I was a quality engineer for an optical lenses company making all kinds of cool stuff from sidewinder missiles to head up display units for f16 fighters. I decided I don't like quality seeing as I have to pretend to be plod. I start on Monday for a large company that makes self piercing riveting solutions in industry as an engineer. I'm EMTA mod app timed served & not the usual uni route to being an engineer. My experience as a contractor in Toyota & Airbus has got me in through the back door as such. :)

It's a massive site, 6000 employees. It's not very often someone I know gets mentioned tbh. I really enjoyed working there but without a degree I wouldn't get a permanent position. I worked on the assembly of a320, a321, a330 & a380 before finally becoming a part of the metrology department. Job security isn't very good as a contractor. My friend said this morning his 16 year old son has been offered an apprenticeship by them & was considering it. Its a no brainier for me. Lol

By trade I'm an aircraft engineer specialising in AAES (Aircraft assisted escape systems) ejection seats, parachutes, canopy jettison systems and such. Moved over into oil and gas about 6 years ago and wasted any time I was there because I wasn't prepared to suck or pre lube to climb a ladder. Ended up in a massive strop last year in the workshop, tools went one way and I went the other and never looked back I now play with concrete......... Basically I cover the north of Scotland inspecting and testing ready mix concrete, aggregates, ashphalt etc for roads, bridges, new developments and doing trial mixes dependant on the placement and delivery of materials. One day I can be in the bottom of a quarry, the next I'm up some mountain at a wind farm!
As of a few months ago I'm a class 1 HGV driver for a local supermarket chain, wish I'd done it years ago, so much easier than class 2
Which supermarket are you with, I'm with the co-op up in Scotland and definately prefer the class 1 work, would rather do longer drives and bigger stores where you just get 1 or 2 big drops than cutting about in 18tonne rigids doing 6 or 7 drops on each run etc. The whole supermarket thing is a doddle tbh, been at the same company 11 years now, class 2 for a couple of years then class 1 for 9 years ish now, used to drive an 18tonner for a foodservice provider, pubs, hotels, etc, all palletised so you had to break it down and use a sack barrow for each drop, 30-35 drops in Glasgow or Edinburgh, upstairs, down cellars etc, or if doing borders, fife etc with more driving could still be 20+ drops in a day, takes me about 6 months to do 30 deliveries now hahaha
