Good evening,
Advice please. I have recently bought an S40 T5 and I love the performance, particularly the throttle response and lack of turbo lag which was a pleasant surprise.
My son and I have a project car and we want to put a Volvo engine in it. Ideally this would be from a similar vehicle but it would be sacrilege to cannibalise an S40 T5 not to mention far too expensive.
So option 2 is an older, rougher, 2.3 or 2.4 T5 (or possibly a 2.5T) that is past it's sell by date. My simple question is which of these or any other model has the least lag. Absolute power is not the biggest factor, target is 200-220 BHP, but it is more the driveability. I'm looking for "point and squirt" rather than "wait and whoosh" if you know what I mean.
I think only the s40 T5 has the LPT which is integral to the exhaust manifold which I presume is part of the reason it's so responsive? Which other cylinder heads would that manifold fit as my local scrappy has a bent S40 T5 which still has the turbo on it. Or which other models have LPT?
Any advice would be appreciated.

F or point and squirt, I'd say any old 850 t5 with a 15g will give you 225hp straight out of the box with none or very little lag, mine runs 301bhp at present and is very snappy on the boost

The 2.5T engines are 200bhp with the LPT which has a quick spool up due to it being small. Problem is the ecu, later cars have the ecu coded, etc. So best thing to get is a pre 1999 turbo engine which comes with the wiring loom and ecu (or find a breaker). The ecu software can easily be flashed to an non immobiliser version (with some tweaks for more power) and you're away.
Unless you have got your own ecu solution, then any 2.3 or 2.5 turbo engine will do.

Thanks for the advice, especially about the ECUs being "locked" on the later models. This rings a bell with me from another thread I was reading. Other than it just being pre-1999 is there any way I can confirm it is a LPT and which ECU is fitted? Is the T number on the engine code significant? In the 2.3 range it goes up to T9, the 2.4s and the 2.5s up to T7.
Some are obviously too new but it is a bit of a minefield for the inexperienced (me!)

The 2.5 engines have the engine code B5254T (B for petrol, 5 for number of cylinders, 25 for engine capacity, 4 for number of valves per cylinder and T for turbo). The 2.3 engines will be code B5234Tx (x for whatever number engine revision).
The first revision of the 2.5 LPT was the B5254T (no numbers after it) and was used in the 850 AWD and the V70, S70 and early C70 range, until the ecu changed (which is maybe when they started adding numbers to the end of the 2.5 engine code).
