Not sure if this list exists already but I would find it quite interesting if not. I think some boundaries need to be set though. For example my choice would be a brake upgrade obviously for ultimate performance you'd go AP's but being realistic a worthy upgrade is to 302's with decent pads.
So I'll start with that but rearrange if you think yours is better
1) 302mm brake upgrade

Strut brace

General Suspension refresh alot of stuff can be uprated at a similar cost to standard parts
Polybushes
Uprated Dampners and springs - Koni or Bilstein
New drop links is also a nice cheap upgrade

3" throttle body and rip kit
Post 808513 by MoleT-5R on 2017-01-06 11:22:32
A japanfold, even stock this will be a great improvement over the very restrictive standard 850 item and very cheap compared to the s60r item, compliment this with a fully 3" system for even better results

For the money, a HLM 304 map or a rica

Japanifold in the top 10? Exhaust yes I agree but maybe 3" isn't necessarily needed for most people's goals?? Same as 3" throttle body, should it be in the top 10?

What about the ipd arb's? I've not tried them personally but always hear good things about them

cheap bang for buck was my thinking as neither should cost much to do.

Not to sound pedantic, but I'd have to go for a stage 0
I discovered a few ponies by replacing ignition components - plugs, leads, arm/cap...
Gained me all of 0.1sec on the strip, but it drives so much better and you know you're making the most of any other mods.

Yeah I agree, and put it no 1 as it probably is the most important

Post 808532 by martin_r_smith on 2017-01-06 17:48:25
I suppose there should really be 2 lists, 1 for power mods and one for handling. And maybe it should be upgrades that are less than £500?? Might take the LSD of the list though with that figure.
Post 808537 by Doingitsideways on 2017-01-06 19:00:43
M59s have LSDs, not too many knocking about though.
Another suggestion is of course putting the fat pigs on a diet.
Rusty wings could therefore be classed as a performance mod

M59's have a viscous coupling. Not even in the same ballpark even as a Quaife, let alone a Gripper. I've had all 3. Personally, IMO an M59 with a viscous coupling is barely even noticeable. I fitted a Quaife to my old S70, probably 10 years ago, it was beyond words how amazing it was. Now on a Gripper in the 850, and it's another league compared to the Quaife, quite unbelievable how much difference it makes. 350hp fwd, plant it in a bend and the car just pulls round the bend, you have to experience it to appreciate how necessary a proper LSD is!
I wouldn't waste my money on an M59, especially these days, IF you can even find one, they are all mega miles, well past their best, and nowhere near as robust as an M56. Keep saving and buy a proper diff!!

Definitely 100% a Gripper best mod u will ever do m8

Completely agree, Chris.
No substitute for a proper diff.
Was more meaning that there is a diff option to be had for relative peanuts if you can find one, and this seems to be a "Bang for buck" kind of thread.
Suppose by the time you've paid someone to fit a possibly unknown gearbox though...

V70 washer jets? From a p1 of p2? Are they are straight fit?
Post 808577 by Blackdog on 2017-01-08 09:20:25
P1 and yes a straight fit. Other models may fit as well as I got mine from a late model old shape V40.

Something for me to look out for, the 850 ones are pants.
