Daughters first car questions

Evening all. Today took my daughter out and put a deposit down on her first car. I'm collecting it next week, my questions are, Daughter doesn't turn 17 till next February, so how do I go about picking the car up next week and driving it home. It will have a new mot on it, but obviously no tax or insurance. Once it's home it will be left on our driveway until February. Do I need to take out insurance for a day, tax for day etc? Mike

I'm certain you can insure the car for just a day but you'd have to tax it for a minimum of a month. Would the place you bought it from arrange delivery?

If you have ability to drive any vehicle on insurance (3rd party) you can possibly drive it home as long as the new car will not be in your name, chance the no tax issue. This is what my insurance told me when I went to collect my dads new car last month.

i would ask them if they would deliver it or you find a local company to do it.

Thanks for the replies. The car is 40 miles away so an 80 mile round trip for the seller, so can't see that being a cheap option for him. I'm going to put my daughters name on the log book, so could then drive it as third party on my own cars policy. It's mainly the tax I'm confused about.

i'm sure the car will have to be insured for you to use your third party insurance.my brother got his car deliverd for £95 and that was a 90 mile round trip for the delivery company.

An 80 mile round trip for a car dealer is nothing tbh after they have made the sale....don't be shy to ask that you would like the car to be delivered, if they value your custom and future custom they'll deliver it no problems. I delivered a car from Blackpool to Ruislip a few years back.....480 mile round trip and I'd do it again no issue

The route I'm going is, 1, adding the car to my fully comp insurance policy on the M, being charge £15 per day 2, taxing the car online using the v5 log book number which means it's taxed for atleast a month so will cost me another £15 or so. 3, look on my daughters face PRICELESS, already looking at upgrading the stereo lol.

The tax is the issue just tax it for the month, then you can use it for a couple of weeks just to make sure it's running well. The number of ANPR cameras around its just not worth the risk to get stopped or a letter in the post . The insurance side of things can you change insurance to the new car for 24 hours to get it home legal then change back. But no cover if it's stolen from the driveway.but if you don't own it not sure. Way to slow...

Haven't all car's got to be insured no matter what even if sorn?

Post 793020 by Nealevo on 2015-12-11 19:50:03
Haven't all car's got to be insured no matter what even if sorn?
If you have the option on your fully comp insurance to drive other vehicles then the car does not need insurance as long as it does not belong to you, your insurance will only be 3rd party if you use it, and if you crash then you are liable for all damages, that's what I was told by my insurance I even got then to email me so I could show the police if/when I got stopped. Sorn cars don't need insurance unless they are parked in a public place/road, his driveway will be fine. If you tax the car online for 1 month, drive it home and then cancel it, you may not be charged if you are quick.
Haven't all car's got to be insured no matter what even if sorn?
All cars have to be insured if they're taxed.
Haven't all car's got to be insured no matter what even if sorn?
Just looked this up and .. The other car needs to have insurance at all times, even if nobody drives it – UNLESS it’s declared off the road with a SORN notification. This is because of the Continuous Insurance Enforcement laws introduced in 2011. The law says all vehicles must be insured, regardless of whether or not they’re in use, unless they’re declared SORN.

Quite lucky that my insurance gives me access to the MID to add & delete vehicles as & when..... :B_thumb:

I was thinking of a traders policy but got costs down to cheap this year and would be more expensive with a traders policy. But handy for picking cars up, I usually have them delivered if I can't be bother to collect Shipley £100 for olive 855r to do 175 miles from Nottingham to Portsmouth

Post 793029 by stephenevans99 on 2015-12-11 21:33:57

Another benefit of a Traders policy....is Trade Plates, couldn't live without them.....that's why I recommend Mike asking the dealer to deliver the car.

Dare we ask what car you've bought her?....I've been looking at the 2008> Suzuki Swift for my sons first car, quite a decent looking small car, a bit of street cred and appears to be 'cheap' to insure

Checked all the previous mots on the gov website and only failures have been worn tyres and pads. Annoying thing is the insurance is going to cost me another £1600, but this is the going rate for new young drivers :wow:

Post 793038 by stephenevans99 on 2015-12-11 23:26:16

She'll be well made up with the Peugeot .....totally agree, insurance is ridiculous for a young driver and I can't see it getting any better tbh.

We've just helped the daughter buy a Citroen c1, we went that way as the tax is only £30 and insurance £1100, it's about the cheapest thing for them to insure, the 207 was £1800 insurance. Whatever they have I just hope they don't need to use the insurance.
