Not much to look at at the minute, but I've a few bits due to arrive next week, so will have something better for you to look at then. Here's an intentionally crap picture of her, loaded to the gills when I was moving house earlier this year (yes, that's a table and a computer chair tied to the roof): It's got a 2.5 TDi (AEL) Audi engine, on which the vacuum pump is powered by the camshaft. A while ago, I could hear a distinct ticking out of the engine, which I thought was just the tappets, but it turned out to be the vacuum pump being filled up with crud, sticking, and making it very hard for the camshaft to operate. Resulting in this: I sent the head away to get redone, and it's been an expensive and time consuming fix, but I eventually got everything fixed and back together, however when I went to put the injectors back in, it seemed like there was something missing, from the injector clamping system, because the clamps weren't holding the injectors in place properly, and the injectors were blowing out. After much (MUCH) head scratching I realised that there are supposed to be little cups for the clamps to lever on, but they were missing from my engine. Here's a picture of a similar engine, indicating the little nodes that were missing from my head. After more head scratching, I realised that they must have got knocked off the head when I sent it to get redone! I was realising all of this whilst trying to get the car running in order to take her to the MOT later that day. Getting the nodes back from the head guy wasn't an option at the time, so I made my own: Here's the general idea: I rounded the end of the bolt so that it would sit into the little holes in my engine head, and then lock-tighted nuts onto the other end, in order to create a depression for the injector clamp to sit into as well. No pictures unfortunately, as space in the bay is too tight to get a good pic, but they worked absolutely perfectly! Also, here's a crank locking tool I made out of a bit of pipe and the pulley off my old water pump: The car's driving, but the pump timing's not 100%, so going out to try and sort that now. Now that I've got all of the un-fun work done, I've got a few goodies arriving next week and it's time to move onto the performance stuff.

Good work bud. What goodies you fitting?

It's a secret until next week ;) No engine work just yet, but my build will be heavily inspired by your own :B_thumb:

Ok, so next week was a looooong time coming. :S Firstly gonna make a quick post to name and shame some "businesses" I've been dealing with. Partly out of a desire to prevent it happening to anyone else, and partly out of vindication. #1. I ordered lowering springs from Stevesthings shop on eBay. It turned out that they were selling items that they hadn't got in stock, and after ignoring my emails and f'ing me around to the point where I got p'ed off with them, they actually ended up threatening to send their relations round to my house to "have a word with me". Seriously, this actually happened! I eventually got a refund after taking out a case against them, but had a shocking experience from start to finish. *AVOID* #2. Purchased a V70R bumper and side skirt from a guy on eBay. Arranged via Shiply for courier by the name of John Jones aka johnboy291179 to collect and deliver the items. Long story short, here is the feedback I left for him on Shiply. "TIME WASTER. Had to constantly chase John for 2 weeks regarding the collection of item. I was fed excuse after excuse. Ended up cancelling collection. Still have note received refund after repeated requests. John Jones is ignoring my emails. The amount of time I have wasted, and the very poor service that I have received is unbelievably frustrating and demoralising!" Got a refund after having to take a case up with PayPal. Jones made no attempt to make good on our arrangement, or refund me at any time! *AVOID* #3. I tried to advise Shiply of the ordeal I was having with this guy, and again long story short, they basically said "Nothing to do with us". Needless to say, I would be much further down the line with the project, if I hadn't had to waste so much time and resources on all of these clowns.

