k, leaving money spare for the inevitable repairs.
or just to raise the daftness level a notch, a 996 911.
Might be able to get this one for 10k http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201504232863769?search-target=usedcars&radius=1500&page=1&postcode=DH6%203RF&onesearchad=used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew&transmission=manual&model=911_mk_996&sort=default&make=porsche&logcode=p
Last of the cable throttle versions :B_thumb:

Loved my RS6, didn't like the MPG I lived in Germany and would see silly speeds every day

Plenty of powerful saloons and estates for that money, but its doubtful that you'll find a car thats cheaper to run (service costs etc). Newer cars are just so much more complicated that they have more chance of something going wrong and, when it does, it costs more to fix.
If i were going to spend 10k on a family sized that car that was decent on fuel and that isn't fragile, it would be an e60 535d with a remap. If your lucky you may find an e60 535i for similar money but they are rare. On the plus side they do map up to around 370bhp.
Or the e60 550, they sound great and have a really nice V8, but obviously cost a bit more on fuel.

What about sticking with Volvo and getting a P2 V70R,surely fits all criteria.
An 07 plate with low mileage could be had for that budget and can't see depreciation being an issue either

I'd be having a merc like gavs.
Mpg & a good right foot. No worries about rot & if looked after it won't tend to go wrong.
My 2 cents worth. :)

I used to play with one local to me that was standard, he was a big fan of the t5 & I could see the potential. It went well.
My old managing director had one similar but being honest I haven't got a clue on the model. I drove it to prestwich in Scotland a few times & it was a lovely drive.

I really do like S-types, even the looks really do it for me, one thing that concerns me is it seems to take awhile for them to sell and i would like a little more choice too.

Not so cheap when they constantly need work though. This month the car needs rack arms and track rod ends, new piston rod for the front shock, vac hose and non return valve for servo, tracking plus labour on top.. Last month it had tyres all round.. Who knows whats in store next month lol..

Its hard to ignore diesels these days but i find it difficult to get excited about them and she's the same..
Need to call up our insurance provider but if this is anything to go by an S4 could be off the cards for another year at least :( not sure why it would be so expensive, thats x3 more than the Volvo including mods.

Us over 40's take it for granted that Insurance is no longer an issue
Maybe a derv would be a good option as some quick ones may have got under the Insurance radar

Another good reason for an 850! Classic insurance so cheap when you crack 30 yrs old
Post 792870 by merc85 on 2015-12-08 19:15:20
Easy to get excited about a diesel wen it was quicker than my mapped 850r. And achieved 662 miles across Europe non stop in 9hrs 27mins touching speeds of 145+ on a single tank of fuel with a gallon left to spare at the Hoek.
But its not a car to skimp maintenance/servicing on.

She'd be happy with a mk4 xr3i or any RS from the 80s and 90s but not really a practical car.
Our insurance provider wanted an extra £1500 from us to insure an S4, so sadly that's definitely off the cards, expected an increase but that's abit strong.

Post 792878 by Kingsford G on 2015-12-08 20:39:04
If the fuel costs is a problem and u love yr car just fit a good LPG system and driving in europe where gas is under 30C in places will make it up very quick. If you want a change I always wanted an E60 BMW 530 or 535D but with the electrical problems they have changed my mind now.My experience with Mercs is that up to 2005 I6 197-204bhp 320cdi engines are great and when remapped the will surprise you and its comfy and just nice to drive also the maintenance is sensible.Just had a 2005 S320CDI,its a heavy car but what a car,you have to have one to appreciate.I have an E211 320cdi and W211 320CDI at the moment if you fency a drive in.

I've found thats not always the case. Looking at e46 330d's (204bhp), they are quite cheap (for me anyway). But when looking at e60 530ds (218 and 230BHP), they are much more expensive, certainly more than the e39 540 (v8) i'm looking for.
In fact, when i looked, i'm sure the e60 530d was only £50 cheaper than an s-type R. The 535d was actually more than the 545 petrol v8.
Just something to look out for, don't assume anything when it comes to insurance.
