Very cool, love those I saw one for sale last year was tempting
Post 794819 by jamesy12345 on 2016-01-10 22:11:41
The plan is to do what it needs to make it safe/get it through an MOT (a proper one), then either continue on with it to make it look pretty or sell it....depending on whether my attention span holds out!! And money you say Neil! It owes me 500 quid atm

Peas 'n' rice, it's worse than I thought!
What's the availability like for replacement panels, etc for these?
They are a pretty cool and rare car, crack on :)
Post 794822 by t5 pete on 2016-01-10 22:21:06
Good question can you still get new strut towers for them

Negative on the panels availability I'm afraid. they've probably all been used up (& now rusted to death too). Looks like a spot of cannibalism/parts hoarding has been going on...

something like that...the car is now with a 21 owner/part time trader in Liverpool, he's doing the work up to MOT all this is far beyond my skills
He's going to try and persuade the MOT tester to come & give some advice on what MUST be done

Saw a white R21 turbo on eBay recently, and thought of you, but I knew you wanted a Quadra. Drove a R18 turbo, back in the day, hateful car, no grip, and the steering was way too light, especially at 100 mph+

That's a classic and for £500 a bargain almost as good at the bx16v at £300, cost £100 for the mot. I've got 1/4 of the body work to do that you have. Couple plates in the boot and on inner wings and a bit around rear wheel arch, not terrible for a 26 yr old Citroen.
How's the 4x4 work on these traditional 50/50 split? No coupling on rear diff

Yeah I thought so for 500 quid. Came with a spare engine, box & prop plus the guy reckons that exhaust manifold is Inconel...jury is still out on that one! I very much doubt I can get that through an MOT for 100 pounds though....!! Will try ones best
There's a video here that shows the set up somewhere, think it is this one:

Engine torque is split, via a centre differential, 65 per cent to the front wheels and 35 to the rear under optimum conditions. A viscous coupling senses any slippage between the front and rear wheels and transfers drive to those which have the most grip according to need. If conditions get really slippery, the driver can opt to pneumatically lock the rear differential, but then only first and reverse gears can be engaged. Also, with the diff lock engaged, the anti-lock braking system is switched out.
It all worked in 1991, anyways..

Excellent! You can't beat an old French car, I've great memories (yes they're juvenile but then i was 19 at the time) of having a burn up driving my friends Renault 21 Turbo (in silver) and his other car a 405 Mi16, both handled so well and the 21 was much faster than the raw numbers suggested!
I went on to buy a ZX volcane 1.9i followed by a ZX 16V (same engine as Mi16), but my friend inevitably pranged his 21 Turbo in a ditch, that was the end as it folded like paper...
Can't wait to see your renovation!
Post 794842 by Soulboy on 2016-01-11 09:01:35
Wow,a Quadra! They were rare even back when they were still in production
I worked for a car front in the early 90's and the boss kept a white 21 turbo that we got in for himself,he loved it.
He gave me a lift to pick up a 405 Le Mans that he'd bought at auction,he was gutted that I sat glued to his bumper all the way back along the North Circular lol
I would have loved either of those cars at the time but they were still bucks!
Be nice to see the your 21 back to it's original condition (-;

Plan for MOT is end of next month/start of March btw!! Need to work out what to do with that branch off the manifold...must have been for an external wastegate. But there is an actuator on the turbo also??

No idea on the actuator and external wastegate arrangements - Although I'm impressed there are already shiny engine pieces ready to be fitted!

Surely that turbo's pointing the wrong way?
Looks like the manifold is far too big also, is that even gonna fit in the bay without having to cut a hole in the inner wing?!
Got a name for it yet?

Cheers for comments fellas!!
I got the car for around 500 quid, had a guess at how much I might be able to sell it on for (about 1500 with a ticket maybe) then started to price the work up with bodyshops.....as you might imagine no-one with VAT & overheads to pay was interested in doing this amount for work for even near a grand
so I gets in touch with a guy who was into Renault 21's - and in another life he was into Volvo 480's as 'Nocturnal Developments' - he is doing the work as and when he can. I'll need to get the ticket as he isn't a trader now but going well so far. MOT guy has been given the heads up what we are doing & given some advice so hopefully should be back on the road at some point

