Saffron C70, T5, needs to be lower

I have always thought these C70's have great potential looks wise.
And finally got hold of one.
T5 GT for sale on here. Picked up last Tuesday, couldn't have been a nicer seller.
Drove home faultlessly. Albeit a bit smooth, Far too smooth to be called one of my cars. That will need to change
First things first, a good clean.
After a wash the car got clayed above the swage line to see how it will come out when my buddy details it (detailR if you were interested in Milton Keynes, hes done wonders for my zed)
Then into the engine bay.
New dipstick and tube ordered as this one was snapped, airbox removed, dump valve blanked, Carbon canister pipes removed, lots of hose removed, and now I get turbo chatter, headlining out so i can hear it.
I will be turning the boost up soon to see how it goes.
Also checked the pvc, the glove was not saying hello so im guessing its not blocked.
I checked the cambelt and noticed oil on the underside and on the exhaust pulley. So looks like the oil is disappearing through that seal.
Removed the worst of the tow bar and need to cut off the flanges left, but i will be leaving the rest of it as its a free strut brace.
Headlight wipers and washers removed makes the front look alot cleaner, i did take the number plate off aswell but i cant be bothered with running the risk of being stopped for a fine, so only when its parked up will it come off.
Coilovers will be on order very soon as its so desperate to be low. And I have a few wheel ideas in mind.
Mark

Looks lovely mate!! Dont go for the cheap Pro sports and make the same mistake i did!!!!
Post 802602 by Sparkysparks on 2016-06-28 19:49:27
What coilovers? I have gone for cheap ta tachnix. Although cheap they have served me well in the past on a few cars.
Should be arriving friday. Retro show sunday so time will be taken on prep on the zed. Hopefully fit them next weekend and see how low it goes.
Post 802609 by Robbin Houses on 2016-06-28 21:28:36
Yeah i brought pro sport coilovers and they are awfull!! Ive always liked the c70s, if i didnt need the space in my v70 i would deffo got one of these!!
Post 802610 by Sparkysparks on 2016-06-28 21:48:08
Yeah the 850 was incredibly vertsatile. And this has a tony hole in the boot in which to get things in. It wont be a good hauler. But itll look good on the way
Post 802840 by M-R-P on 2016-07-06 14:43:48
For performance, you're better off with the standard airbox and filter (but you'll lose the nice sound).
Also, it looks like the recirc pipe has been removed - has it been blanked off?
Post 802843 by Sparkysparks on 2016-07-06 16:09:28
Recirc valve has been plugged but not removed yet.
Standard airbox may be better but i like the chatter :D
I may yet put the snorkel back in place to help with air flow but in all honesty i dont think it will matter.
Post 802849 by stribo on 2016-07-06 17:39:30
Although the pro sport coilovers are bloody uncomfortable, (and those ta technix look very similar) they do give a nice stance.
I'm looking at getting some BCs once I've sorted the engine.
Post 802856 by Sparkysparks on 2016-07-06 20:57:17
Yes they will be the same. And that does look good. Perfect example of what im after really

You need to do more than plug the recirc mate. Best thing to do is put the pipe back on and fit a one-way valve. It'll lock the recirc shut with pressure but stop it opening. That'll save you having to blank it off too.

Thats a good shout actually. Ill look into doing that as i do feel im letting pressure escape somewhere.
Jamesy thats a different zed haha. I was running low 14's at pod the other day. The last one was doing 12's. I guess i just cant drive.
If i can get this volvo near that ill be more than happy.
The clio my mate had off you is destined to be scrapped now. Dont worry, all the good bits are off and waiting to go into the next one.
Post 802990 by Sparkysparks on 2016-07-11 13:32:10
Ive got the coilovers on. I need to take them back off though as i didnt put the conical topmounts on. I only used the volvo top mount and not the intermediate one. (the bearing one) So its a bit clonky at the minute.
Also got the springs in the rear, but couldnt release the acorn nuts on the shocks so im still on original shocks (does anyone have and tips for me, I know its a simple job but they are so tight im worried about snapping the stud off). It looks much like the above image, which ive decided is no where near low enough at the back. I can live with the front for now (when finished) as the tires just scrub when turning.
I have to say, the difference already is incredible. Feels like a proper car now instead of a quick sofa. Feels very much like power os going to the wheels now instead of being soaked up in springyness.
Post 803024 by stribo on 2016-07-13 09:43:55
Even with the top mount fitted, it'll still be clonky, as the top of the coilover sits on the metal part of the top mount, not the rubber part.

