Hi everybody. Hope you can all bear with me and maybe give me some good advice. I have a D5 v70 which I bought about 3 years ago, in really nice condition and only done 120k. The gearbox has been ok mostly all the time Ive had it but late summer it sort of started to play up a bit, clunking into 3rd on the way up but ok when coming down, but recently its started flaring and on a few occasions has missed a gear completely hitting the red line before engaging with a mighty clunk, I suspect valve block but not sure. So I would like to keep it because its a lovely car and beautifully made, so how much would it cost to have it stripped and repaired, who would you recommend or do I get rid as its uneconomical to repair. Sorry this is a long winded ramble but really nneed some good advice. Many thanks Alan

You’re looking at around £2500 for a strip and repair I reckon.

Hi Thanks for that, to be honest I thought it would be around that sort of figure. I donnt really know what to do, I can get it fixed or p/x it before it fails completely.

First thing first, what gearbox is that? 5 spd or 6spd? Second, I assume the gearbox fluid hasn't been replaced - as Volvo says LifeTime fluid, which is rubbish btw... Third - does the car have the latest TCM update? Before you start spedning a crazy amount of money for a new gearbox, there are few things to do. I would do 3 times drain and fill immediately. Few hundred miles between each drain and fill. Use the link to check the Valvoline ATF compatibility of your car. http://www.valvolineeurope.com/manager/modules/parts/english/lubricant_advisor Alternatively you can use the Mobil ATF or the Toyota ATF. Flush might sound a good idea, however at 120k with no fluid replacement can do more harm than good.... Alternatively if someone does the same in the UK like on the video below, then it would be the best. Meantime get the latest TCM software loaded by Volvo.

Looking at the other topic you opened recently. You have the fluid.... http://www.vpcuk.org/forums/showthread.php?63876-Jws-3309 So does this mean you've already replaced the fluid?

Hi Thanks for your input, sorry I should have put more details. Its a 2006 model with the six speed box. I have flushed the oil 3 times last summer, final change the oil ran clear red. I have been getting it serviced at the local dealer ( Chapmans), I also made sure that they updated any software and checked the fluid level in the gearbox just in case I had not filled it's enough, interestingly they did not any transmission problems on the helthcheck,so I think now it may be going down. Cheers Alan

Sounds like valve body issues. Early 6 speed autos suffer with this. Worth repairing though.

Thanks Antony I thought it was sticking valves too, happens almost everytime I accelerate hard, but scary on joining motorways. Have you any idea of cost to replace / repair valve block? Cheers Alan

A new valve body is about £460 plus labour to fit unless you can fit it yourself .

He's going to call me back tomorrow with a price to strip and rebuild your gearbox. This guy knows his stuff and has worked on Autos for over 40 years! Now I have the info required, 2006 V70 with 6 speed. will get back to you tomorrow.

Hi Lee Thank you so much for doing that, it really is very kind of you. When I get a quote I will have to sit down and work out the economics of its to see if its worth the investment. At the end of the day, its not worth a lot even include good working order, but we'll see Many thanks Alan
Sounds like valve body issues. Early 6 speed autos suffer with this. Worth repairing though.
Yup, based on the description and the year it is most likely the well known valve body issue.

Obviously it depends on the price of the repair.

Here’s a quote I found on a 2005 6sp auto gearbox. Had the valve body replaced, TCM updated, but still never fixed the shift flare.

Nice find Bill  If an auto gearbox starts to do anything that is not considered 'normal', the vehicle should not be driven at all. Most end up with full gearbox rebuilds because owners carry on driving the car.
Ov56uef
I've text the garage the VRN Thursday afternoon. I'll give him a tinkle this morning and see what he says. :saint:

Thats great thanks Lee. Its been like this for three years and probably for some time before I bought it, its only recently got worse, but I went on a journey last week of around 100 miles and it was as good as gold.
