Over the last year the company I work for has been developing new tooling to cast and machine Volvo gearbox casings for Getrag, this is just the outer casing but is the most complex of the two parts, my role in this is to help in maintenance and up keep of the tooling and any modifications that we are asked to make to it. I was wondering who else on the forum is also involved with helping with production of Volvo parts etc. Image20161002_181941 by moleadrian, on Flickr

Most of us tend to destroy Volvo parts, Ade! Our most qualified in this particular area, namely gearbox casing destroyer, now lives in Australia.

a mate of mine who used to work in vehicle design done all the clay modelling for the 480, had an interesting chat how it changed from the original plans (originally didn't have the should/swage line)

I still miss my 480. Probably most of all my previous hacks :(
Looks like an awesome bit of engineering :) Should get a couple of pic's of the tool, the two halves must weight 10-12 tons and the process is quite clever, here's a company vid of what we do, it's a bit out of date on some of the products made and as for the narrative I couldn't possibly comment....lol
bet that was a really interesting job, with plenty of variety to it
by the sound of it yes, it was an independent company so got jobs from anyone. He worked on the BMW/Mini, Freelander, McLaren (the road car & F1 team) so always something different

I often do crane repairs for the company that makes the wing mirrors and a few other plastic casings for the current "SPA" volvos. It's the little things that make life worthwhile mate :)

It's the little things that make life worthwhile mate :)
we have five gantry cranes in the factory, 2 on each side and a transfer one between each side of the factory, with out these nothing would get done as the weights and sizes of the tooling is way to big to manually handle, the largest tool in there at present is 12tons for the moving half and 6tons for the fixed half and that casts the bell housing and front half of the new Alfa Romeo Giorgio gearbox it one piece, we also make the back section too, both of which are then machined in house ready for Getrag to assemble, nice to see car manufacturers going back the rwd and in line engines and gearboxes Image
Christ, how big and heavy are those mirrors then:tank:
They're injection-moulded parts, the tools that make up the mould is in 2 or 3 parts, weighing up to 4t each. If a crane fails during a tool change, it can cost 20,000 per hour in lost production.

Or Street/champion? They lock out when they get a bump or overloaded. Right pain in the arse.
Is it a kone crane by any chance? Or Street/champion? They lock out when they get a bump or overloaded. Right pain in the arse.
Abus with a Kone piggy backing on it, so we are able to roll the tooling over for repairs, they are iffy at times on the controls though