Come on now my S70 does low 14's :) What happened to the Clio fella?
Post 803026 by Sparkysparks on 2016-07-13 12:42:56
Well got my rear shocks on and the topmounts on the front. Its all good, no clonks, good feel to it. Not low enough still though. Problem is up front the tires are too big, and theres no more adjustment on the rear. Will use it for a while and see how i get on.
Ive got the spiders in the front shocks and seems to be holding them solid.
On the drag times front i think it was mainly my ability, not the cars. Although i am getting conflicting boost readings, needs to be investigated.
The clio ended up being more rotten than a donor, so it will be swapped over via subframe into a newer shell, when we get a chance that is.

sorry to hear that it looked good on the top oh well hope the engine & bits were worth it
Post 803029 by Sparkysparks on 2016-07-13 14:21:02
No problem, the bits on it were well worth it. It wasnt to bad tbh its just cheaper to put it all in a new car than to repair.
Post 803268 by Sparkysparks on 2016-07-22 08:16:42
Fitted a boost gauge through the bulkhead grommet to the intake that i had previously blocked off. Getting stuttering readings up to 10, then realised the tube had melted together so im suprised im getting anything atall.
Also the mbc i fitted seemed to have a negative effect so have removed it again. I got boost up to 10 on and off. ECU threw up a code for turbo sensor flow too high.
Theres also still a hesitation on throttle that seems strange. And to top it all a coilpack went, replaced, and now ive got a misfire on 3, the original cylinder the coil went on.
Also had a puff of smoke from exhaust. Something tells me this car will need some serious looking after. It looks good though.
Post 803347 by Sparkysparks on 2016-07-25 08:29:13
I need help with this people. This car seems to like killing coilpacks.
I have been getting p301, 303, 300 codes come and go. and misfiring and hesitation alot.
Started with the spark plugs, they seem a good colour.
Nothing wrong with them.
But the gaps were ridiculous. Some at 0.7.
So all regapped at around 0.26 for extra boost, was smooth but still some hesitation which im unsure about. It wasnt there a couple of weeks ago.
Now im getting misfires again on 1 and 3.
Can anyone advise where to go now as its doing my head in. Need to start modifying this car but cant do anything if its not running right.
Thanks
Mark
Post 803351 by stribo on 2016-07-25 09:53:16
Check the wiring harness for the coil packs, with age, and much heat the insulation gets brittle, and can fail, leading to it shorting out on the head. BTW 0.26 sounds far too small a gap, stick with 0.7mm.
Post 803354 by Sparkysparks on 2016-07-25 10:10:44
Well on other websites i found info saying 0.3 to 0.28 for normal applications and 0.26 for upping the boost.
It did run instantly smoother with these gaps, but im still getting the main issue.
The wiring has always looked sound but the conduit is cracking up. The plugs and terminals look spot on and non green. Will check the wiring again.
Also another website is saying a dirty maf could be causing this. Any truth in this?
Mark
Post 803356 by M-R-P on 2016-07-25 10:32:14
A dodgy maf can cause allsorts of weirdness on these engines but I've not heard of it killing coilpacks.
Might be a bad earth somewhere.
Post 803359 by Sparkysparks on 2016-07-25 11:06:44
Funny you should say that, I was having a play through the lanes and then it started to feel this limp feeling, the throttle hesitation. This was after i put a new coilpack in to cure the first misfire (which it did) and when i got home i noticed the earth strap from the head to drivers chassis leg was snapped. So i replaced for another earth (same points) and the feeling has never left.
Post 803360 by M-R-P on 2016-07-25 12:01:41
Think there's a couple more earth straps elsewhere (can't remember where tho) might be worth having a snoop about.
Post 803361 by Sparkysparks on 2016-07-25 13:02:58
I have found one accross the head on the other side to the bulkhead. That is intact.
