Oil Burners "Not burbers" Are we seeing a change from Diesel to Petrol. I believe that Volvo are adding petrol engines to a few models. Mazda and others are doing the same. Are we now seeing market changes.

I've bought a petrol car (S60 2.0T) in case the stupid politicos raise tax on diesel.

Driving my smoky oil burning Alfa 156 2,4JTD with pride got to do 500 miles tomorrow/Tuesday so not on their way out as far as I'm conncerned.
For future-proofing, or quieter running ?
my Bimmers got an aftermarket exhaust so the opposite of quiet. I don't like all the un-needed emissions gubins you get on newer diesels. The old mans got a diesel Chrysler 300c. It gained a common fault with the fuel swirl pot motor, looked on the forums & they all just said unplug it, you won't notice any difference, & he didn't. So why's it got it

So why's it got it
Depends how he drives but the swirl pot motor moves flaps in the inlet manifold and is supposed to give extra low down torque when needed by swirling the diesel fuel (it helps atomise and mix more air with the fuel for easier quicker burning). A lot of owners cap off the holes with bolts etc where the rods operate when problems arise but they are there for a reason. On my Merc. a light will come up when the swirl motor fails and also they can go into limp mode? I can`t see why they can blame diesels for being more unhealthy as they use half as much fuel than a petrol motor for the same mileage?

Because they want us all in these stupid super Eco minis 960kg I'm hoping with the out vote etc we won't have these stupid laws from Brussels in regards to a made up green issue. I.m.o it's be green = more taxes.

Going to hammer my Alfa oil burner more than ever just in case their days are numbered. I will buy a manual Saab 9-5 Aero(again) if it comes down to it, with 250/260 standard bhp and 32-34mpg so best of both worlds.

I am in a similar position Foamy. I have an Alfa 156 1.9 150 and the 850R. I still have a hankering for a decent Saab Aero for some reason. Are they any good? Diesels are good on fuel but don't really float my boat. I like the mid range and top end rush of the turbo petrols.

Well I shall keep on going with the diesel until I'm forced to stop. I am so close to creating the perfect car imo, the 850 looks, t5 power (and a bit more lol) and decent 40+ daily mpg.

What struck me immediately was how good it was on fuel but still nice and powerful. Used a lot of oil though even after I cured various leaks/changed the PCV etc. Only sold it cos I got drunk one night and bought my V70 R back, and no point in having 2 large Swedish performance estate cars. Mine was an 02 plate, but I will buy another if anything happens to my R.

Apart from a diesel Ford escort van for my work before i retired this Merc. is my first large Diesel engined motor. The mpg for what it is is remarkable and the mid range and top end rush is more than comparable to petrols but as always each to his own. I have just done a quarter mile run the other day can`t find where it goes in here on a 2016 table so i have put it here.

Having a S60R, V70R, C70 T5, XC90 2.5T, and RX8 none of which manages 30 mpg, and 2 of which struggle to make 20 mpg, I think it's fair to say we don't care about mpg, what we do care about is our cars not sounding like tractors. :D

Post 802755 by foammanmark on 2016-07-03 17:35:39

Only 1 out of our 4 cars is a tractor with the V70 R, C70 T5, 156 1.8TS being the petrol motors. You've made me feel better about the mpg's that we achieve!!

Looking forward to when the diesels are on their last blackened breath tbh....Focus RS will be parked where the D5 currently wallows.

A pal of mine works making turbocharger sealing rings. A great deal of the growth in business lately has been through the choices manufacturers have made in terms of turbocharging smaller petrol engines. Everyone from Ford to Porsche are downsizing, lopping off cylinders and adding turbo chargers. I think the day of the oilburner may soon pass...

I also own a 1.8 Petrol Zafira only done 68,000 and it will not do more than 30mpg anywhere or any speed! Just come back from Somerset with a 4hr drive my ears were buzzing as cos it`s an MPV people carrier it revs like hell on the M way and it is not even a turbo although a healthy 140bhp. The economy on the dash computer went up by 0.1 mpg in 800 mile holiday....really terrible. Next holiday to France is in the Merc. so it being an Mway motor economy should be superb? Sadly bit by bit the day of the private car is almost over especially the coming of driverless cars and proberly only 60mph....... I don`t think the oilburner will pass because of commercial vehicles and the need for that type of engine, so what ever development is made for these it will be included for private vehicles.
