:uglyhamme: Lol - you need an intervention! How the hell are you going to squeeze that beast on the drive? The rest of the fleet getting thinned out to make room!? Do tell. It's always nice to see someone with less restraint than myself when it comes to buying Volvo's. I salute your opportunism. The V8 is the holy grail :)
Yeah, I had a brief chat with Tim Williams before hand and he pretty much said the same thing - the V8 is the one. Is yours still on the standard exhaust? If not, where did you get one from? Lovely wheels on yours too
Standard exhaust yeah. When I bought the car the previous owner had just spent £500 on a Powerflow cat back, but it was too loud for me. First thing I did was put a new genuine exhaust back on. Originally it had these 18's on Image Never really liked them, so kept my eye out for a set of 19's or the holy grail of XC90 wheels, 20" Cratus alloys. Finally managed to bag a set, by the time I refurbished them and put tyres on they costs a small fortune, but so worth it!

Post 806544 by Doingitsideways on 2016-10-24 21:37:08

Yeah, I'm not so sure on the 19s on mine. Think you were right on losing the 18s though, they just look too small! Hmm... The jury's still out on the exhaust. I'm like you I think in that it's a family bus so don't want it bonkers loud. There's a few vids knocking about of them with a rear silencer delete, so may try that. It's almost free! The middle resonator is massive, so shouldn't be too bad for just pootling about.

Post 806547 by stribo on 2016-10-25 07:48:07

Chris's exhaust is now on our XC90 (2.5T), it's loud on that, and pops and bangs like a goodun, so it must have souded epic on the V8.

Post 808265 by Doingitsideways on 2016-12-26 14:47:41

So... Kept the V8 away until Christmas morning as a surprise for Mrs Sideways. She's always moaning that she can't get anything in her C70 convertible, that I bought her last Christmas. To be fair, the boot is pointless on the P80 soft top. Half my thinking behing the XC90 was as a nice family car. Anyway, had it valeted Christmas eve, then pulled up on the drive Christmas morning with this in the boot for Little-Sideways: Image Little-un loved her C30, but that's about as far as the good feeling got. "It's too big," "That must have cost a fortune, where have you got the money from?" and "I don't want to get rid of my car, I like my car" were among the phrases of gratitude, live on the drive for all the neighbours to hear. Better than Christmas telly, I suppose. When I tried to explain that her C70, nice an idea as it was, isn't really suited to a young family and that we didn't necessarily have to get rid of it l, also that I work my arse off 8 days a week, I was apparently even more wrong for even thinking of such madness, thoroughly deserving the verbal diarrhoea that followed. Anyway, long and short of it is that I'll probably be selling it now. "You keep it for yourself." "Nah, I'm not paying the amount of money this has cost and will continue to cost, when I spend 99% of my time in the work bus. I'd probably only use it a dozen times a year. I'll just f##king sell it. Waste of time and f##king money." Happy Christmas, folks.

So, she still pretty much refuses to drive it. Also, I'm now sat awaiting recovery in the middle of traffic to the football with a suspected knackered voltage regulator, handily about a week outside the frankly bobbins warranty provided by the dealer that apparently was no use when the steering algle sensor started playing up a couple of months ago. Happy new year from my broken (possibly soon to be ablaze) XC90!

Post 808430 by Orca2 on 2017-01-02 17:41:04

This all reminds me of the story about a rich guy and a poor guy discussing what they had bought their wives for Xmas The rich guy says I bought her a diamond necklace and a brand new Mercedes Benz, the poor guy says why'd you buy her two things? The rich guy says I figured if she doesn't like her necklace she can drive back to the shop to exchange it in her new Mercedes. The poor guy says I got mine a pair of slippers and a dildo, if she doesn't like the slippers she can go ££££ herself.

Post 808432 by Doingitsideways on 2017-01-02 19:12:18

I can assure you, I am by no means a rich fella. But yes, as far as I'm concerned I may as well have bought the dildo. My sex life would be the same either way. So, for all who think this whole situation is hilarious: Image It started playing up on the way to the football, getting progressively worse. When random messages started appearing on the DIM, I knew it was running out of electricity, so thought it best to drop my dad at the game and try to limp home, change car and meet my dad back there during the game. That didn't happen. I got about a mile or so from the ground, I lost more and more gears until I only had 4th or 5th then it just gave up completely and the engine cut out. Helpfully, my Dad had done his usual thing and left his phone at home, so no matter what happened, I still had to go and pick him up or God knows where he'd end up left to his own devices. Waited two hours for recovery, dumped the car at home, jumped in the S70 and flew back to the ground hoping that I'd manage to find him wandering round after the game as I'd pretty much given up hope of seeing any of it. Found somewhere to park and got to my seat bang on the 90th minute, much to the amusement of the lads sitting around me. All in all a great day. Still, saved me paying £8 to park I suppose.

