Hi all,
I had a 2.3t 940 GLE way back (loved it) when and I have a hankering to get a V70r having seen a '99 AWD manual model with 170k ok the clock for what seems like a fair price. Viewing tomorrow and hopefully looking forward to being the next owner but the sensible part of my brain is screaming at me just how many holidays and motorbikes I could buy with what it could potentially cost me over the coming years!

Very true......but to be honest the awd system will probably need some love buy now at that mileage, but you may get lucky and find this one has been pampered and had previously had, no expense spared owners who have a full volvo service history etc, good luck and get some pictures up if you get it.

Welcome to the forum!
You'll love the power that the engine produces (depending on what you are used to in daily life) and probably soon get the urge for more power!
Problem with the AWD cars is that parts are becoming scarce (some rear suspension bushes, angle gear, rear diff). If you are mechanically minded and don't mind getting stuck in then that's a start.
Take the car for a drive and listen for noises/clunks from the propshaft, rear diff and angle gear (attached to the gearbox) especially when turning in a tight circle. Look for rust on the front of the rear arches as they stick out a bit and catch all the grime. Check the tire tread depths are even around the car as uneven tread wear can put strain on the AWD system and cause issues (though I've never had a problem that hasn't been of my own doing).
Other than that the AWD is the same as the FWD cars.
I have two 850 AWDs and only had one issue with one awd system which was the connecting sleeve between the gearbox and angle gear stripped which meant changing it and the gearbox. The issue I have now is renovating the rear suspension as it's on its original bushes (160k).
One thing is the fuel consumption is terrible. Around town you may get around 22mpg and on a run 26-28mpg if you're lucky.
Until recently I was dailying my 850 AWD 65 miles a day to work and back and really it's too old to be doing that sort of mileage, it needs some love on the suspension and running gear.