Besides that, the old girl has spent a fair bit of time off the road, broken down in various forms as well lol. As she sits at the minute, she has: • Bilstein B4 shocks • Eibach 30mm Pro-Kit Springs • Meyle HD Drop Links • Modified 15mm wheel spacers • Custom Wheel bolt adapter washers • Modified extended wheel bolts • 18" Jaguar Aruba alloys • Federal 595: 205 45 18 Ok, where to start. I'll see if I can get some pictures next time I have the wheels off, but purchased a set of 850, 15mm wheel spacers, and had about 1.5mm milled off them so that the Jag wheels would fit on over the top. These spacers came with extended wheel bolts, which I also had to purchase adapter washers for, so that I could use them with the flat mounting surface of the Jag wheels. Unfortunately, even these extended bolts weren't actually long enough to securely hold the wheels on, and only screwed in by about 3 threads. So it was back to the drawing board. I'd recently redone the engine head, and had some head bolts lying around, which I realised were the same thread as the wheels. So I bought more of these, and then cut them down to my required size. I also had to get new flat faced adaptor washers custom milled for the new bolts: Here's the wheels being refurbed, and with new centre caps: Here's what she looked like pre suspension kit: Unexpected side effect of the larger wheels is that she began to catch the front of the rear arch when carrying a load in the boot. This happened so severely on one occasion that she bloody wrecked the front of the rear arches, and snapped off the back of the passenger side skirt :/ (I may have been going faster than I should have with said load.)

A sad but inevitable day has arrived. Project Diesel Power has belched her last black cloud. The venerable old beast clocked up a respectable 326,607 miles, but she was just giving me too many problems to justify spending any more on her. To say she was rough around the edges would be generous, but here are some pictures of where it got to before she was put out to pasture. Not to worry though, I bought another diseasle, with half the miles and very good bodywork. Project Diesel Power Mk2 on the way. Think the new one deserves a remap ;)

Post 811307 by petrolh34d on 2017-04-19 22:46:17

That was the plan for the old one, but modification money was always converted into monthly repair money lol. My new V70 is 10 times the car that the old one was. The guy who had it before me was a V70 enthusiast and looked after it really well. Currently removing performance parts for swap over this weekend. RON Box on the way after that. Remap will come after I invest in injectors :ready2go:

Oof... My 850`s on 313k. Guess I should be getting worried! :( Looking forward to the new project :)

The remap will only cost a tad more than a ron box and work a lot better! Also when you do get injectors I can alter the map to suit them for a minimal charge. Do it right the first time ;)

Post 811319 by petrolh34d on 2017-04-20 13:30:49

Good advice! How much will a remap cost and where can I get it done? I just happen to have a spare ECU now as well.

Post 811320 by Doingitsideways on 2017-04-20 14:34:37

Martin does them himself. Even beter as you have a spare ecu :)

Post 811321 by martin_r_smith on 2017-04-20 15:02:57

^^^yeah what he said^^^ I do them myself, i got fed up with cowboys and false promises so learned how to do it. I don't charge a lot for it really, in fact after paying to get the ecu socketed I make very little myself! If you send me the ecu then it takes about a week to turn around at a cost of £150 plus postage, if you get the ecu socketed yourself I'll do it for £75 and just send you the new chips to install yourself. On standard hardware you will see at least 170bhp and 300ft/lb, maybe upto 190bhp if you have a de cat exhaust, your timing is set well and engine all healthy. The pro's over a ron box are better control over the fueling (not max fuel all the time), better boost control (no mbc) and the timing is altered to reduce smoke output and gain torque. I also map out EGR so the computer is happy when it's blocked off.

Sounds fantastic! Will be in touch soon! Incidentally she'll be inheriting the straight through exhaust from the old Volvo. It's one of the best diesel exhaust notes I've ever heard. People are always commenting on how well it sounds. It's not even mega loud outside of the vehicle, but it's a bit droney inside, so I'm going to look into dynamatting the boot as well.

Post 811323 by Doingitsideways on 2017-04-20 17:45:24

Agreed on the exhaust note. They sound awesome when giving it a boot full. Love to rev too, for a derv :)

Not a performance mod, but I was constantly getting it in the ear from my fiance, because she was constantly getting it in the ear from the straight through exhaust. She bloody hates it, but I bloody love it (granted though, on long journies the drone did begin to grate a bit.) So I robbed a pile of the foam and sound proofing from my old V70, cut it to shape and then used a can of adhesive spray to stick it to the boot floor. I also put some foam down between the floor and the back of the seats. The difference it makes is crazy! Once again, I can hear all the other creaks, rattles and bangs that the straight through used to drown out. Joy :sorry: Overall the driving experience is much more pleasant now. Remap time then ;)
