Hey.
Been thinking about a 1995 850R for a couple of weeks and digesting advice from the threads. Had a quick run out the other day and it purrrred.
Seems pricey though. 88k on the clock, fvsh, very good condition, new cambelt at 78k, no rattles, no knocks, no whistles, no leaks, good consistent bright red with 'beige' interior. The very nice man wants £6,800.
I'm thinking this is high but will take advice to the contrary.
Moving from my compnay car plod-van (VW Tdi Passat) to hopefully bag a family vehicle that gies me a smile when I escape on my own.
Wad'ya think? :shifty:

Welcome to the forum!! I'd say 5.5 - 6k would be a tad more realistic but if an enthusiast wants it bad enough they will pay the money! When you say no whistles does that mean your not getting any turbo whistle from her?

First, asking this type of question in a Volvo forum full of T5/T5R/R owners, is bound to receive biased answers. Personally I'm not too sure of the pricing of the cars in UK but I'm would be paying 6 times more than you for the R you mentioned and I would not bat an eye in doing that.
So, go for it if the price suits you and if the car really purrs (or growl) to your liking :D
However, it doesn't harm to bring along a regular owner who DIY on his car to give you some opinion. A word of advise, don't look so keen and drool over the car when you want a further discount.

>don't look so keen and drool over the car when you want a further discount
So me sprawling over the bonnet licking the windscreen was a bad move? I kept my clothes on so I didn't look too desperate.
I think I'll make an offer in the region of 6k as it needs four tyres in the next few k and a service. It does have the extra rear-facing seats in the boots for the kids, "which is nice."
Re: whistles, there's the normal turbo whistle when it gets active but nothing out of place - all seems to be in the right order is what I'm trying to say.

T5s under 100k are quite rare, give us a shout if its nearby and I will have a look at it for you!
Im no expert but i reckon I could spot a badun and I know a great Volvo Independent in Notts!
Post 6856 by HuskMan on 2005-02-23 21:28:26
I'm about certain that it isn't a badun (but you never know with any mechanical thing do you?) I just don't want to be paying over the odds for it.
Although, to be honest I so enjoyed my 8 mile test that I can't see me wanting to give the great big brick back. How did it go round the traffic island like that?
I'll accept all the pointers to Notts based dealers. I know about the breaker guys over in Ilkeston who I may visit early as the alloys need some attention.

Great, there are one or two things I'd like to 'update'.
What's best for the red livery on the 850R? It is a bit dull at the moment - any product recommendations?
Also, has anyone modfied their dash? If so, where did you get the part and where from?

Dave is your man when it comes to car cleanliness and bringing your paintwork back (he'll be on in a bit)
When you say you have a few things you want to update are we talking performance mods???

See pics link below. When I got her - she was very dull and had patches of white haze - so familiar with red cars. Had mine professionally mopped ~£25. Better than T-cut it reveals the paint work very well. I also have my own supply of G3 cutting compound (use sparingly and ensure it is properly washed off). Any professional valeter should be able to mop your motor.
Use non-chalk based polishes. I have a supply of "Presta fast wax" from Waxworks (Steve - Mrsmopp's fella).
Never use an automated car wash.
Using a wax that builds on itself. Hand wash with a good quality shampoo.
There sadly is no subtitute for elbow grease/TLC. Results speak for themselves... www.bigredvolvos.co.uk
My last question is concerning the car - 1995 850R - are you sure. They didn't make them till 1996?

Just taken a few minutes to look at your car Dave at BRV.co, nice :)
Well, it is an N reg and my old N reg Volvo was 95 so that was my assumption. I'll accept anyone's opinion on this as I am truly green in regards to red volvos. It is on a personalised plate (see other thread) of K 8SO R so that hides its age from me.
So it is a '96 then and in need of a good polish.
Early mods will be very mild cosmetic upgrades internally and gettig it clean. Then I'll move on to possible performance enhancements. We'll see how the relationship blossoms...

When u say this what do u have in mind?

Re: upgrading the dash
Just cosmetic nonsense to make it look a little more 'up to date.' It is looking a bit tired and I wondered if anyone knew of a way to replace the dash or a newer replacement alternative.
Long shot I know, but I thought that I'd ask. I bit of TLC may be my only option.

Not sure about replacements, but a retrim might be a good idea... looks like they're a fairly easy shape to trim - possibly doable oneself, but if not, sure you could find a local trimmer who'd be happy to take your cash

If you do get her and you need a hand - just bob over and I will see if I can't sprinkle some magic over her and get her looking good (or at least give you some pointers)

Almost a done deal. Just the last few things to sort out - including finding a kind insurance company willing to give me a break with no NCB. Then of course I got to raise the cash which will take a day or two. So, I should have the wee man by next weekend I think.
Dreamt about it last night. Must be getting some obsession complex...

What's you're age and have you a price in mind for the insurance? :shockedbi

I know what you're saying SiamB. But it all turned out beutifully in the end... From the last time I added to this thread to the point of buying insurance I cut the quote in half.
Just loving the car. That smooth ride, that awesome power at revs, and the screaming kids... well two out of three ain't bad
