Rattlecan refurb on some nebs (good idea? - who cares!)

A little project now the sun is out... I picked up some nebs a couple of weeks ago, not a bad price considering they had nearly-new tyres on them but they were rough. Major kerbing damage to the rim, dings and scratches to the rest. One even had a few deep gouges across the face. Heavily damaged one far right... Image So I got busy with the dremel, small orbital sander, chisel (yes, you can chisel aluminium believe it or not), tin of filler etc etc. The worst one being filled.. Image Image Image All the wheels had various amounts of corrosion inside... Again, grinder, filler etc. Image Image Fortunately, this is only on one wheel but every bolt hole has corroded and needed digging - out (there's no way I'm splitting them so don't ask lol) Image Image Some filling... Image Bit of primer to protect the exposed surfaces... Image Slow progress grinding the rim flat but getting there... Image Filler primer and some sanding to complete the surface... (the bolts have plastic caps on them to keep them clean) Image Full primer coat... Image From this... Image To this... Image I'm not posting any more pics for now as I don't wanna give anything away until Swedish day or maybe the southern meet on the 22nd if I get them finished and balanced. Stay tuned!

Bloody hell! What did you hit? Dover?

Post 811035 by Harvey on 2017-04-11 22:07:06

Thats not what anyone needs , went flat or bad vibration :(

Post 811038 by Doingitsideways on 2017-04-11 23:00:57

Maybe me viewing the pic on the phone, but that doesn't look too bad. If it holds pressure and balances up, I'd run on it :)

Well that's just bloody marvellous... Took the nebs to be spun to see how straight they are and one is so badly buckled it's scrap! :( Anybody got a spare kicking about? I'm not bothered about condition as long as it's round and not shaped like Richard O'Brian's head.

i had pegs once ..its was super buckled and a flat spot .. a local wheel specialist true'd it easily and took out flat spot ..you must have a place near you that can do it

Roughly how much did the repair cost?

Post 811174 by The Flying Banana on 2017-04-15 14:22:55

£50 straightened it and it was straight as a Roman road

Post 811333 by M-R-P on 2017-04-21 14:27:34

Just had a voicemail from my local wheel specialist... My repaired neb is ready for collection :) Will update later. Cost: 72 quid.

do you reckon they'll do this for the same price....Image

Post 811335 by MoleT-5R on 2017-04-21 15:33:17

not noticed I've popped this pic up already on your thread Martin and not replied to your comment.....no it wasn't dover but a pothole that was almost as big.....no potholers were injured during the destruction of this wheel, whilst I was being a nice Volvo driver and giving way to oncoming traffic. Doh!!

Post 811336 by M-R-P on 2017-04-21 17:53:29

Just picked the wheel up and the guy said it took some work. "it was like a 50p" were his exact words lol. Any way, I can get on with finishing the wheels now, sadly, they won't be ready for incarnation tomorrow but Swedish day is looking good :)

Post 811427 by M-R-P on 2017-04-27 10:35:12

Wheels now finished and look pretty good. Pics will follow later when I get them on the car.

Post 811436 by M-R-P on 2017-04-27 18:42:01

They're on! Image Image The car just came off the jack in these pics so it's not sitting right but they look pretty bloody good I think.

Looking forward to next weekend at the Swedish day meet to see them. :)
