Hi all, The Check Strap on my Drivers door was making a really loud Clunking noise when i opened or closed the door. Its a common problem on 850's & early V70's, the 2 spot welds Break apart on the pillar so it does'nt work properly.....So instead of getting it Welded up i found this on the VOC forum and gave it a go this morning. It took me about an hour from start to finish, really easy to do and it Work's. http://au.geocities.com/ozbrick850/door-stay_fix.html Hope this works for you. :)
Good find, bet it took longer to find the thread than do the fix.
It did Stu, took ages to find the Thread... found it on page 26 of the 850/v70 link... :slap: Only took about 50mins to do the fix....Never mind well worth it in the end.

Hi, when this happened to my first 850 I just removed the thing. The door was fine and did not give me any grief whatsoever. I would remove the tie and store it incase you decide to fix at a later date. I kept mine for a while then chucked it. cheers,Mike

woot! nice one, I was looking for this link as a mate of mine has the same problem. I had this problem when I first bought my 850 and this guide was spot on - the fix is still solid after nearly 3 years of use! Throughly recommended... Thanks for putting this up :)

Gotta get this done on mine, I disconnected the check strap after getting quoted £200 to fix but scared that one day its gonna come back from service with the door bent back against the wing cos they dont notice until the wind catches it...:scared:

Nice little set of instructions.

This ancient thread is the only one I can find that hints at the fix!!! I have my new strap, but want to find out as much as I can before starting so I don't make any time wasting mistakes. If anyone knows of a thread with photos please let me know. The nearest I have found was on Matthews Volvo Site but that was instructions on removing trim panels. Looks like I might be photographing my efforts when I get round to it! But if you do know how, PLEASE let me know!!! :) :) :)

I fitted a new strap to my dads 850, was a bit fiddly, but quite simple. From what I can remember (its been some time) just remove the door trim, remove the pin from the car body end, undo the bolts (on the end of the door) to the check strap and remove. HTH

Made a start on the job...only to discover the splined bolt holding the strap to the pillar has been stripped!!!! So will be ordering one of those in a moment and taking a look for a hefty HSS drill :(
