Hi there I get a taping sound underload from the gear box so took it to Volvo dealer the man took it for a drive came back and said the differential is on its way out he gave me a number of gear box repair centre and they say it can’t be fixed as they can’t get the bearings for it so can I get a recon gear box for my car if so were can I get it from thanks
If the diff is on its way out it may be possible to swap the diff and what a great excuse to fit a Gripper or a Quaife ATB, or you could just fit another manual box...plenty of them out there, you could even upgrade to a six speeder......
Bit of issue with it being the R as it will have (or should have)the M59 gearbox and the Visco clutch lsd on the O/S driveshaft. This means the diff is different to the normal FWD gearboxes due to the fact it has an extra splined output shaft. Problem is finding a M59 gearbox is pretty rare unless you want to pay through the nose for it. Another way around it is to fit a normal FWD gearbox and O/S driveshaft. But even those are getting hard to find.

I would! Have you tried draining the oil and using a better quality, thicker gear oil...like Redline? Differential oil, as far as Volvo are concerned, is not part of any service schedule, so likely the oil is rank and heavily contaminated. Surely it's worth a punt before you shell out on expensive Gearbox/Diff repairs?