Yes mate you can see some of his old posts on the 480 forum - username is Haz. He used to work with Scoff who built that 5 which did 10 sec/140+ mph quarter mile runs. Scoff now works for EFI parts who made the loom for my T2.
I think I might send that story to Eastenders
Post 797767 by jamesy12345 on 2016-03-07 08:03:41
Provisionally sold, unfinished, for 1500 quid...if it does sell for this, I will have made 250 quid on it - 550 quid purchase price, almost 300 quid transport costs, 400 quid parts. No labour as the guy doing it asked to buy it. First time in my life I will have made any money on a car
Value according to Practical Classics price guide, not sure how up to date this is:

So if the guy finishes it off he can make a little bit also, plus there was a spare gearbox with it that is worth a ton at least
Prices of T2's gone mad btw...no wonder it got stolen

Good result! It would've made a nice car, but I think you're right in walking away at this point. I had a 21 Savanna - the estate version, and loved it. Also had a Mk 1 CX GTi Turbo which was a mad mad car - fantastically comfortable and huge torque right from tickover.

I didn't plan it but maybe the guy doing the work did!! AFAIK he will continue the work til MOT. Fine for me nothing lost, maybe even a couple of hundred quid gained if all the parts sell.
My work pal has just been given his notice so my timing is good for a change

Looks goods either way!

Cheers fella, it's not me it's a guy who stays near Liverpool, who does the work in his spare time - doing good so far! Not sure how the finish will all look after all this (hence FBB) but should get through the MOT, which was/is a goal for the project.
For me certainly good enough to use him in the future if he's interested for other projects. I haven't asked him yet but I need some bodywork doing on the 5 & an EFI system installed once I get the inlet manifold fabricated....

The plan was as soon as I get back, which has been delayed a bit due to a shutdown (which we completed flawlessly ;))...but since I've sold the car on I think the urgency has gone out of it. I think he's got big plans for this one & it might not end up quite standard so could be a bit yet

I'll sell them fella if possible to try & recoup some of the damage. Supposedly an Inconel manifold with a carbon steel flange  might be better off weighing them in
Looking on the net the standard intercooler appears to be front mount of a sort but tiny! It's not how big it is, it's what you do with it etc
Post 802076 by jamesy12345 on 2016-06-15 08:58:09
Progress a bit slower now while sorting the pointy end out. A fair amount of the spares that came with the car didn't work/fit together, so a bit of time has been lost sourcing standard parts or modifying stuff to fit

In the 90's I delivered cars for a repair centre, remember a 205 gti Guttman coming in once for minor wing damage,I took it up the road to get round the back to the workshop, that thing was fecking unbelievable! Chatted to the owner, realising it wasn't normal, turns out it was lightened balanced 1.9 with high lift cam, throttle bodies, special suspension and brakes etc.
Got excited about delivering it back,no,no,no says the owner I'll collect it,gutted!

Nothing too awful... hopefully a good run up to temp will sort emissions, probably the braking imbalance thing could be the biggest headache if the corrosion can be treated and tidied up (sort of hidden) without welding?
Post 803281 by Gold 'N' Brown on 2016-07-22 15:04:33
I don't like the fact that exhaust noise is a discretionary item, they should standardise it and use a noise meter, like they do at race tracks. Yet another area where the system can be abused by a grumpy tester on a bad day, or just an absolute ££££ nugget.
Post 803282 by jamesy12345 on 2016-07-22 16:29:13

Not much really compared to what it was...surprised about the emissions tbh - the car is a '91 so should be pre-cat test. My R5 with K-jet fuelling always flies through. Maybe the injectors are buggered. Most of the car is weld metal know so can't say I'm worried about repair of the subframe mounts/cross member

Agree with that, it looks like the car has had a good going over by someone without a passion for rusty old French tat. Tbh though I don't mind - I'd rather someone gave it a proper check over than something was missed & surprises me later

Aye what he said!! Cheers fellas. I'm back at work now like but it's not bad by all accounts. Not mint at all but good enough to use & improve with a bit more fettling. The goal was only to get it through an MOT for me. I need to craft a well worded Fleabay advert & pop it on there

What Adrian said^^ cheers fella
Very little interest tbh! I'm considering keeping it although the Black Pearl Necklace was meant to be my new reliable daily. There's a chap offered me 2k for the Quadra, the car owes me about 2200 altogether

There's a story behind the name as usual but not one I'd write down (even in the NSFW section)
