In sept this year I'm due to move. The move will take me around 30 miles from work (each way) and a travel time or around 45min M4 M5. I was wondering what sort of daily commute others have and how do you find it especially if it's similar to mine?
My other reason for asking is I've got P3 V70 D5 215bhp, I normally get 40mpg that's a mixture of roads distances and speeds. I really love it, and don't want to have to use my partners 1.4DCI :nono: Megan to commute. The V70 is much more pleasant to drive.
However the Megan does 60+ mpg so makes sense to use it.
What is the 1.6 V70 like or I could change to a V60 V50?? what would folks recommend for economy. I need the space for a dog too.
Cheers

Depreciation etc on a car change is usually a far bigger cost than the difference in fuel saving you mention... I'd just keep the car you like and already have, unless this is a very long term decision and no further car or location changes are on the horizon.
Worth crunching the numbers on mileage and fuel costs versus all the other potential costs on a change.

Obviously it depends on your wallet size ;)
My commute is nearly the same as yours ~30 miles each direction = 60 miles total. Combination of 5 miles back-roads,10 miles standard road and 15 miles dual carriage road.
Used my old S60 (2.0T) for 4 years and the R for nearly a year as daily driver. Consumption was ~ 25-27 (S60) and ~20-22 MPG (depends on the traffic) + maintenance, so the family budget got 'lighter' for sure.
Positive: driving my Volvo(s) its a joy, spending 90 mins driving in a nice, comfortable (and fast) car on daily basis its a plus too.
Negative: miles goes up quickly, maintenance costs are increasing rapidly.
Feb'16 we purchased a new Mazda CX-3 1.5 D for my better-half and nominated it for a daily driver.
Positive: cheap to run vs the Volvo(s) ~60 MPG + the diesel is cheaper than the petrol (Ireland), new car = minimum maintenance, cheaper road tax.
Negative: miles goes up quickly, cost of purchasing a new car, not as comfortable as the Volvo(s), not as powerful as the Volvo(s) - comes as a disadvantage when trying to overtake someone on standard road.
In your case, I would either keep the V70, use as DD and enjoy every moment while having such a nice car or perhaps think about to buy a second 'scrapyard fugitive' for coins, then trow it away once it gets beyond reasonable repair costs.
Obviously don't expect anything fancy from a cheap car + you should be able (and willing) to carry out most of the necessary services yourself.

Personally, i'd rather drive something comfy and refined and get 40mpg, then drive a euro box and get 60mpg.
I do about 40 miles a day and i'm currently averaging about 27mpg from my BMW 535d.

I currently travel 84 miles(round trip) a day, and using the RX8 I'm getting 18mpg, so spending about £130 a week on fuel, but boy is it fun. :)

I still remember the day when my rx-7 managed 22 mpg, on a long run. Ashamed to say it hasn't been out of storage since the weather went crap - my poor excuse for this is that it's missing a wheel arch liner so don't want to mess it up...
My daily is a eBay-purchased Subaru Legacy @25 mpg. Cheap to buy (if not run), quick/stable at speed, safe enough went the criteria

I'm all over the place each day, but it always seems to average out to £60 a week in petrol.

Knowing where you work, I bet it doesn't look that white at the moment.

I have increased my commute in the last 2 years from 6 yards to more than 30. I had to build an entire new office in my back garden.

I'm thinking a bike might be the solution !! keep the V70 and use a bike I can also filter through traffic then

I dunno.
Have you seen the prices of some bikes these days?!
Used to be a standing joke at my old place...
I had several cars, one of which was the Capri, another even had a TV.
Combined, they all cost less than the gaffer's bike FRAME!!

S2000 and approx 20mpg , who cares about MPG approx 600 miles per week. Or anything in the car park that needs test miles putting on :)