There is also a large one going from battery to chassis, that is intact if a little green. Cant see any others.
Is there one for the throttle against the starter or is that just newer models?
Post 803362 by M-R-P on 2016-07-25 13:18:41
Don't recall seeing one.
Have you had a good look around the loom for the coil packs? Even slight cracking in one of the feed cables are can arc to the cylinder head and cause trouble.
Post 803364 by Sparkysparks on 2016-07-25 13:50:34
I will be having a look when i get home. I should bring my toolkit to work.
Ive got to finish the spring seats tonight. Front and brake discs and pads, and shoes if the ones i have fit. And measure up the exhaust for some straight pipeness.
Will be busy tonight.
Wont be using it tomorrow so may leave it dismantled for more testing.
Post 803460 by Robbin Houses on 2016-07-28 20:43:30
Ive noticed an earth that goes to the block, its proper buried though..only saw it once i had the rad out right in the centre
Hooe you get it sorted mate
Post 803472 by Sparkysparks on 2016-07-29 08:12:14
I have read that there was one from the throttle to the starter area. I dont want to go digging for that one but i may have to.
Got another coilpack on the way for another misfire. I think the cars going to finish them all off one at a time in the next few weeks.
Also exhaust is ordered, and even misfiring the car sounds awesome with nothing on.
Post 803707 by Robbin Houses on 2016-08-03 21:11:29
What exhaust you go for? Yeah that sounds like the one, might be easier to get to from underneath..worth giving it a clean up
Post 803712 by Sparkysparks on 2016-08-03 22:18:20
I meant ive ordered tube. Ive made my own. Straight pipe off the cat. (Cat will be gone at a later stage). Even with he missibg cylinder it soubds awesome right now
Post 803713 by Sparkysparks on 2016-08-03 22:21:54
Had a slight tweak since so its not on the floor.
When i get a chance i need to cut up some more pipe and weld in for rear original exit
Post 803737 by Wobbly Dave on 2016-08-04 12:26:47
There are 2 earths on the head - one by the end by the cam sprockets and one that connects about mid-point on the top engine mount.

Post 803738 by Sparkysparks on 2016-08-04 12:49:50
Yes the one by the cambelt had snapped. I have replaced that. The other one is still fine and intact.
Post 803770 by Robbin Houses on 2016-08-04 22:01:38
Exhaust looks awesome, try uploading a video when you've found that missing cylinder!! Lol
Post 803780 by Sparkysparks on 2016-08-05 08:06:36
Thanks, It's 2.5" pipe. only because it slots over the existing pipe, easier for creating the exhaust.
It wont be staying side exit as the missus says the cant take the scraping anymore. Ive had it on most cars and its always just under the sill and scrapes. So in the interest of keeping her happy ill rear exit it again.
The missing cylinder. I have been waiting for a coilpack for over a week now. Having issues with the seller and the courier, quite annoyed at it as money i saved buying the part im throwing down the cylinders of the nissan, not always un enjoyable :D
Video will be uploaded when i do get it going.
Post 803782 by M-R-P on 2016-08-05 08:22:48
You'll quite often see sets of 2nd hand pack going cheap on forums, it may be worth grabbing some. Especially if your car keeps eating new ones.
Post 803783 by Sparkysparks on 2016-08-05 08:24:33
Yes its always the toss up in my mind of £50 for a set of used ones, £15-20 for a new pattern part, or £45 for a new bosch one. Probable should stock up on used ones and keep a few tools handy in the car.
Post 803875 by Wobbly Dave on 2016-08-08 17:01:26
I keep spares in the car and a 1/4 inch set just in case.
Post 803883 by Sparkysparks on 2016-08-08 20:41:55
Well i finally got my coil. And the second one they sent out because it had essentially gone missing.
Runs sweet and i have a spare.
Boost is hitting 10 psi with a controller. But still hesitates if flooring. Its like a fuel cut type of hesitation
I have also had a few times now p0014 camshaft sensor. Could it be this giving me these symptoms?

