Not the usual auto gearbox issues??

Hi all, new to the site and new to Volvos and already looking for advice unfortunately. [emoji3525]
I have a 2004 S80 D5 Auto with 200k miles.
The issue I have is the gearbox is showing signs of ‘flaring’ I believe from what I have been reading online at least.
1st-2nd seems not bad but every other gear after that gives the sort of false neutral feeling and the revs rise but feels like it is not in a gear. (Very similar to a slipping clutch on a manual gearbox)
If I ease off the throttle it will change up a gear and it does so smoothly with no nasty bangs etc. But it does this constantly from a cold or warm engine.
If I hold the throttle to the floor the car changes gear as normal through the gears however.
I have bought a b4 servo kit as a hope it may solve this issue but has anyone got any advise or experience with this happening as it’s not the typical b4 servo problem I read about I think.
I also intend on doing a sump dump and replacing some of the fluid as I am going to be under the car anyway.
Thank you all in advance for any help/assistance.
George.

Hi George I’ve just bought a 2004 s80 d5 with only 86 k and a one owner and I’m experiencing the same thing as you are, what is the cure?

Hi Kowalski,
Still haven’t got to the bottom of it.
Have been working a lot so plan to do the b4 servo cover in the next fortnight some time and a sump dump to see if it helps.

After 200k miles, the ATF will be dead.
Your best chance would be a full flush and I would add a bottle of Lucas SS premixed with the new fluid.

Thanks for the advice, I agree the atf doesn’t look the freshest I’ve ever seen and I don’t know it’s history either.
But forgive my ignorance.....
What is SS I presume the Lucas sure shift atf fluid?

Lucas Stop Slip, I find this to be beneficial for high mileage auto boxes.

Thanks mate I’ll have a look into this and consider putting some in when I drain the sump in the next week or 2 [emoji1303][emoji1303]

Draining the sump will only remove around a quarter of the ATF from your transmission.
Yours is in need of a full flush, do a search for full flush...

Please read my transmission adventure from another forum below, if you have questions I will be happy to answer them :)
I bought my Volvo V70 2004 3 years ago with transmission problems already started at 144.000km and the owner can not use the car because of these issues.I had no idea with the troubles of P2 transmissions but I got into tech docs in Vida and forums , slowly gaining info about the situation. The previous owner told me that he had changed the trans fluid couple of times and it didn't work. When I got home I immediately sourced for correct fluid , Mobil 3309.I replaced the fluid and made the arrangements in Vida (resetting the fluid counter and making an adaptation). It was getting better but the rpm flares begin to happen.I made the B4 cover update and it was done too.I am living in an area where there is less traffic so the trans are not making problems, but when I go to the city it begins harsh engagements when it is hot.So I bought the Hayden transsaver cooler with a oil filter and installed on the car.Now I can see the difference like day and night. It was trying to make some problems in the city traffic but well in the limits. If I open the air condition then it never does anything.Lastly this year I updated the cooler to Derale stacked plate cooler. It was even better cooling if I watch the trans oil numbers in Vida.So I am at 246.000km and the trans still runs without major problems.I changed the trans oil every 50.000km, I am trying yo keep it fresh.I know that someday this trans will be done but hey who knows :)

Hi all just an update......
So I have done the b4 servo upgrade however the old cover and seals etc all looked ok but at least it’s ruled this out.
I have dropped the sump and got 2.8 litres out, drove 500 miles and dropped the sump contents again.
So it’s not all new oil but it’s getting there.
The old oil was very brown and not in a great shape.
Driving wise the cars gear changes have improved by at least 50-60%.
The flaring is still there between all gears however not as bad as it was. Definitely still getting the slipping/delayed changing feeling all the time. Eg driving at half throttle will flare to around 3,000rpm for 3-5 secs before engaging the next gear.
Anyone got any ideas what to try next?
I plan on changing the sump contents again in another few hundred miles also just to keep diluting the old oil and replenish.
Definitely colour changing to more red ish though.
Here’s a pic of the old stuff that came out.

Running it for another "few hundred" slipperdoodah miles; won't do the old clutches or the ATF temperature any favours at all.
Drop the sump pan and replace the ATF strainer for a new one.
Using ATF Mobil 3309, give the transmission another partial flush, or even two; to get the fluid back to looking healthy and then dilute a bottle of Lucas SS into the final fill.
Timely completing these simple rituals, could resurrect this transmission a ninth-life at the eleventh-hour, if they don't, you could be left praying for a miracle.
tick tock.

A guide how-to fit a new strainer.
Note: Even this is not all of the ATF, there is another 3 or 4 litres trapped inside the torque converter.

Is this an AW55/51 gearbox though as I have in my S80?

If it wasn't, you couldn't have uprated the B4 servo!

David P…..
I mean the link you posted previously, I don’t think that is the same gearbox as I have.
As far as I am led to believe the gearbox I have only had a filter which is internal in the gearbox and not the easiest to get to….
Happy to be proven wrong though.
I have the AW55/51 gearbox.
B4 servo cover was changed about 2 weeks ago along with draining the sump.
Cheers

You couldn’t grace me with any part numbers for the filter etc then could you?
Struggling to find any online whilst I’m out here at work?
TIA

Hi David P,
I have to agree with Dode4444 that my car too doesn't have the oil sump for the trans. The car in the video is a T6 and it has a totally different gearbox then the 2004 V70 2.0T I have.
Post 821414 by David P on 2021-05-30 20:05:19
The purpose of the video was to show how to change the strainer.
Removing the sump pan for access is essentially the same job.
It's not my fault that You Tube does not yet have a D5 variant.
Maybe dode4444 can upload one, then D5 & T5 owners might then service their automatic transmissions properly?

David P,
I appreciate that you say there’s a strainer in this sump pan but I have read so many other sites and forums and not once have I ever heard anything other than on the Volvo D5 autos with an AW55-51SN gearbox only have an internal filter and it is not readily accessible to get to for changing.
So to confirm what you are saying is….
that if I removed the sump pan this is easily access and changed from under the car?
Thanks.

Hmmm, excuse me, it is more involved than anticipated.
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=82841&start=10
It looks like you are stuck with either a bigger job, or an ATF change and crossed fingers.
Post 821417 by dode4444 on 2021-05-30 22:14:44
Just as I thought haha.
Couple of oil changes by draining the sump for me and with a week or so in between and if it doesn’t improve I’ll drive it till it dies.
Didn’t pay mega bucks for the car so wouldn’t be worth investing hundreds into the problem.
Cheers.