Post 808434 by stribo on 2017-01-02 19:41:44

So, has the alternator packed up, or is it a different problem?

Post 808440 by Doingitsideways on 2017-01-02 20:11:58

Suspected voltage regulator, like I said earlier Steve. I'd had a few red triangles of death over Christmas with "Power system service urgent" in the DIM. A couple of times it stayed on, others it went away. I only have poverty spec breakdown through my bank, so they didn't even look, just dragged it onto the flatbed. Jump started it though at home and it was charging, but I think whenever it detects a fault, it shuts the alternator off. I was speaking with TW recently and he reckons the regulators are prone to failure. Gave me a good price to change it too, considering they're an absolute ballache on the V8 (back of the block against the firewall, below a bank of cylinders) so just have to figure out how to get it down to him from Manchester.

I understand your frustration. I traded in my beautiful 98 v70 tdi for my current s60r . Had a nightmare with the volvo dealer who sold it to me as a volvo select car. It broke down in Yorkshire on our holiday. The dealer never changed the plugs as they said they would . Mrs has hated it ever since ! I really fancy an xc90 v8 to replace it so no doubt more grief on the way !

Alternator wrestling... Image Been at it all day. Alternator physically unbolted, but I'm fecked if I can figure out how it comes out of the gap. Two metal fuel lines in the way and I'd had enough of swearing and launching things across the drive. Thought it best to throw in the towel for the day before I really lost my rag and did some proper damage. :(

Post 810966 by Doingitsideways on 2017-04-09 19:18:26

Yeah, got that thanks J. It's just fought me every step of the way and I've had enough for one day. Example: Driveshaft was so stuck in the hub, even with heat and penetrating oil, I had to hit it so hard to knock it through the hub, I managed to mushroom the head of a 1/2" extention bar and the socket on the end is now there for good.

Post 810972 by Doingitsideways on 2017-04-09 21:55:57

Normally the way I like it ;) Nope, no mention at all. They're slap bang half way across the gap where it needs to come out. Rigid lines, even with the clips released from where they go up the side of the block, there's not enough give in them to buy me enough room without fully disconnecting and removing them. I'd just had enough by that point so thought it best to pack away before losing my temper with something brittle like that.

Cheers Ade. You know it's bad when both Shem and Tim both say how much of a pain they are

I think you have the engine the wrong way around, that might be the problem...
Cheers Ade. You know it's bad when both Shem and Tim both say how much of a pain they are
and they should know....lol if you drop the 2 lines (if you can get to release them, that is) you'll need new gaskets/seals etc.....it never ends...

Refitting is the reverse of removal.
Just make sure you keep the leftover fixings..
Always do. Image That's been rolling around the door pocket of the workbus since I changed the alternator on that about 18 months ago. Not done a proper job unless there's something left over. Have to test that Swedish over-engineering somehow

Well, alternator finally freed from it's prison today. 5 mins to change the regulator, then set about refitting. All went reasonably well until I got carried away with myself and refitted the driveshaft carrier and shaft, to then find that a big arsed metal brace opposite it wouldn't go back with it fitted. I'd well and truly had enough by this point, so packed up. Reconnected the battery and started it up... Success! :) It's saved itself from a blazing inferno... For now. Hopefully rejig everything next weekend and get it back on four wheels.
Lol col he's a star how was he the next day
There were of course, lots of drunken promises of help last night... First text to him at about 10:30 this morning: "Are you alive?" Second text at about half 1: "Guess not." Got a reply at about 3: "Just woke up. Mrs gone out with the car." He has his own car - a poorly Vectra diesel. I jumped in the workbus, drove round to his and told him he wasn't getting out of it that easily. To be fair, I couldn't have done it on my own. By about half 6 though, he was lay on his side on my drive in a bad way!

This is the location of the alternator on our 2.5T, looks tricky. :P

Well, she lives. Had more massive ballaches today while reassembling everything. Wrestled the driveshaft back into the hub to find that I'd mullered the thread in the end by belting it so hard to get it out, so the bolt wouldn't go back in. Ffs. Back out it came, after a fight, then had to look long and hard for the tap & die set. Can't even remember the last time this saw the light of day. Image Ah well, all back together now. Seems ok, but I've had a couple of ABS warnings flash up on the DIM. Presumably from me disturbing the sensor/reluctor ring. It's off now, see how it goes I guess. Oh, forgot this one from last weekend of Col trying to reconnect the live on the alternator  Image Payback as far as I'm concerned, from when I had to do the starter on his bloody Vectra: Image