The problem is, with it being a ME7, it monitors everything closely, so if it detects boost where it shouldn't have boost, or boost that is too high for a given throttle position rpm etc, it'll just rein it in. MRP would be the man to speak to, as I believe he ran his ME7 with a bleed valve successfully for quite some time.
Post 803897 by Sparkysparks on 2016-08-09 10:30:56
AAAhh god damn it, why does it have to be me7. Fun ruining ecu.
I have followed his steps so far. I think ill just put it all back to normal and see what effects it has. No more turbo chatter :(
Post 803931 by Sparkysparks on 2016-08-10 07:58:35
Box delete pipes cut (after the second attempt)
And welded together.
Now I need to take the exhaust off again and weld in place to have the rear exit back in place.
Hangers will be welded once its in place.
The side exit is getting better with every bump it hits. Making it flatter and flatter haha.
Post 803989 by Sparkysparks on 2016-08-11 10:08:38
I have also put the original pipework back in for the dump valve, carbon canister/breather and taken the boost controller out of the loop and guess what, it works fine now, no hesitation when driving or boosting. Im putting it down to the boost controller not being in. I already miss chatter though, It really doesnt sit right with me. I will be taking the dump valve out of the equation again along with the canister pipework but leave the boost alone. I guess it really is a case of remap or nothing.
So will be on the lookout for a 19t and some injectors soon.
Post 803994 by LeeT5 on 2016-08-11 10:47:47
Ever thought you might have a slow reacting BPS?
Get a new one from Volvo and see how she drives then!
Post 803998 by Sparkysparks on 2016-08-11 10:58:12
Hmm, possibly.
I will get the boost controller back in and see what it is standard, as i think i multi tinkered last time and put it all in at once.

I never bothered with the 19T because it already had one on it.

That bay looks nice and clean.
I dont want a recirc or an atmos dump valve atall though. Id like straight boost with no interruptions.
Post 804013 by Wobbly Dave on 2016-08-11 22:02:04
That will put a lot of backwash into your compressor during gear changes, which is not a good idea.
Post 804022 by Sparkysparks on 2016-08-12 08:10:18
It'll be ok, Ive had dump valveless turbos for years, never seen a problem. The only issues i come across is the lack of air input after the maf, cars tend to throw a wobbly without that going through.

Bent the exhaust forward coming off a kerb and then my car got hit
Eventful Saturday afternoon.
Was left a nice polite note admitting full responsibility, insurance had already been called, should be sorted soon. Not even angry really.
But just incase insurance tries to write it off, does anyone have a saffron wing and indicator ready to go?

Post 805214 by Sparkysparks on 2016-09-12 19:40:52
I shluld clarify that. Its not very loud its just to loud for the close i live in. People around me have a problem with me going to work in the mornings and keep calling council and police on me. Great really.
The mot guys i have are great. On first name terms with them haha

Post 805216 by Doingitsideways on 2016-09-12 19:52:18
I was more meaning I've never seen a garage so big since my old man was on the busses.
Nice neighbours you've got there.
I used to get much the same when I started my D24'd 960 on a cold morning when the exhaust had made a bid for freedom.
Old-skool turbo'd 2.4 straight-6 diesel, sounded like a dump truck when it coughed into life with just the DP attatched

