Euro Ncap is quite misleading to be honest. the thing is once a car is created it is tested out under strict tests, but, heres the critical bit, it can never be tested again.... not even if they change it and increase the maximum achievable figure up to 5 star, from 4 star for example. so, when volvo launched the first S/V40's in 1997 they were tested, and came a maximum 4 star, out of a possible 4 stars. then a few years later Euro Ncap increased the limit to 5 stars, as an extra point was added to the test. BUT even though the S/V40 would have achieved the 5 star pass, they were not allowed to re-enter the car for testing again to get the latest star. this made a black mark on volvo's safety image, as, for example, renault were making newer cars with 5 star awards, which on paper looked better than the volvo's 4 star, even though in real life the volvo was a safer vheicle for passengers and pedestrians. now they have launched the V50/New S40 model it has the 5 star maximum award, but if the Ncap test decide on adding a 6th Star to the test, then once again, even if the vehicle is above and beyond what is required, they will not test it again for the new star, so could look worse than a car it is actually better than. can you see how this is a bit misleading now? i had this explained to me by a fella from the volvo safety centre who was present at a volvo training day i went on last year (think it was actually the pre-launch testing day for the V50/S40 model)