I gave up trying to figure insurance companys out a long time ago.
I've seen them write off two year old cars with (apparently) only minor damage, but seen them repair older stuff that's wrecked.
££££££££s, the lot of them.
The bulk of the price there though is paying someone to use saffron paint.
Wouldn't have thought it's easy to match at all.
Post 805220 by Sparkysparks on 2016-09-12 22:33:37
Oh. Yeah it was a comercial mot station. Now privately owned. Ita great. Mot only
No repairs.
I think it was my 325tds that tipped the edge around here aswell actually. That sounded like a turbo tractor haha.
The ibsurance wouldnt listen to me saying dont worry about the door as i was changing it anyway. They wanted to change wing. Repair door. Check a pillar. Check alignment. Plastic under sheet. And paintwork. Ridiculous.
They wouldnt let me help source parts either. So i got a payout and the car back for £40. So the car now owes me nothing. And i can now map it with a clear conscience

I take it you've overhauled the brakes then? By overhauled, I mean, Check their integrity and roadworthiness, especially as you're going to be making the car faster!
At the very least you should be checking that the disc runout is within spec with sufficient pad and definately change the brake fluid.
Braided hoses are a good option, but not necessary.
Post 805228 by Sparkysparks on 2016-09-13 07:59:52
I have not done any of that. However i did put new discs on then took them back off because a) they were the smaller size and b) there was nothing wrong with what i had in the first place, the rears were the only cause for concern, and they have been changed.
There are no leaks through the braking system. No need to overhaul it really, although it could do with a fluid change, is it in the same reservoir as my 850 was with the clutch fluid? I think it is.
I had issues with that clogging up.
Post 805235 by kmb on 2016-09-13 11:53:54
Yep, same reservoir, a worthy piece of maintenance that fluid change - Makes a huge difference to brake feel if the existing fluid is in bad shape...
Post 805236 by Sparkysparks on 2016-09-13 12:00:52
Will add that to the list.
Just clued myself up on a bumper removal so i can have a go at the wing tonight. Looks fairly easy.
Post 805244 by stribo on 2016-09-13 13:11:29
A few torx screws at the front of the wheel arch, then 2 14mm bolts from underneath. The bolts will be tight all the way down the thread, and are pretty long, so take your time, and work the bolts in and out as you untighten them.
Post 805298 by Sparkysparks on 2016-09-14 08:29:48
Wing on, Fairly straight forward. Had to knock the bottom mounts back into shape. Its clearly been jacked up on it before.
Its a slightly darker shade :(
Still, its lovely and straight

Post 805306 by Sparkysparks on 2016-09-14 10:16:07
It might look a bit better after a wash and polish. But I can see its a different shade. Not enough to bother me though, seeing as the doors will match the wing.
Post 805600 by kmb on 2016-09-21 09:42:50
I sorted the door check strap on my 850, it's brilliant how easy the Volvo doors disconnect and come off (never done it with other makes so not sure if it's universally true)!
The colour difference is quite clear on the door picture.
Post 805603 by Sparkysparks on 2016-09-21 09:52:43
Well it would have been alot easier if I had the correct E female torx whatever I needed for the door hinge. Had to take the door off without the hinges. But managed to do it all the same.
Ive never done a door before either, but I am told I had it easy on the volvo. No knocking out of pins or real alignment issues.
It may polish to a better colour. Its not had a deep clean yet. But I certainly see it.

Having the correct female Torx socket def helps although an appropriate Hex socket can be placed over.
There should have been no need for removing hinges, just the little grub screw, disconnect the electrics and lift off?

Well thats what I had intended to do. But the doors didnt come with hinges anyway, so have had to put them on whilst im holding it up.
The loom came off alot easier then going on. That was a pain.

because BT had no electrics in the doors (or check straps) i left the torx screws out. It was fantastic to work on inside, lift the door off if its in the way lol
